December 11, 20214 yr It has been an interesting autumn here in Sweden with regard to COVID. We went four months with no restrictions, all kids in school without masks, etc. and had almost no rise in COVID spread, no rise in ICU patients, and super low COVID deaths. At the very same time, the virus went into a new wave across most of Europe and to an extent in the US. Looking at vaccination rates doesn't provide an answer as to why this has happened as Sweden is pretty much on a par as far as that goes with many of the western European states with the US a bit behind. Still feels a bit early but the one likely factor that seems to stick out is the idea that COVID very likely spread much wider and further in Sweden as compared to most of those other countries and thus there is a bit of widespread natural immunity out there in Sweden that is slowing the spread. There is a bit of a general uptake over the last week but then we've seen slight uptakes in a couple weeks since the kid's sports break late October only to have those fall again. Tests of the amount of virus found in samples of the big cities waste (sewage) shows no significant uptake on the way. On the other hand there has been a recent jump (relative jump) in ICU patients. Deaths on the other hand are still very low and Sweden continues to drop in the deaths per capita rankings now down to #56. In any case, some light restrictions and recommendations have just been enacted about a week ago. Proof of two jabs is required to enter an indoor gathering of more than 100 people (movie, theater, sports, club, etc.). Note: Don't bother looking at the confirmed cases stats comparisons in Sweden over the last 4-6 weeks. The testing guidelines did a 180 in the 2nd week of November and we also are experiencing a very robust cold/flu season and people are testing due to that. In fact, there is a shortage of home tests right now.
