Howie Roseman thinks his roster is built to win right now. He couldn't get a backup QB in free agency, which matters when your QB is Wentz, so he used a 2nd rounder. That is what happened. Hurts is a good person and will be a great teammate. This is still sub-optimal.

Stop justifying it

I mentioned this previously on this board, and in the past years ago on the other board.   I'm not sure Howie has ever come out and said it this plainly, but Howie is telling the truth here.

Raiders get Bowden and Ruggs.  Nice pickups for whoever the heck their QB is.

It’s really amazing to me that most of the fan base seems to have forgotten that we won the super bowl with a backup QB.

Nobody is saying you don’t need a backup QB. But there’s no reason for this team to spend a 2nd round pick on a backup QB when:

1. We already have one

2.  Could get another one cheaper if you don’t like the ones we have

3. Have so many needs because we haven’t drafted for squat

4. Had players to fill at least one said need in the very place we took the backup Wr that we didn’t need.

it’s like buying a new Infiniti as a backup in case the tire on your Lexus goes flat.  Just a stupid waste of resources.

well, heres the thing. Many of us were putting a backup QB in to our mocks. It was a known need, and mostly expected.

Only difference is that we all had it 4th round or later.

If they hit on that 4th round pick, then you could really say, who cares which order these guys were taken in. As long as they all turn out it doesnt make a difference.

So yes, theres no reason to give up. All the more reason to nail these next few picks.

Aaaand we just missed out on Zuniga.

Agreed.   If they hit lighting in a bottle with 103 and get some decent prospects with the 4th round picks....well.....

Can't believe I'm saying this, but if they wanted insurance or had lost faith in Wentz, then they should have just traded to bring Foles back.

Things we probably could've done with #53:

  • Trade up for any of the top 3 WRs
  • Package it with a player for DeAndre Hopkins
  • Trade for Jamal Adams
  • Trade for Stefon Diggs
  • Trade for Yannick
  • Trade for Fournette and a 3rd

It really really helps to have those high picks.

He had glaring weaknesses prior to being here. He totally sucked here... the answer may be both. But he should not be exonerated at all. Hes terrible.

Was it Douglas that sucked or did Howie just spend a 2nd on a quarterback when there was no need, no team looking for a QB at the time and players to fill major holes available.

I truly hate Howie. Just hate him.

We're all in this together, Jalen!

right. at that point its a really nice draft class. And what the hell if Wentz gets hurt and Hurts actually does somethign positive? All around homerun in that scenario.

We want Hurts to be great so we can trade him for a first. That’s one of only two ways you win this pick

When is he going to be great? The goal is for Wentz to play the entire season. Hurts only plays in preseason and maybe when we shutdown a team which is rare. There's really not much of a chance for him to show off

Howie's press conference made it even worse. I mean we knew there was no explanation but I was hoping at least for a modicum of some rationale. We got nothing other than apparently they view themselves as some glorified farm system to develop QBs and trade them off to other teams.

(for what likely will be no more than a 2nd rounder anyway)

I actually liked the idea of the QB farm... up until the decided to be cute and draft one in the 2nd round. It's nice when you can turn a low draft QB into something but they drafted a Fing 2nd rounder when there's other needs

Even John Elway is having a better draft than Howie...

Elway is drafting for his job. He's sucked at being a GM for years. Seems like Howie took the day off

Still not defending the pick but I had backup QB's in my mocks in the 4th rounds or later and every one of them were developmental types.  Not one of them would have been ready to backup Wentz this season, imo.

102 players will be taken by our pick at 103 and so far we have ONE player that will see the field next year !  Think about that.

Hurts will see the field.  Count on it.

You guys are overreacting...

We don't need linebackers...or more weapons...or secondary help...or defensive end help...or about a million other things...

😔

Raiders going on overkill now

I think the pick is stupid. Trying to find some logic is important.

I think Wentz has mentioned retirement. Only reason to take Hurts.

I don’t agree with your premise at all.

Agholor is definitely getting cut. He’ll be back.

Mayock will have the Raiders back as contenders

It’s certainly not a pick I would have made, but there is a rationale behind it that seems to be lost in the panic in here

Exactly my feelings. Too early for me to feel comfortable with it

That the team didn't spend a 2nd round pick on

That team spent a third on that same guy when when they already had Vick.

The only rationale I can come up with for this pick is they just don't believe in Wentz that much anymore. It's the only thing that makes sense. Not saying that makes it a good pick, it doesn't.

But that also is infuriating, because if that's the case, YOU JUST SIGNED HIM TO A MEGA EXTENSION.

Either way this is dumb. What Howie said at face value in them just wanting to "add QBs" is dumb.

Them losing faith in Wentz a year after extending him is dumb. Nothing about this is smart.

they have NOT lost faith in wentz, but they have added the ability to move on from him.  think about what you just said, they just signed him to a mega extension.  how much do you think howie likes giving those big contracts?

with hurts, the eagles gave themselves the ability to move on from wentz when he will eventually require another big contract / extension.  it's not a knock on wentz showing they don't believe in him any more.  it's them saying "yes, we know you are good..  and we DO NOT want to afford you when your next contract comes around".  and howie knows he'll get a boatload in a wentz trade.  saving $$$ AND getting draft capital?  how can that NOT make howie damn near orgasm.

Ugh, pretty much right on. There is no defending this move.  I feel bad for Wentz as he is a great player and a good dude.  🥺
