Every vaccine has a known failure rate among the general population.

Fortunately those diseases - like smallpox and polio for example - have been beaten back by decades of vaccine use and despite vaccines for those not being 100% we have achieved herd immunity and/or marginalized them enough that they're not a measurable threat to the population.

Two very good threads, anyone that's interested should read through both. I highlighted the most concerning tweets from them to reiterate that this new variant should not be written off as media fear porn, but both virologists also caution not to jump to conclusions for what this might ultimately mean for us. Might be all the more reason to get that booster sooner rather than later.

Thanks.  The little I have learned so far indicate Omicron has likely circulated undetected for a while. It seems we should find out soon how far it is spread already. Certainly a variant to watch, and one science should take seriously.

Maybe we should close the border too.

Travel bans are kinda pointless at this point. Much better off with just well enforced restrictions on vaccine mandates and negative testing for flights. Maybe at worst, you go with 48 hour quarantines and retesting, but outright bans don't buy you much in our current situation.

Looks like the new kung flu variant mutated itself into a cold.

I just had a week in England.  I had to show proof of vaccine to enter and then had to take a test after two days (negative).  Looks like Boris has just upped this to require an immediate PCR test upon entering with full quarantine until the results are in.

Over here in Sweden, we are not experiencing any wave yet this fall.  Despite that, there are some precautions about to be put into place.  The main one is that an establishment must screen for vaccinated people in order to have indoor gatherings of over 100.  It will be interesting to review why Sweden isn't being hit this fall when everyone around us is including the Nordic neighbors.  Still early but we've had schools in full session now with no masking for over three months and also zero measures in place in general.  Vaccination rates are even slightly lower than the other Nordic countries.  The only obvious answer is that we have more people with immunity from actually having had the virus.  Maybe there is some other explanation.
