I mentioned this previously on this board, and in the past years ago on the other board.   I'm not sure Howie has ever come out and said it this plainly, but Howie is telling the truth here.

That Denver offense is frikn sweet.

So what WRs are left on the board? That we can pass on.

Likely the offer from the Saints.

Thinking specifically about Taylor... he seems like a really good guy.  He looks like the guy that they thought Gerry was.

Lots of love from the National media on Hurts.  Bucky Brooks and Charles Davis both love the pick by the Eagles.  I'm over it.  No more consternation on it.  It is what it is.

BTW, can we get Mayock in here as GM, please?   Local guy.  Smart guy.  Has a plan.  Makes sense.  And, he talks about players and their skill sets, not their value.  They are athletes, not stocks.

Unless Wentz told them he could retire at any time and they thought what the hell, lets go Ravens. I would then hope the signing bonus is somewhat recouped and rescinded against he cap, it should be. Then it would suck, the draft capital we gav up to get Wentz no matter hw bad a drafter Howie can be.

WHERE IS @NoDak ???  Would like his feedback

I'm pretty sure at some point last night someone mentioned that nodak said he didn't know anything about Wentz retiring.

This was about some combination of getting a talented backup to groom, QB asset development, and having a athletic gadget player who can run/throw. Which is annoying at pick 2 when we have other holes but we'll live.

I asked him what Wentz made of Reagor and he said he hadn't spoken to him because Carson's wife is due anytime now so was having plenty of space.

Roseman on Taylor...

"This guy is one of the fastest, most explosive players in the draft,’’ Eagles general manager Howie Roseman said. "He’s got some raw to his game, which was why he was there in the third round.

"But he’s got some rocket ship to him. He can find the ball. He can play in space. It’s a space game. He has the physical ability to cover the slot, to cover tight ends, cover backs. Those kind of guys are hard to find.’’

"At the end of the day, when we try to figure out our vision for this team and how we want to look, we want to be fast,’’ Roseman said. "That’s how coach (Doug) Pederson feels. That’s how I feel. And that’s how Andy feels.

"We’re not going to sacrifice talent for speed. But at the same time, this is a speed league. We talked a lot about position-less players and guys you can line up all over the field. It’s so hard to play station-to-station football on offense. And on defense, if you have a weakness, offensive coaches will find it. They’ll find the weak link and exploit it.

"So it has been an offseason objective for us to get a little younger and get more speed on the field. But we’re not selecting these players because they’re fast. We’re selecting them because they’re good football players.’’

Roseman delivered a much better explanation for this Taylor pick versus his comments on Hurts (where he appeared extremely defensive).

I happen to agree with Howie on Taylor.   A risk on a high ceiling guy yes, but when you watch this guy play you can see the closing speed jump off the screen.

Thought someone said something about him not knowing about retirement in the draft thread. But could be wrong there.

I expect the Eagles to focus on defense, but if you want a WR then Antonio Gandy-Golden is still there. 6'4" 225, kind of a Vincent Jackson kind of receiver.  Big guy, not super fast but has deep threat ability because of his build up speed, tracking ability and jump ball domination. Has some issues with drops and limited on shorter routes. Does have starter level upside.

Trying way to hard to sound like he played. "Got some raw” ; "some rocket ship”.
I like him a lot more when he doesn’t speak.

Shockingly a fair amount of national people like the Hurts pick. Obviously Wentz's inability to stay healthy is a much larger concern with national types than local guys and fans.

Also, for as much crap as McNabb got, he ended up being right.

Focus on defense? How about they focus on freaking offense bud. Why are they determined to not give Wentz weapons? Or let the OL age out.

As a point of reference, the Browns took on Brock Osweiler's contract from the Texans in what was essentially a cap space for draft picks trade.  The Texans gave up a 2nd round pick and a 6th round pick in exchange for $10M in cap space and a 4th round  pick.  So $10M of cap space is worth, roughly, a low 2nd round pick. Cap space is also convertible from one season to the next, so cumulative cap space saved over the length of Hurts' contract matters.  So, if we are saving about $5M in cap space over 4 years, based on the Texans/Browns trade we are getting roughly 2 second round picks worth of cap space value.

Obviously this is not an exact science, but it's something to think about.

I have read some comments by some smart ex-football guys talking about the economics and analytics of this.

Even for all of us that disagree with this pick (for different reasons) I do think we should all be open minded enough to consider the Moneyball aspect of this move.   If Hurts ends up being a great backup, and delivers if called upon, that could mean up to $15M-20M in cap savings to the Eagles over the life of his first contract.    That is not nothing.

It's not that cut and dry obviously, but any fair minded evaluation of this selection has to consider the salary cap implications of this move.    That combined with the reality that backup QB is probably the most important backup position in all of professional sports.    The only thing I can think of that comes close is NHL goalie, maybe.   But even then backup QB is still the most valuable.

I still would not have made the Hurts pick at #53 personally.

I was missing him during the draft. Didn't realize how much I liked his analysis until he left

I have a couple thoughts. Im not trying to say I love the pick but Im done with the negativity about it. Today is a new day and Hurts is an eagle so Im looking at if from a different angle today.

1. The eagles seem to have very particular traits they are targeting this year. 1. They wanted speed at WR. Ruggs was gone, so they took Reagor. 2. They wanted an athletic mobile QB. Their options were pretty much Love or Hurts. Love was gone. They **** Hurts.

1a-It appears to me that they have identified very specific targets and they are sticking to their board and taking their guy. Not settling. While you have a deep WR class, and there are plenty of backup QB options left, they selected 2 guys in a very specific subset of rankings at their respective positions. Basically, those two were the last ones left to offer what the eagles wanted. So they werent going to trade down and risk losing out on them. Like they have in the past with RBs when they ended up with Pumphrey instead. Right now, it looks bad like they are reaching. But if we had ended up settling for Van Jefferson when we really needed speed, or a guy like Fromm when we really wanted mobility... and those picks failed... then theyd be looked at like pumphrey picks.  Its a new strategy/approach to the draft that we havent seen from Philly. But I dont hate the fact that theyre doing it this way. I like that we are getting our guys this year.

1b-  I dont recall a single other QB pick all day yesterday. In rounds 2 and 3 where you still usually see teams scramble to get a day 2 value at QB no one traded up for one like you always see. No one even took one at all. That seems unprecedented. Except for us. We took one. This indicates something about the way teams feel about this QB class. They must really hate it. If the eagles identified one guy that they really felt good about then it was imperative that they didnt miss out.

2. The eagles place extreme value on the backup QB position. We know this. Since as far back as I can remember they went for a big name like Blake and hyped up that QB situation. And since then I can never remember a time that they havent invested extremely heavily in the position. We know what they did with AJ Feeley. We had Jeff Garcia. We have had Vick as a backup. We have had the Kolb situation. Even when we have had a home grown guy they claim to like in Sudfeld, we have had Nick Foles. We have signed McCown, and now have drafted Hurts. We have spent high draft picks with pro bowl QBs as starters before. We have the high profile signing of Vick when we had a starter in place already. We had the 2nd run for Nick Foles when we had Wentz already. etc...

-We have 27M in cap room left and the only backup is Sudfeld. I suspect the options were to gigantic contract for someone like Cam, or a high draft pick. Because no matter what, we history clearly indicates we were going to invest heavily there again. Now, we have been tight on cap and have had to re-work deals to create more space to work, and supposedly will be even tighter next year. It might make financial sense at this point to have a high profile backup on a rookie contract rather than paying a guy like Cam or even Flacco or Foles again.

3. This really feels sucky. But we know Wentz is likely to be hurt. If Jalen Hurts fills in at some point and starts making Hurts type plays willing a team to victory the way Tebow did with the Broncos, then all of a sudden everyone will feel extremely grateful to have him and suddenly the pick will look A OK.

4. Hurts wouldnt have been my choice for backup QB. As a pure QB hes not the best guy out there. But the eagles clearly envision him as more than a backup QB as they keep mentioning Taysom Hill, and Lamar Jackson. Hes not a great pure QB, but he is a darn good football player. He is a play maker. He doesnt deserve to be hated by fans. He cant help that the eagles did this. Im going to give him a chance.

Let's just remember... The Eagles are rarely talked about by the national media. Yet here they are today dominating the draft news for day two. And not for the right reasons.

Howie saying "value” instead of production with Hurts combined with his QB factory comment says they believe they’ll be able to trade him down the line.

You put him in the game for a few plays with a dumbed down package of RPOs like Foles used to run here and you let him shine with easy reads and using his legs. Even as a rookie he can handle that.  It won't be long till teams are knocking down the door with offers.

And meanwhile you've neglected other important positions on the team for a hoped return.

This is absolutely my preferred way of running the draft, and I applaud them for taking this approach.  Fit is such a big part of success so even if we have 5 guys that all seem to be "2nd tier" WRs, they definitely weren't all the same.

Get who you want and walk away from the draft feeling stoked that you filled what you wanted to fill, how you wanted to fill it.  I'm tired of settling for that 3rd choice guy because we were worried about getting "max value".

Ok here’s where I’m at this morning. I still don’t like the Hurts pick and the QB factory comment could have been one of the dumbest ever,  but I’m accepting it and moving on. Whenever the season starts again. We still have some talented players and a good HC. All we can hope for is the best. Go Birds

Not only that approach,  but all 3 picks are extreme athletes. Also incredibly refreshing.

I wish a 2nd round QB wasn't part of this plan. But taking a step back and looking at their strategy its really what many of us have wanted them to do for years.

Stop missing out on guys. Stop taking sure things instead of athletes.  They have.  They've completely pulled a 180 here in both regards. I don't know if it'll work.  They probably don't either.  But I like the idea.  I like it a lot.

I like him as a prospect but he’s so green and what’s his football iq and does he have legit football instincts? I just don’t know. We need, at least I think because our linebacking corps is just very much below par, a linebacker to come in and play day 1. I guess they think we are , fine there...
