Social distancing is straight up mathematically impossible in class sizes of more than 15, which is again impossible for 99% of schools. i understand the effectiveness of maskjs fine and well, sir, and still advocate for them in situations like going to the supermarket. But 7 hours a day, EVERY day, 25-40 kids crammed into a classroom? And then in the narrow hallways? Dude, your that pretty little graph will not hold up under those circumstances. A nd i'm not even throwing in the human error part, which of course is massive. So, we could, like, just take your word for it, or... We could look to the multitude of real-world retrospective studies that show masks are effective in limiting spread, including in classroom settings. A June 2020 study in medical journal The Lancet reviewed 172 other studies from 16 countries and found that while different masks offer different effectiveness, masks overall result in a "large reduction in risk of infection.” Peer reviewed. A late 2020 study looking at COVID-19 transmission in Georgia school districts found that schools in the state that required masks to be worn had a 37% lower incidence of COVID-19 among teachers and staff than those that didn’t. The study, published as part of the CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, led researchers to recommend mask use for both adults and children during in-person learning https://www.kxan.com/news/coronavirus/do-face-masks-work-here-are-49-scientific-studies-that-explain-why-they-do/
August 10, 20215 yr Masks work to limit the spread of infection. Hence the reason you need to wear them in hospitals when visiting certain sick people. It also explains why you see medical professionals wearing them in these same situations. Why do we have to have this argument over and over again?

Masking kids in school wont do jack. Its remote or let em rip. Torn again between who to trust on this topic, you without a shred of data, or researchers who spent a year studying the effects of mask wearing. I'm so conflicted... Researchers in Massachusetts recently set out to determine if schools could safely reduce social distancing length. The study's findings indicated that having three feet of social distance in the classroom is just as effective as having six feet as long as everyone wears a face mask The retrospective, state-wide study, which was published in Clinical Infectious Diseases, provides a ray of hope that schools could soon safely reopen to students full-time https://www.verywellhealth.com/3-feet-social-distancing-classrooms-5116695
August 10, 20215 yr Schools will open, some kids will wear masks and some wont. Some kids won't go to school if unmasked kids attend. There will be out breaks of Covid and schools will be forced to shut down again. The Unvaccinated anti-Maskers, will strike again.
August 10, 20215 yr Schools are going to be a crap show. They aren’t getting any guidance from the states really. In PA wolf won’t ban or require mask, leaving it up to the districts to decide. So now you’ll have a bunch of varying opinions of school board members who aren’t educated on any of the science voting on what to do. They’ll make their decision not based on facts and evidence but rather their chances of being re-elected to the board so if they’re in a district with parents who are opposed to mask mandates, well guess what, they won’t mandate it. It is as much of a political issue in the schools as it is in our country. delaware on the other hand will follow whatever the CDC says, Carney will do what they say. So our schools will be masked. We had very few cases last year even when they went back to mostly full in person everyday because they wore masks and distanced. Imagine that, something so simple and scientifically proven was working to keep cases to a minimum. the problem is going to be when there is a case or an outbreak how they handle it and I’m not convinced that any district is ready to handle a major outbreak of more than 2-3 kids.

Of course it's much better to do both, and if you're 3 feet away a mask is going to be less effective. But not ineffective. Average class size for elementary is 20 kids / class. Not 25-40. At our school at least kids are able to sit 4-5 feet apart for the most part. Every school is different of course, but just because some schools will find it more difficult than others doesn't mean adding masking "does nothing". Kids should be in school, in person. A mask is a very easy and simple way to at least help make that situation marginally less conducive to spread. Most kids DGAF about wearing masks. Ha. Ha. Public schools are closer to 40 than 25.

Or maybe the control groups were just equally uncontrollable at both. I actually believe in social distancing and the lockdowns whic worked, because distance matters. Don't get a whiplash convincing yourself otherwise now.

Average even in urban areas is 25. 40 would be a big outlier.

Maybe its just where I live. Look, I'm not saying I'm against masking the kids in school. Every little bit helps. I just don't see it as worth the political capital when it's not the true frontline. The frontline is getting adults vaxxed. These delta and lambda variants are going to breakthrough if we congregate, period. We are going back to the office back to school, back the restaurants and theaters.

I agree that getting adults vaccinated is the #1 priority. But mask considerations are made at the local level. Vaccination pushes are from a bit higher up the chain, or at least not directly the responsibility of school boards. We can do both.
