August 7, 20214 yr Reminder that the context of any statements of how effective vaccines are going to be in limiting future variants is based breakthrough estimates for our current vaccines. Using such estimates to make generalized statements on the long-term likelihood of variant emergence is pretty silly. Can we at least wait until the spring or so when data on a targeted booster for delta starts to come in? But otherwise, I do agree that epidemiologically, the benefit of mask mandates during high rates of community spread outweighs the risk of discouraging vaccine compliance in those still on the fence.
