I think Wentz understands there are still 5 picks left and the Eagles can still get another WR, OL and a complementary RB to help him and Miles Sanders out

But passed in the second on adding more talent for a back up QB? And he'll trust that lot?

I mentioned this previously on this board, and in the past years ago on the other board.   I'm not sure Howie has ever come out and said it this plainly, but Howie is telling the truth here.

So, who did you have.in mind? Fact is, Hurts went almost exactly where he was projected to, just not to us.

Like I said BPA but not QB.

Hurts wasn't even BPA. Perhaps most valuable given his position? But given we have Wentz that should mean jack.

Time will tell on this one, but I stand on my earlier point....Hurts isn't here to be a true QB or take Wentz's place.

Edit: Not just Howie.  Doug and the whole FO, too.

Yeah, but this isn’t just a Howie pick. Doug seems very on board with it as well.

Was the right move

Well then Doug will be on his way won't he. How can Doug be on board with a pick that doesn't improve his team?

Then sign a good back up. Don’t Fing draft one in the damn second round.

This is why it's both. They like having a backup that can play the hill role as well. I mean Doug said they would explore that soooooo. Still hate the pick

I think Hurts may actually improve the team.  I just don't think he's a QB.  As Taysom Hill, he adds as a weapon.

My problem is that there are other holes and drafting a gadget QB (to be a rostered backup QB) is misallocation of resources.

It was a pick made because the Eagles finished the season in 2017, 2018, and 2019 without Wentz.

2017 -- good backup QB -- won the Super Bowl

2018 -- good backup QB -- went into New Orleans and damn near beat the Saints

2019 -- no good backup QB -- scored 0 TD and got bounced going out in a whimper

It wasn't the pick I would have made, but fans crying that the pick made no sense, or that Howie should lose his job need to step away from the ledge.

They picked up a quality, needed insurance policy at a vital position -- on a dirt cheap contract -- for 4 years.

You just can’t have it both ways.

If a second round pick in a backup qb is wise, then your starter is on a bad contract and isn’t a true franchise qb.

And if you have a true franchise qb, then a second round pick for a clipboard holder is an egregious waste of resources after several consecutive questionable drafts when we have so many needs.

Pick one.  It sucks to acknowledge,  but one has to be true.

One option would have been to go OL and get someone who can play behind the Tackles.  We just lost two and have no idea if Malata is going to pan out so who's the backup OT?  Cleveland from Boise St would have been an option for example.

Or they could have gone DE with Epenesa to try to add some pass rushing capability.

Plenty of other options.

There is another play here.  If Hurts is really a good, rostered, backup QB, could they be angling to trade Suds for a high pick closer to the season?  Seems like a reach.

Add: I don't think Hurts is here to be a real QB.

I’ve rationalized the idea behind drafting a good backup qb. With Wentz’s contract, the Eagles can’t hand out the kind of contracts they have perennially  for backup QBs. "Sign a good backup qb” isn’t as realistic an option anywhere. And Wentz is injury prone- he missed significant time at college and he’s been injured every year he’s been a pro. That’s an important piece that can’t be ignored no matter how much you hate the pick.

Hurts also was graded in the 2nd rd by some so it isn’t like the player was completely over-drafted.

I just have a huge concern that he won’t develop to do some of the things I expect from QB - anticipatory throws, maybe some difficult sideline  throws, stay comfortable in the pocket looking to throw first, etc. There’s too much projection for my liking with him.

Howie shouldn't lose his job for one pick, there's many reasons though.

They used Ward once on a trick play. A trick play where he didn't even attempt a pass. This offense isn't as creative as people like to think.

Dougie better come up with an f’ing arsenal of plays for Hurts with a sheet-ton of variability.  Nothing worse than being predictable.

No team in the nfl would trade more than a conditional 7th round pick for a udfa with zero playing experience whose own team passed him over for a 40 year old HS football coach.

I think a lot of people lose sight of the fact that even though Sean Payton is very creative as a playcaller -- Taysom Hill is dreadful.  I wouldn't confine Hurts' potential to being another Taysom Hill

Howie said that Sudfeld will eventually leave for a chance to start.  Aside from the fact that’s laughable, let’s play along.

So we have a franchise qb.  We enter 2020 with a backup that will have a chance to start with other teams in the NFL.

And a 2nd round pick is a wise investment in further insurance at the position.

That all adds up just fine.

If I'm Wentz I seriously contemplate wanting out. Sinking ship.

So perhaps he’s twice as productive as a passer and throws 12 passes per year instead of 6?

When the Saints put Hill in at QB it’s not innovative it’s dumb. Brees is there best player. Rarely do teams get better by taking their best player off the field in any sport.

Never liked Samuel. Even before that draft. Seemed like a screen guy and gadget player. But at this point help your QB. Especially if it’s gonna be Jalen Hurts. He’s gonna need all the help he can get

I only see 5 guys of interest left and several won’t be there when we get around to our 4th round compensatory picks. DPJ, Gabriel Davis, Tyler Johnson, Quez Watkins and John Hightower. 17 WR’s chosen Denver and Raiders 3 each, Jax picked Shenault might be something available amongst those teams too

Perhaps -- and perhaps he will be needed to win a playoff game.  Sudfeld can't do that based on what he's shown
