I mentioned this previously on this board, and in the past years ago on the other board.   I'm not sure Howie has ever come out and said it this plainly, but Howie is telling the truth here.

"I think the value was good,” the executive told NJ Advance Media. "The player was going to go in the next 5-10 picks. If that’s the guy they liked, they did the right thing. You only get one pick. Seems like they got their guy.”

Nope, terrible pick. Total reach, they could have traded down to 30 and got him. Not only that Justin Jefferson is way better. He had better stats and was higher on "Mel's big board." I've never seen either guy play but that doesnt matter, I read some stats and a rankings list. Oh and some guys on sports talk radio told me it was a bad pick.

I sure hope not.  Know your fanbase.  Look how Carson has made Philly his.  The AO1 softball games, the food truck the winning at all costs.  Carson is our quarterback we've wanted for years.  He's a great human, MVP caliber quarterback who you worked magic to get here.  He's only 27 with arguably his best football ahead of him now that we have weapons coming his way.  The locker room has been handed to him and you bring in another quarterback in the 2nd round.

Howie are you that ignorant?

If you listen to the fans, you’ll soon be sitting with the fans.

I just want to take a moment to say that I really appreciate the new message board and that the Reddit site is absolute garbage.  It's nothing but memes and the same news being posted over and over.  I couldn't last 5 seconds on it.

So your wife and reddit share the same problem.

Idle Thoughts

  • I like Jordan Mailata, but we should be happy that he can be a #3 OT. He's yet to play an NFL regular-season snap. The idea that he's pushing Dillard is absurd until we see it. I'd bet on Peters taking snaps in 2020 before Mailata.
  • Hurts at 53 > Dobbins at 53. I love Dobbins as a prospect, but we're not a run-first team. I think we take Chinn if not for the injuries.
  • The comp pick system will change next year as now players are gaming the system. Once players do it, you know GMs/teams will try to fix it.

I dont believe for a second they would have taken Dobbins at 53. It was surprising when they invested a second in a RB last year, they werent doing it two years in a row.

If Mailata is healthy, he starts this year, even over Dillard.

Watching him last spring, he improved by leaps and bounds, he's bulked up (which is scary), he has tremendous length, smooth out his technique and he's a monster in the making.

Peters only needed one year to go from TE to starting OT, now he had more football experience, but not OL experience.

If you're a great athlete like Mailata, you can "fake it" the first couple years and still be better than most.

The real issue is whether the back was a tweak or something serious that could hinder him long-term.

If both turn out equal effectiveness, we get a first rounder for free.

not by a longshot but he does play with an attitude.  I also don't think Smith was like that in college, he kind of developed it as he got better.  Interesting to see how players sometimes become something totally different personality wise once they taste success.  Would you ever think watching Chad Johnson at Oregon State that he would become Ocho Cinco?

OBJ didn't seem like a huge **** at LSU.  Never know with WR.

Another Howie quote from WIP interview.

"What helps the team the most at this moment? Probably a different player at a different position because we have a great player there, but my job is different. When we make these kind of decisions I talk to people that I really trust and that I've always relied on that have won world championships and I say, 'This is my thought process. I've gotta do everything I can to make sure Carson Wentz is standing on that podium holding that trophy.' And it's funny when I say that, I see it man. I see it. I see him doing that. And I really believe that that's gonna happen.

Get rid of comp picks entirely.

And if any of you think you're going to see DJax from 2010-2017.  You're living in a fantasy land.  If he can get you 12 games and at least 500-700 yards.  I would be stunned.

I didn't expect that last year, I did expect him to play 12 games or so and the playoffs, not be gone for the season.

If Djax/Goodwin can play every game between them and catch 40-50 balls, that's more than enough, because their real value is they can beat any CB in the NFL downfield, so the free safety must stay deep. That opens up the run game and the intermediate passing game.

You don't need five track guys at WR, you do need one or two on almost every play to stretch the field vertically, giving the TEs, Ward, JJAW and Sanders potential mismatches with no help.

Pinkston was always underrated for that reason, he was limited but was a true deep threat. In today's NFL, where teams can't grab and clutch WRs, he'd be a star. That Carolina playoff game was a travesty, and along with the Patriots doing the same thing, led to the rule changes.

The Carolina game, even by the standards of that era was a complete and total joke. One of THE worst officiated games you will ever see.

And Lamb making Hurts look way better than I would normally give the QB credit for...

One thing I did notice about a lot of the Hurts to Lamb passes was, Hurts threw a lot of tight/double coverage throws to him, and it was only the excellent pass catching ability of Lamb that made these completions rather than incomplete/INTs...again, Lamb making Hurts look a lot better (stats wise) than I believe he really is.

Basically, it boils down to whether I would prefer Reagor & Hurts (picks 21 & 53) or Lamb (picks 21 & 53 traded for #16)...I would make the trade and pick Lamb all day (especially as it kept Lamb away from Dallas...but that's not the main consideration, merely a bonus)...but I can appreciate other people's opinions on selecting Reagor & Hurts, and only time will tell.

So... you discount the QB making a tight window throw (something that needs to happen in the NFL to get completions) and then use the fact the he made tight window throws to pump up your guy, and discounting 'not your guy'.   Nice work.

Welcome to the blog, you appear to already have a Master's Degree in logical fallacy.

Then you create the false equivalency that Howie has already refuted.  It wasn't about Reagor and Hurts (aka, #21 & #53) or Lamb (#16), instead it sounds more like its #21 and at least next year's first.

I thought I had already read on these very pages that the Atlanta offer request was 21 & 53...I hadn't read that that had been debunked...

If that's the case, and it was 21 plus a 2021 1st for #16, then that's way too much to move up 5 spaces...basing it on the "values" (and yes I know these picks values are very hit and miss at best) a 2020 #21 & #53 should easily be sufficient to move up to #16...

Oh, and I was a member of the Eagles board for years...I simply didn't bring my post count over...so welcome to the blog yourself, and your Master's Degree in sarcasm...

Just because you repeat this over and over again, does not make it true.  I had Justin Jefferson higher, personally, but they are different styles.  So, if you wanted a player of Reagor's style, he was the only option left.

IF Wentz stays healthy, another player would be more valuable, if Wentz gets injured, Hurts is more valuable than any other player we draft.

It's why it's called "insurance."

Joe Gibbs called the starting QB the most important player on a team, the second most important player? The backup QB.

It was sarcasm.  Personally, I don't see the need to change your screen name, but sure.  Go for it.

Howie debunked it yesterday with Ike Reese.  He said it wasn't about #53.  He didn't say what exactly the trade offer was, but he made it clear that it wasn't 53 (or wasn't 53 alone) and included 2021 picks.

I changed my screen name to match what it is on my other various social media accounts...

And thanks for the info regarding the Atlanta offer...I will see if I can find it and listen to it (presumably it was a radio interview or similar). Not being in the US, I don't have access to WIP and the like, so a lot of my info/updates are gleaned from posts on here and tweets...I just don't remember anyone posting on here that Ike Reese had said, via Howie, that the Atlanta trade offer wasn't a simple #21 plus #53...

Looked into UDFA CB Grayland Arnold. He wore #1 so he’s a very good UDFA signing

Joe Gibbs called the starting QB the most important player on a team, the second most important player? The backup QB.

Gibbs is a highly underrated genius HC and one that absolutely should be in the discussion for "GOAT".  Unlike most of these multi-championship coaches, Lombardi, Belicheck, Walsh, etc.   They all won with the same guy... Starr, Brady, Montana.  Meanwhile, Joe Gibbs won with: Joe Theismann, Doug Williams (though, Jay Schoeder also got starts that year, they were almost 'platooning'), and Mark Rypien.

And Doug Williams is an amazing situation... NO ONE expected what he did in the Super Bowl (not due to his race, though I'm sure there were plenty of those)... the week before he had a 34% comp pct for 116 yards.  Then in the SB, he lights it up for 62%, 340 yards and 4 TDs.

Gibbs did what so many other coaches have failed to do... he managed to re-define himself and his offense and team identity to match his players, rather than always trying to do it the other way.  Gibbs 3 Super Bowl victories, 3 different starting QBs.  I don't think there's another coach close to matching that.    A couple got to multiple championship games with different QBs, but they lost with those other QBs.
