I get reluctance to put complete trust in someone who's injecting something into your body (or especially your kids body), but the problem with all of it is that you either trust medical professionals or you trust random internet sources/people on Facebook. Given the two options, I'll trust a doctor.
October 1, 20205 yr Kids and the wife are getting theirs next week. I'm getting mine the week after. Like toast said, if there's one year we shouldn't need it, it's probably this year, but better safe than sorry.

Ftr, my wife was the same way about the HPV vaccine. I took my daughter to a doctor’s appt and my wife flipped out when she found out I let them give our daughter the HPV shot. edit: i thought HPV was just for girls for some reason.

I pay my doctor a lot of money -- why would I do that to just trust Jenny McCarthy over him?

The big push to get it this year is to try to limit quarantines and try to prevent overwhelming the healthcare systems/testing capacities. Hospitals already get busy as hell mid flu season so any little bit helps. Unfortunately last year was really crappy for flu vaccine effectiveness (like 30%) so the trust isn't there. 11 minutes ago, mr_hunt said: i figured. yes. not to bring up personal stuff but it came from the ex wife who i am co-parenting with. she's reluctant for our son to get a flu shot this year because she believes every ridiculous thing her idiot friends tell her. she did the same thing when he was at the age for the hpv vaccine..just dumb. 3 minutes ago, Dave Moss said: Ftr, my wife was the same way about the HPV vaccine. We developed a shot that virtually prevents a form of cancer yet for some reason still don't get on board. It's infuriating.

Kind of. Manifestations like cervical cancer were more common, but 1) men are a source of spread and 2) HPV also still causes multiple epithelial cell cancers in men like penile, anal, and throat (see Michael Douglas)

I’m not an expert, but I’ll just say that my understanding is that it’s a very rare form of cancer, but also that in very rare cases causes side effects. We also have a friend who is a doctor that basically validated my wife’s concern. So yeah... I don’t think there’s any qualms in my family about the flu shot.

And in this case, it's the confluence of covid and influenza vaccine that was the concern, not just the vaccine on its own. But yeah, like you said, you need to trust your doctor on these sorts of things because this is literally their job. They're supposed to be up to date on the latest research, or at least be aware of guidance from the FDA on any such concerns. If you don't trust them, then you can always seek out a second opinion from another doctor in your area.

I have heard Australia's flu season was relatively mild this year, due to social distancing and covid precautions. (Their seasons are opposite ours, different hemisphere.) It remains to be seen how our flu season will go. I still intend to get a flu shot, even though I don't anticipate ending social distancing this year. 8 minutes ago, DEagle7 said: The HPV vaccine thing is a huge pet peeve of mine. No brainer, most every kid should get it.

I just meant from a personal protection standpoint. If you're following all the guidelines (masks, hygiene, distancing, etc) then that should greatly reduce your risk on its own. But even with the best intentions, everyone can slip up now and then. And there's little downside to it other than the inconvenience of having to drive to the office to get it.

I picked out the best doctor I could find and pay him a ton of money every year to be on call for me and my wife. If I'm not going to trust him, then I should find a new doctor. I may be Indian, but I actually didn't go to Medical School. Which makes me trust those who did. And also makes me a massive disappointment to my mother.

October 1, 20205 yr C'mon Van. I said the best, and you think I picked a white guy and not a fellow Indian?

I wouldn't say "very rare", but no it's not anywhere near something like breast cancer. It's also a really horrible cancer to get (the cervical variety at the least). What are your concerns about it? I have no idea what your friend was talking about to be honest. Other than a slight increased risk of passing out after the shot it's relatively a very safe vaccine.

So it wasn’t just some cuckoo conspiracy theory. We occasionally vacation with another family who are both doctors. That’s who validated my wife’s concerns about it.
