Hmm.  Feels like we've finally cut the cord.  Floating out in the ether. Anger at the faceless dismissal and marginalization of it's own fans by PE.com. But extreme gratitude for guys l

I mentioned this previously on this board, and in the past years ago on the other board.   I'm not sure Howie has ever come out and said it this plainly, but Howie is telling the truth here.

that's neither here nor there for howie.  he wants draft capital for future investments.  howie sees EVERYTHING as draft captial.  and the greatest draft capital?  quarterbacks.  they also draw the biggest contracts.

wentz is too good NOT to win enough games to get a monster second contract.  howie does NOT want that as it will capsize (heh, cap) the team.  hurts is the answer.  he'll be the gadget guy / guy backing up wentz for the next two years...  and then howie will pull the trigger on a wentz trade, getting as much draft capital as he can..  while also being able to lowball hurts on a contract after his rookie one.

if the eagles suck with hurts, all the more capital to get their "next" qb star.  they'll have the picks from wentz and a potential bad season to move up to #1 and draft whoever.

you are completely crazy

If they think they are so good at developing QBs, why not just sign Jameis Winston and try and develop him and then trade him off? Wouldn't cost you a draft pick.

Simply put, the Eagles overthink and try to get way too cute in the draft. Take the best players on the board, especially when they're positions of need.

Which team was in NE that wouldn't have already considered him earlier in the 2nd round? It was dumb pick and beyond that it looks like it was a terrible reach.

No clue. I wouldn’t have expected the Eagles to do it, so who the hell knows?

Something to consider.

Taking a tinker toy QB in round 2 is a move made by 3 guys who feel extremely comfortable in their jobs and theres no doubt Lurie had to sign off on such a move. They arent afraid of this failing one bit. They know they have security beyond this year.

This pick wont be able to be proven immediately as a complete failure and so, you will see another Howie draft, or two.

He will still have a shot at redemption whether people like this or not.

BUT,

If Hurts does not develop as a Taysom Hill type weapon, or ever become a solid backup at the very least then this will likely get all 3 canned at the same time.

But thats a few years away. Buckle up.

One other comforting thing- this cant possibly happen again. So even in 1 or 2 more Howie drafts you wont see another pick this crazy. Thats a bit of a relief. Its behind us now.

McNabb turned 31 during Kolb’s rookie season. He was coming off a 2 season ending injuries in 2005 and 2006. And it was still a terrible pick that got us next to nothing - a 2nd rounder 5 years later and a mediocre cornerback. I hated the pick by a team coming off a division championship that was getting healthy.

Wentz will turn 28 at the very end of this season. He got knocked out of the playoff game, but played all 16 before that. And the team is coming off a division championship and should get healthier.

It is like Howie wants to one up Andy and be even stupider. Here’s hoping we flip Hurts for a 2025 second...

Hurts is better than McCown and Sudfeld; I’ll at least say that much

I won't

They talked themselves into Jalen Hurts and just got too excited.

If Hurts never plays, then Wentz is healthy and playing well, so we're making the playoffs and/or competitive every year.

The problem with insurance is no one likes paying for it, and no one wants to have to use it.

Home insurance and health insurance are things that no one likes paying for yet everyone does as a necessary precedent.

QB insurance in round 2 is something no one does.

Even John Elway is having a better draft than Howie...

I fully support trading all of our draft picks for proven vets so that this brain trust can't use them on draft night.

Then you don’t take a gadget/project qb.

I don't disagree.  I'm not happy about this pick either...

I didn't research QB's at all....other than the later-round developmental types because I never expected them to take one in the 2nd round this year.  That said, the more I look into Hurts, the more I like him.  The kid looks pretty dynamic on film.

they are going to trade down. money on it.  Howi: We didn't see the value there at 103 so getting a few more picks made sense.

Easy. They still have six picks left to prove you wrong.

Elway either has amazing drafts or complete whiffs. There's no in-between.

It’s certainly not a pick I would have made, but there is a rationale behind it that seems to be lost in the panic in here

That’s rationalizing the pick. How about this rationalization, knowing you have a wild hair up your a** you wait until the 4th round where he probably would still be there and you fight the urge off and go with the best players available at positions of need. A luxury we can’t afford IMO

If any player in the NFL is a necessity, it’s QB.

Look, in a perfect world you have Brett Farve who plays every snap for two decades. Wentz has proven he’s not that guy.

So we have a very talented but often injured QB. We need insurance. If the eagles think Hurts can become a good NFL starting level QB, there is plenty of rational thinking to make the pick.

Every GM is having a better draft than Howie.
