The hot topic (BTW, I  sent the governor two emails today and might even send him a third) is returning people to work and reopening the economy, which I believe is absolutely the right step at this time.  How to do this safely is on the minds of leadership.  I wanted to offer up some facts in tonight's email, in case any of you might entertain the idea of writing your governors.

The State of Pennsylvania has a population of about 12,800,000.  There are about 812,000 healthcare workers in the state.

1.  Healthcare workers represent 6.35% of the population of Pennsylvania

2.  As of 4/7/20, healthcare workers represented less than 5% of the infected individuals in the state.  Despite the fact they have continued to work through the pandemic, taking care of many covid+ patients.

3.  In the beginning of the pandemic, they were working in close proximity to covid patients without any protection.  Physical distancing has never been an option for us.

4.  In the beginning, some Hospitals forbid their staff from wearing masks because they did not want to scare the patients.

5.  Factor in that a disproportionate number of healthcare workers in Nursing Homes were infected.

6.  You can't assume that every healthcare worker contracted the virus at work.  An investigation at Albany Medical Center demonstrated that some of their workforce were infected by community spread.

7.  I know of no healthcare worker who has contracted the disease since the end of March when masks for all was firmly in place and had become the usual standard practice in Hospitals.

I have a great idea, send everybody back to work in hospitals, it appears to be safer to be in a hospital than in the public domain.

From Italy; more on antibodies.

Not so long ago, some of the press and politicians in Italy were trumpeting the value of antibody testing and were anticipating issuing "Immunity Licenses"  to those individuals who tested positive as a license to return to work.  Apparently facts did not dissuade these individuals, who may have obtained their medical licensure through alternative pathways, from broadcasting their thoughts.  Not so much now though.  It seems that facts have now caught up to fiction.

We don't know  if the antibodies are protective.  We don't know how long the protection may last if they are protective.  We don't know what level of antibody will be needed if the antibodies are indeed protective.  Precious healthcare dollars were wasted on tests that did not provide a quantitative value.  Dr. Alberto stated, "I am worried about the irresponsible use of antibody tests which may jeopardize phase two."  Some are also worried about the behavior of those who test positive, and the feeling of invincibility that may develop.

Numbers

I wanted to drill down on the numbers with this presentation.

I looked at the last 15 days, in five day increments, to determine what was happening with infection rates.

4/18 - 4/23 first interval
4/23 - 4/28 second interval
4/28 - 5/3 third interval

California - first interval new cases increased by 29%, second interval by 20.5% and third interval by 19%.
The absolute increase in the number of new cases over the intervals stayed about the same.

Florida - the first interval new cases increased by 14.1%, second interval by 14%, third interval by 9.8%
The absolute increase in the number of new cases over the intervals stayed about the same.

Maryland - the first interval new cases increased by 27.8%, the second interval by 27.8% , the third interval 25.1%
The absolute increase in the number of new cases has increased in Maryland.

New Jersey - the first interval new cases increased by 27.8%, the second interval by 13.8%, the third interval by 11.3%
The absolute increase in the number of new cases has decreased significantly in New Jersey.

New York - the first interval new cases increased by 11.2%, the second interval by 12.0%, the third interval by 7.2%
The absolute increase in the number of new cases  has decreased in New York.

Pennsylvania - the first interval new cases increased by 19.2%, the second interval by 16.7%, the third interval by 13.8%
The absolute number of new cases in the intervals stayed about the same.

South Carolina - the first interval  new cases increased by 15.8%, the second interval 14.1%, the third interval 18%
The absolute number of new cases has increased in South Carolina.

Texas - the first interval new cases increased by 20.1%, the second interval by 19.2%, the third interval by 20.5%
The absolute number on new cases has increased in Texas.

Maryland, South Carolina and Texas seem to be struggling.  New Jersey and New York have seen decrease in the absolute number of new cases the other states are staying about the same.

Numbers:  1800 from the Hopkins website

Testing - 7,285,178 (231,812 tests performed in the last 24 hours)

USA - 1,176,905 (up 1.95%, down from 2.56%,, 5754 fewer new cases than the day before)EmojiEmoji

New York - 318,953 (up 0.80%, down from 1.09%, 900 fewer new cases than the day before)EmojiEmoji first state to break below 1%

New Jersey - 128,269 (up 1.28%, down from 2.44%, 1502 fewer new cases than the day before)EmojiEmoji

Pennsylvania - 52,816 (up 3.10%, up from 1.44% the day before)EmojiEmoji

Maryland - 26,408 (up 2.98%, down from 4.77% the day before,403 fewer new cases than the day before)

California - 55,070 (up2.28%, down from 2.75%, 215 fewer new cases than the day before)EmojiEmoji

South Carolina Emoji

Texas - 32,582 ( up 3.14%, down from 3.44% the day before, 59 fewer new cases than the day before)EmojiEmoji

World - 3,571,615 (up 2.20%, down from 2.54% the day before, 9694 fewer cases than the day before)EmojiEmoji

Projections - IHME has reconfigured the curves so there is no sense in looking at this right now, the tails go out much further on the reconfigured curves.

Thank you for sending this message out to others, as restrictions are relaxed, it is vital that people continue to be very compliant with masks even if political leadership is not advocating the practice.

Showed this post to my nurse anesthetist brother who does all covid intubation at his hospital and he laughed at your assumptions. You do have some valid points, but are making some serious logic jumps at beginning of discussion.

I’m pretty sure that this was actually written by his father, who is a doctor at one of the NYC hospitals. Your appeal to authority has been trumped.

What assumptions were laughed at? FYI, the person who writes these is an anesthesiologist with over 30 years of experience.

So over here we are starting to talk about the virus having been here a good bit earlier than we thought.  There is a fully confirmed case in France now of a guy testing 100% positive based on a test of blood taken on Dec 27th.  The test wasn't done until recently.  In Sweden the authorities are starting to speculate that the virus has been here since as far back as November.

Laura Ingraham is actively trying to kill people while still broadcasting from her basement.

She is horrible I can't watch her show.  A journalist trying to speak like she's some sort of scholar?   Please!  I hate how Fox is constantly attacking the other networks as well.  Just awful.

That would make me think I had the virus back in January but no one around me since has been sick

Looks like the mortality rate for COVID is going to be high among the careers of Fox News hosts.

Make sure everyone wears a mask at ALL times.   Don’t touch your face.  Practice sound hand hygiene.   Maintain physical distance where practical.  But most importantly, make sure everyone is wearing a mask at all times.

we have procedures in place...temp taken upon entering the building, social distancing, cleaning procedures, masks are mandatory,...although idk if folks will wear them in their own offices unless someone else is in there.  should be fun.

This is where we have been for awhile though most of our cake eaters are working from home. My work space is big enough and far enough from others that I don’t put my mask in unless I leave my area, or someone else comes into it. It actually has helped me keep engineers and others from borrowing my tools and keep people off the shop floor that shouldn’t be.

I would think most of us don't want to wear a mask.  I wear glasses to see far away and they get fogged up wearing both at the same time.  So I have to sacrifice seeing things to keep the mask on and not touch my face!   It annoys me, this whole thing does.  However, with it being new and a more contagious virus than we've seen in some time, I would rather be annoyed for a few more months to try and keep from getting sick, or getting someone else sick.

It's just a shame that mask wearing was full of misinformation in the beginning and now the politics of your rights are dragged into the discussion.  Right?  Don't see too many claiming the rights to service because they have to wear shoes or a shirt in a store do you?  It's just dumb.  Just do it and let's get through it.

Then there's this: Woman cuts a hole in her facemask so it's "easier to breathe".

Quote

In the video, Joe Samaan, a gas station clerk at S J Food Mart in Lexington, sees a woman entering the shop with a torn mask. "Where did you get that mask from?” he asks the woman when she approaches the counter to pay for gas. "Well, since we have to wear them and it makes it hard to breathe, this makes it a lot easier to breathe,” she replies. "Cutting it?" the clerk replies. "Yeah, I’ll do that too, thanks for the advice.” The woman then leaves the store.

Fold a tissue horizontally and place it at the top of the mask right where it hits the bridge of your nose.  Helps absorb the moisture before it hits your glasses.  Not too thick so the mask is bulging outward though.

Anti-fog wipes work great when you have to mask and wear glasses. A box of a 100 is $12 or so
