The last two seasons we had a legitimate shot of going deep into the playoffs - that's really all you can ask - because crap happens.

They did not have a chance of going deep in the playoffs this past season. Even with Wentz healthy.

I mentioned this previously on this board, and in the past years ago on the other board.   I'm not sure Howie has ever come out and said it this plainly, but Howie is telling the truth here.

If thats the angle though wouldnt it be better to wait for the fourth round and get a guy even cheaper?

Because maybe they felt there wasn't a QB they could get in the 4th round who could be a starter and who could also be traded for a 3rd round or higher in the future? What makes this pick work is that the Eagles are almost assured of getting the equivalent of their pick back down the road. And what is the salary difference between 2nd and 4th round? Maybe $500,000 year at most?

Agreed.  After McNabb missed several games in 2005 and 2006, Andy picked Kolb in 2007.

Especially like the Luck angle.  Players are making so much money that leaving early for health reasons won't be as rare.

That is another very interesting point I didn't think about.

The players today are getting better protected and better PAID...unlike players from even the 1990's or early 2000's.

Cost is irrelevant if you ask me.  Howie does one thing well and that's the cap.  If they paid Flacco $10 million to back-up Carson and used the 2nd rounder to move up for Lamb or stay put and draft Mims, Chinn, name your prospect I would be totally on board.  It's not our money, use it to make the team better.  I would rather waste cap space on a 1-year 2nd string quarterback instead of using a highly valuable 2nd round pick on a player we hope never plays.

I wasn't made they paid Chase Daniel $10 million.  Wasn't mad they paid Foles however much he got.

Agree, Sudfeld hasn't shown a thing, just looking at what's been given to us in form of coach speak and how much they like him.

And maybe this is a way that he's looking to manage the cap.

The answer to that isn't that troubling when you look at who was selected after him:

Watkins - having already landed Hightower, Watkins is a bit of a 'luxury' pick as insurance on if Hightower flames out.  This also occurred after they had finalized the deal for Goodwin, making him that much more of a luxury.

Prince - I love him, I really do.  But the red flag of the knee injury is why he lasted as long as he did.  At the point the Eagles finally pulled the trigger you do it because... why not?  You hope for the best, but if the knee turns out to be too much... nothing much you lost in cost.

Toohill - Good pass rusher.  Bad run defender.  PS material.

He didn’t look draftable to me so the rest doesn’t matter so much to be honest.

Not sure I agree.  I think Scott is more what we expected from Pumphreys.  Pumphreys was a heck of a runner in college.  He destroyed my Cougars when they played  I think Pumphreys was supposed to be Sproles 2.0   I think Scott is.

People (not directed at you) that think Killens is challenging Scott for his role need to take another look at Scott.  Only thing they have in common is height and both have speed.  Scott is a jacked 203 with a great center of gravity.  I think Killens is likely another of those really fast munchkin RBs that on a single touch falls down.  Doug may be hoping for that Oregon kid D’Anthony Thomas, Black Mamba.  He and AR had him in KC.  Has bounced around the NFL.  I think the Ravens had him last year.  Thomas is a bit taller and probably ten pounds heavier.

I didn't say Scott I said Pumphreys. Weights are similar Killins is wayyyyy faster

Gotta get a true number two RB. Really disappointed they couldn’t land Breida. He would have been a perfect compliment to Sanders. Holyfield was a scrap heap pick up that couldn’t get on the field even with a injured Howard. An UDFA in Warren doesn’t move the needle much, if at all. I looked into him and he does nothing for me personally.

According to Afan, we picked a top-100-player-level RB in round 2. :P

He's not.  The Saints just signed Famous Jameis in the early morning hours.

I think that, like the Eagles, they want to stack their QB position.  If you look at my previous post, Payton says he envisions Hill as a future starter.

I think that Winston is competition but Hill could beat him out for that job this year.

How've you been? Doing well I hope?

I'm great how about you?

You pay for insurance, hoping you never have to use it. It still has value.

Right, the value of the insurance is that it transfers the risk from you to the insurer. The more risk averse you are, the greater the value of that risk transference. Insurers make money strictly on hard probabilities. The profit comes from the fact that people are willing to pay a premium for that peace of mind.

Sorry if posted already. Not going through 20 pages

Thought this was hilarious

I think both Winston and Hill stink, and it would take all of Payton's imagination to make either look like a good NFL starting QB

Wouldn't be the first time today I've been wrong, though

Coaches say lots of stuff. I simply don’t believe him. But if you want to take the comment at face value, that’s fine too.

The unstated assumption in the Hurts discussion is that he can play at the NFL level. It's all conjecture at this point.

The advantage of a veteran backup is that they have established that they can play in the NFL and you have a good idea of what you are getting.

The fact that we had to rely on McCown in the playoffs is more an indictment of Doug's and Howie's mismanagement of the position than it is an indictment of veteran backups in general.

Same with every draft pick... even Chase Young.  And they have Sudfeld for this year if they need him.

Next year is a loaded QB draft, the following year has 2 of the best QBs in last 10 years, imo.

Unless that guy really really sucks, you want that guy to be Clayton Thorson?

I am talking specifically about the backup QB role.

What is it with this FO and their asinine, hyperbolic pronouncements?

Gold Standard

The New Normal

QB Factory

Too much hubris for my tastes.

No filter and not being good with the cameras on.  Smart people say dumb things when they are on camera and the pressure is on.

Fwiw, I think Reagor would have been picked next by the Vikings. Think he's better equipped to fill the void left by Diggs. Jefferson and Thielen give them 2 great options from the slot

Thing is general manager's are wrong about picks. That said Howie must have heard him and in the 2nd round said "hold my beer"

GMs/Coaches say things through their actions, not words.

Some examples

  • We don't trust Wentz for 16 games
  • Our WRs were slow as hell last year
  • Our team in general was too slow
  • We desperately needed a CB who could cover

I agree in general, but I fear that this group is just smug.

Yes, crap happens. That's why you don't make such asinine statements.
