Good find.

I believe that the 'sent back to the PS' means that they can move players from the roster directly to the PS, without having to put them through waivers first... after the season starts, and with a limited number of options to do that.

Similar to options in baseball.

Looks like you get to bring a specific guy up twice for "free".  After that, needs to clear waivers.

I would assume you'd only want to use these options if you intend to dress the player that week.

I mentioned this previously on this board, and in the past years ago on the other board.   I'm not sure Howie has ever come out and said it this plainly, but Howie is telling the truth here.

It’s funny that we all feel the need to state "but I still dislike the pick” so we don’t get berated for being homers by a few very vocal haters of the pick.

This is probably directed me and that’s fine. There are just serious concerns with Hurts and what I want from a QB.

Also a negative, we haven’t had enough top 100 picks over the last few years so using one now was less than ideal.

Doesn’t mean I don’t get the logic behind the pick after the fact. I get it, just don’t like it.

My reaction at the time was, "What the F,” followed almost immediately by, "Oh, OK.”

Mine was similar, although I admit I didn't immediately go "Oh, OK"

As already mentioned my initial reaction wasn't just based on #53, it was a combination of factors (past and present).

But I guess if there are fans of any team in the NFL that should appreciate the value of a high quality backup QB, it should be Eagles fans.

So while debatable, there is also some logic behind it, even if one doesn't fully buy in to the final argument.

It does my heart good to see you posting. I missed your insights and honesty for quite a while.

If Hurts was a top QB prospect with a > 50% chance of being a top 20 QB (the bottom 12 tend to be similar to the top 8 backups), he'd have gone in the top 20, even higher.

In the second round you get the guys with a good shot at being in that next 20 QB group for 5-10 years, solid backups who start for bad teams until they're replaced. Foles.

After that you're rolling the dice, you find a few in the 3rd round, but mostly whiffs, after the 3rd round you might hit one out of ten.

Scouting is better, you're not seeing guys with top backup potential in the late rounds slip through anymore.

It comes down to tradeoffs, Howie could have used that pick for a player with a 50/50 chance of starting, then he'd need to spend $7-10M if he wanted a veteran in that 2nd tier of QBs instead of signing someone like Hargrave. I think he's stashing cap money for next season b/c he has some contracts escalating and will need flexibility if he wants to make moves, one reason Jeffrey will not get cut this year.

I only add that because I don't want to act like I'm flip flopping. I hope he turns out to be a valuable part of the offense to prove once again what an idiot I am. But I'm willing to own that I was freaking furious that day.

Rumor has it that when Carson asked how she was doing, she kept saying "it hurts!"

Due to the recent draft pick by the Eagles, it's said that Carson was triggered and snapped, holding up in a janitors closet.

agree here - Ward stays, Quez most likely to the PS unless there is an injury. or hell cut JJAW (but i dont think they will)

I think Rush is ahead of Hector if a fifth DT makes the roster, but you may be right they go light with four.

Toohill seems PS as well - have him eat with Prince. Miller staying is obvious to me. DE looks like BG/Barnett/Sweat/Avery/Miller and perhaps Hall as a sixth

Ward stays, he's a football player, one of the skinny WRs will make it through waivers to the PS.

Rush stays, he's huge with light feet, can't teach that, you need one big guy for short yardage and he has upside. They always go deep on the DL.

Toohill/Miller/Hall will fight it out for the last spot, Toohill's problem is he's best suited to the Avery "elephant" role, with RDE split out wide.

I don't know if this was posted already

In terms of the player, i think hes going to be a very good backup/gadget player. A lot of people want to say he "cant throw" but this is extremely impressive.

Maybe the Eagles think he can become a top QB. That’s all it takes. The only reason we even have Wentz on our roster is because the Browns didn’t believe he could become a top 20 QB.

I think I get that part of it, but what I don't fully understand is how going from 53 to 55 works.

Let's say the Eagles get Quez Watkins and Adrian Killins to the 12 Man PS.   Then let's say they "designate" those 2 guys to the gameday roster.   Does that mean as long as they stay in that "designation"  they can be there all season?    But being "sent back" means the Eagles use Watkins multiple weeks, but decide to substitute another PS player for Killins on the 55 Man the following week?

And can other teams still poach your PS member if he is designated as part of the 55 Man?

I think we need a Jimmy Kempski article on this.   He is pretty good with this kind of stuff, and no other Philly writer really bothers with these types of details.

Yeah I don't understand it either really. And in addition can you protect those 2 players at the beginning? I.e. protect them from being snatched up by another team.

As long as the old timers from the EMB stick around I will always be a lurker.   Hard to believe it's been over 15+ years for many of us.

Besides, where am I going to get my Civil War history fix unless I stalk you (and the other Civil War fans) from the cyber shadows?  😉

You don’t have to defend yourself. Most of us hate the idea of using 53 on a backup QB. We’re just trying to make sense of it.

Absolutely yeah. And whilst I still don't like the pick at all I am trying to now understand it and try to see why the hell they did it.

My understanding is that the 2 PS guys supplemental to the 53 man roster cannot be poached. Also, once "called up" to it as one of the +2 guys, they can stay there all season and it isn't just a gameday thing. Teams will then have the flexibility to demote those players a maximum of two times without getting poached. They can continue doing that until poached...

That's how I read it. Not sure it's accurate; simply my interpretation.

I add it because I got berated for discussing a Jeff McLane report and because I apparently was "taking it as gospel.” It’s exhausting is all.

A lot of my comments could justifiably be interpreted as flip-flopping on the pick. I dislike it less is a good way of putting it.

I pretty much come and go to the blog but have enjoyed reading you two's takes for a long time. It's good to see both of you active.

We discussed Jeff Thomas as a late round UDFA speedster flyer, but I didn’t think we’d target him due to being a turd. The guaranteed money he got from NE confirms how big of a turd he really was.
