I've seen it too. Heck, a friend was gloating/supporting long-lines in restaurants the same time as his FIL was leaving the ICU due to COVID. smdh.

Libertarianism is not anarchy. We are a nation of laws. Follow the law or face the consequences lawless thugs! It should also be noted that there are many illegals in Alaska. It's so easy for Russians to cross the Bering Strait and enter our country illegally.  I have it on good authority from my twitter sources that the ring leaders are illegal Russian aliens. If true, they all need to be deported, and their children caged. In fact, I think we need a total shut down of Russians entering our country until we can figure out what the hell is going on. Lastly, President Biden needs to construct a giant "Sea Wall"  across the entire Bering Strait to keep the Russians out.

Then and only then will Biden reach peak libertarianism and the crown of "Most libertarian president ever".

Some of them don't help themselves, I've seen plenty of small businesses and restaurants adapt to the pandemic and are thriving and it is no longer hurting them to close down indoor dining. Then you have the ones that refuse to do online ordering or curbside or adjust their hours. I mean it sucks and it isn't their fault but, do something to adapt and help yourselves, waiting for the government to do it for you isn't going to pay the bills.

Life does some crazy stuff to you.  If I recall you are in your 30’s and I am old enough to be a parent to you.  At your age I truly cannot understand your point of view.  It’s not even a point. It’s like a religion to post nonsense tweets.  How at your age can you be so one sided?   I’m not judging just saying. Did someone or something happen to you to not let you have any compassion or empathy for a fellow human?
This country was built on diversity. I’m so saddened that after all we’ve been thru we are so divided.  I’m no liberal.  Just want a decent discussion and start to solve problems.  Trump was an outlier to go into political life.  It was a mistake.  I own it.  I voted for him in ‘16 but within a year saw the light.  Explain how I’m wrong.  Not saying Biden is right, but Trump is a cult and I don’t do cults.

Weekly COVID update from the Doc

https://www.nothingbutthetruthmd.com/2020/12/121320-covid-19-update.html

What a week!  December 7th, the 79th anniversary of Pearl Harbor, maybe the lowest day in the history of the United States Navy, a very traumatic day for tens of thousands, a day that exemplified man's failures.

Then there was December 8th, the day that the first person outside of a study received a vaccine that many said would be months to a year in coming.  A day that exemplified man's cooperative successes.  Almost a miracle, certainly one of the greatest achievements I have witnessed in my life.  By the time you read this, thousands will have received the vaccine in the UK  I am grateful for the brilliance, the diligence, resourcefulness and resilience of those who made this possible.  A gift to the world during this upcoming Holiday season!!

The UK will shortly be in receipt of 800,000 doses, enough for 400,000 completed vaccinations.  Another 4 million doses have been ordered and will arrive in the coming months of 2021.  The United States will have 6.4 million doses ready for distribution in the first weeks after the FDA grants EUA.  It is not quite clear what the initial allotment of vaccine will be.  Apparently it will be several months and possibly early summer before additional doses are provided.  Both China and Russia have developed vaccines and are in the process of vaccinating their societies.

December 10th, Canada, Saudi Arabi, and Bahrain granted approval to begin using the vaccine.  The Vaccine Advisory Committee to the FDA recommended that the FDA grant an EUA for the vaccine.

December 11, the FDA granted an EUA for the use of the vaccine.

Individual states will decide on prioritization of vaccine administration.  There is conflicting information on just how many doses of vaccine will be available in the original allotment.  It is clear that demand will outstrip supply even for the top tier of recipients,  (healthcare workers and long term care recipients)  even if Moderna gets an EUA for its vaccine.

The European Union will soon grant permission for administration of the vaccine, increasing the demand.  Pfizer did not receive or request any Federal assistance for the research and development of its vaccine and its major production facilities are outside of the United States so they will not be coerced into routing their vaccine other than as they see fit.

REPURPOSED ANTIVRAL DRUGS FOR COVID-19

INTERIM WHO SOLIDARITY TRIAL RESULTS

NEJM  12/7/20

A randomized clinical trial carried out by the WHO examined in hospital mortality in four drugs - - remdesivir, hydroxychloroquine, lopinavir and interferon beta1a.

There were 405 hospitals in 30 countries involving 11,330 patients who underwent randomization.  None of the drugs tested reduced mortality or reduced initiation of ventilation or hospitalization duration.

This is the third study which has failed to show efficacy for the drug remdesivir.  I summarized an interview between Dr. Rochelle Walensky and Dr. Howard Bauchner in my 11/22/20 blog.  During the interview, Dr. Bauchner asked Dr. Walensky if she used Remdesivir.  Dr. Walensky replied that she routinely uses the drug.   Dr. Walensky has recently been appointed to President Elect Biden's coronavirus task force.  Hope she makes better choices for President Biden.

AIR HANDLING STNADARDS FOR INCREASING THE SAFETY OF INDOOR SPACES DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC

Epidemiologic studies now point to the fact that most of the transmission of this virus seem to be occurring indoors.

SARS-CoV-2 is an RNA virus and most RNA respiratory viruses are highly unstable, they become non-infectious rather rapidly.  When distributed by droplet they have a small radius of spread, approximately six feet.  When spread by smaller aerosol particles, once the moisture in the aerosol evaporates the virus dies almost immediately.  This may take several hours.

In indoor areas with minimal air movement the aerosols can hang around for some time, but with good air turn over, the aerosols are swept away.

Underlying risk factors of transmission

1. time indoors

2. no mask

3. low to no ventilation

These factors are relevant irrespective of the indoor location

Most of the indoor locations that we spend time in are chronically under ventilated.

The average home has 0.5 room air turn overs per hour.

Air turn over in operating rooms is mandated to be at least 20 per hour.

These authors suggest that increasing room air turnover to four to six per hour can significantly decrease the spread of indoor viral transmission.

They recommend opening windows to introduce fresh air and consulting HVAC specialists to assess your HVAC systems or introducing high efficiency air filters to increase the room air turnover.

A HOLIDAY MESSAGE

For those bent on Holiday meals with friends and or family

1.  if possible keep a window open in the  meal room

2.  keep the fan on your heating system on constantly as opposed to on automatic

3.  calculate the volume of your meal room (height x width x length) and, if you have the means, go out and purchase a high efficiency room air filter that will produce the recommended four to six air turn overs per hour.

Disclaimer:  I have no financial interest in Amazon or any company that makes or sells air purifiers

I went on Amazon and found a high efficiency air filter for $225 that will produce 5 air turnovers in a room with a floor surface of 425 square feet.  I found another model that incorporates a UV light for $275 with about the same efficiency.

NUMBERS

Deaths - there were 16,650 deaths in the last week, total 297,837

Case fatality rate - is hovering about 0.98

Hospital Bed Utilization - continues to rise on a national basis

Weekly new cases - increased by 10.2%.  There were 1,471,466 new cases in the last week.  Approximately 73,573 will require hospitalization in the next five to ten days and about 14,000 will die in the next month or so from covid related illness.

Enjoy the rest of the day

A study for your dad to review.  https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7496593/

Shows a correlation between relative humidity and droplet travel distance, which is another factor to consider when evaluating indoor air quality. Theory being that an enveloped virus particle can't travel nearly as far and the envelope may even breakdown as it accumulates moisture on the envelope weighing it down. From a ballistics standpoint, think of the effect the density of a medium has on a projectile as it's passing through it.

In summary, the 6 ft guideline could maybe be a bit relaxed for higher humidity conditions, down to about 4ft or so, but then increased for lower humidity conditions up to maybe 8 -10 ft.

Quote

A top Trump appointee repeatedly urged top health officials to adopt a "herd immunity" approach to Covid-19 and allow millions of Americans to be infected by the virus, according to internal emails obtained by a House watchdog and shared with POLITICO.

"There is no other way, we need to establish herd, and it only comes about allowing the non-high risk groups expose themselves to the virus. PERIOD," then-science adviser Paul Alexander wrote on July 4 to his boss, Health and Human Services assistant secretary for public affairs Michael Caputo, and six other senior officials

"Infants, kids, teens, young people, young adults, middle aged with no conditions etc. have zero to little risk….so we use them to develop herd…we want them infected…" Alexander added

That's interesting and makes a lot of sense. No matter what, it's good to know.

From a practical standpoint I don't see that kind of granularity to distancing making much difference.

You won't find a more humid place than South Florida (unless you're the groundskeeper at Angkor Wat), but it's still pandemic central there. It's all about what people actually do.

Right, but the question is how bad would it be there, controlling for any other factors, if it weren't as humid. Would it mean a 20% increase in cases? 30%? More?

Hard to say, but there's no doubt that the effect of seasonality of the virus was vastly underestimated by some regions/states. Humidity is one factor of many contributing to that effect.
