If the people they are protecting and serving are vaccinated they are at least protected from the virus, or so they say.

Beyond protecting the stupid civilians that refuse vaccination, or the immunocompromised for whom vaccines are less effective, cops also need to protect themselves. Cops are dying from covid 5x as often as they are dying from gunfire. It's literally the leading cause of death among all cops right now, and about 5% that don't die from it are dealing with long covid. This is a workplace health issue as much as it is a public health issue.
