I worked at the Taco Bell in High School. I cooked a lot of grade d meat.

A girl in high school with me who worked there said they got grade F and was specifically labeled do not eat.

That was when I was in 9th or 10th grade. Since then I've always ordered chicken on every item.  Feel better that you can see what it is, rather than ground beef.

But I'll occasionally eat the beef too if they give it by accident.  It's still good.  Who cares about the letter grade it got.

I mentioned this previously on this board, and in the past years ago on the other board.   I'm not sure Howie has ever come out and said it this plainly, but Howie is telling the truth here.

Kind of random but several times playing the draft game I've tried to trade back to the Pats from 21 to 23 to pick-up some extra picks.  After I make the trade it then gives the Pats both 21 and 23.  I'm like man these guys even cheat in mock drafts.

Congrats!  I'm still behind a little, but this might be the dumbest post I've seen on the new boards.

Who is the one player not projected to go round 1 you really want on the team?  Mine is Willie Gay Jr.

It doesn't really say that though. As a matter of fact, it says that their board is not a "black and white" ranking...

The board isn’t black and white. The Eagles don’t list prospects numerically and select the next available name when they’re on the clock. Using the system Douglas brought to the franchise in 2017, they rank players on five tiers and give them numerical grades with evaluations that give additional weight to how they project to the Eagles’ schemes and preferences.

Most of the grades fall somewhere in between 7.0 and 5.5. The numbers come with "alerts” based on size, character, or medical issues, for instance. "Day 1″ starter is the top tier, and prospects who fall into that category are listed according to their grade, usually somewhere between 7.0-6.7.

There could be, for instance, several prospects with a 6.7 grade at various positions, but there is an overall ranking, and one within each position. There is wiggle room and subjective choices will be made based on need, etc.

Then it goes on to say....

The Eagles selected running back Miles Sanders, an overwhelming favorite in the building, with their first pick in the second round the next day. They were up again four picks later but had expected to take a receiver based on the way their board was stacked.

Of the receivers left on their board, Parris Campbell had the highest grade of the outside receivers. DK Metcalf had a similar grade, but he had been flagged as a medical alert and was further down the board.

Mecole Hardman was next ahead of Arcega-Whiteside – they had similar grades – but Hardman went to the Chiefs the slot before the Eagles. The clock started. The head honchos huddled. Two lobbied for Campbell based on his ranking. One argued for Arcega-Whiteside, and the last holdout went along. Roseman made the final decision based on the side with more clout.

Now let's say that Campell had the highest overall grade for an "outside receiver".  Let's say he graded a "6.5" as an outside receiver.  DK Metcalf also graded a 6.5 but he was flagged.  Then we have  Hardman who graded a "6.3' as an outside receiver, followed by JJAW who graded a "6.2".  The article ONLY states what they graded as "outside receivers".  They (according to the first part of the article) have grades for other positions...so maybe Campbell graded a "6.5" as an X receiver, then "6.0" as a Y receiver and a "5.5" as a Z receiver.  But JJAW although graded as a "6.2" as an X receiver, "5.8" as a Y receiver and a "6.2" as a Z receiver.  Although JJAW did not rank as high as a X receiver he ranked higher in the other two receiver positions.  Then the article goes on to say it's based off of team needs and who has more "clout".

So hypothetically, you have scouts A & B wanting Campbell since they think a vertical threat receiver X is the biggest need and on the other side you have Joe Douglas, who feels they need more of a traditional "big" receiver who can play all 3 positions, if need be....then you have Doug Pederson who ends up agreeing with Joe Douglas....so Howie goes with Joe Douglas/Doug Pederson (more clout) and they draft JJAW.

Talk about mental gymnastics. You’re tossing in some make believe draft grades on outside receiver of X vs Z vs whatever. Campbell had a higher grade, period.

I’ll play along with the discussion of X vs Z though. Maybe Doug did say he wanted a bigger target. Maybe it was Joe Douglas. So be it, roster fit matters (although in this case, I think Campbell was easily the better roster fit). But those are discussions that absolutely should happen well before being on the clock. I’m talking weeks, not hours. To have that debate while on the clock shows a lack of preparedness IMO.

Only five WRs were taken at that point. Did they really need to wait until they were on the clock to debate Campbell vs JJAW? Of course not.

Given that most people want the Eagles to draft 2 WR, who do folks want as the 2nd WR chosen?  I'm assuming this pick will come with one of the three 4th round picks.  My preference might be John Hightower, or Van Jefferson if he's still on the board in the 4th due to his foot issue discovered during Combine testing.

If for some reason the Eagles grab a WR late (5th/6th round) I would look for Quartney Davis or James Proche.

I want nothing to do with Van Jefferson.  I think he will be a solid pro but I believe he's already 24, has reached his peak athletically and is what he is.  Maybe if they got him in the 5th after taking 2 other prospects but if he is taken as the 2nd WR no thank you.

It was grade D on all of the meat.  It was stamped on all of the packages.  I mean at least it was inspected.  Knowing what I know now about meat processing plants I have more concerns about getting fast food chicken.  I think they are primarily selling parts from damaged birds.   Now, it might be fine or something happened in processing that just made them have to cut it for parts but I don't think you're getting the meat from completely healthy chickens.

Well, then your argument is against the system that Joe Douglas apparently brought in with him (according to the article).  Joe Douglas is no longer here so it will be interesting to see if their draft board "system" changes now that he's gone.

And for what it's worth, I also think that Campbell would have been a better roster fit at the time.

Alex Highsmith  has very good potential.

I’m not arguing against his system at all. I’m arguing against waiting until you’re on the clock to determine which WR you should draft and then going against your own draft board based on a 7 minute debate because the guy you allegedly wanted got picked right before you.

If anything, I’m defending his system and saying they should have followed the board instead of making a rash decision.

The entire points of working in January-April with the entire scouting staff is to figure this out before the clock hits.

You don't study for the exam during the exam!

The board is also relative to other positions.  So part of the analysis depends on who else and what other position has been drafted.  I don't think any team operates with a black and white board.

I am looking forward to the draft.

Agreed. Roster construction, need, positional value, etc all matter during a draft. Heckert apparently was great at determining when to draft players. Howie has struggled at times. We missed out on OL because there was a run "unlike any I’ve seen” or something like that, we waited too long at RB and we’re forced to settle for Pump, and six straight targets flew off the board before having to trade back for Marcus Smith.

glad to still be able to talk Eagles .  thank god the draft is tomorrow and we have something to keep us occupied.

I dont have a great feeling about pick 21, so Im hoping we pull some Howie magic.  But hell even if it was a horrible pick Ill take it at this rate

It's pathetic.  It's gross.   But, it's not surprising.

Yup.  All the discourse about prospects, when in reality the Eagles will only draft about 8 players out of the 255 chosen.

Looking forward to folks figuratively jumping off cliffs in disappointment once the picks are revealed.

Now I’m taking this a little more seriously.

Can’t wait until the draft starts and the Eagles are on the clock and they just then decide to debate Jeudy’s medicals vs Denzel Mims character.

I kid...

In Round 4, getting 'a solid pro' WR isn't bad ROI.  I agree, he's reached his athletic peak, but this team could do FAR FAR worse in Round 4 for a WR than a guy who turns into a 'solid pro'.  It would have been great to have 1 or 2 of those last season when it all hit the fan.

That said, if they take Justin Jefferson in Round 1, then Van Jefferson in Round 4 is redundant.   Meanwhile, if they grab a guy like Reagor, Mims, Higgins or any of the top 3 (by some weird quirk of the draft process), then Van Jefferson as the 2nd pick makes a lot of sense.

So, just to change the conversation for just a moment...

I haven't seen TP or PT in any store since this lockdown began.  Upon a conversation with my dad, he mentioned that the industrial stuff is still available, as that stuff wasn't panic purchased, and it's not being ordered by most companies as they are closed.

So... I made a purchase that will cover my paper product needs for a few months...

They are due to arrive to my house in a week.

Figured I'd pass this information along.  I can't be the only one not finding anything in stores.

Inconvenient... sure.  But, better than running out.

TP has been like finding the Holy Grail for me but I’ve seen and bought paper towels at Home Depot every time I’m there. They always have a ton in stock

Again, if you read the article, it basically says that Douglas' system is NOT a "black and white" ranking.  Meaning you will almost always have 1 or 2 players ranked so close that it will come down to "team/scheme fit" and who has more "clout".   And tbh, I think what probably happened is that they were all in agreement when it came to drafting Hardman.  The Chiefs took Hardman so the next 3 WR prospects were Campell/Metcalf/JJAW, depending on fit/scheme/clout.  Metcalf was out due to an injury flag.  So it came down to Campbell or JJAW.  My guess is that Joe Douglass really did not like Campbell,  (Pederson or someone else) gave in, and they went with JJAW.  I tend to agree that it's not an ideal system...not when you end up making a decision like that based on (what seems to be) "one guy's" opinion.  We can only guess/assume it was Joe Douglas.  Anyway, if that's what it was, he's gone now so a situation like that really shouldn't come up again.....one would think, anyway.

Funny enough I was thinking the same , but I’ll say Antonio Gibson. Imagine him in this offense paired with Sanders, put him in the slot a bit, he’d be perfect for this team, I’m not sure he’s worth 53rdpick and he’s not going to last to 103

I got PT from Home Depot when this first started, but haven't stepped foot in there since then.   There's always a line, and I prefer to patronize the little businesses right now.  More social distancing there, better service, and they need it more.

Howie ultimately is responsible. He’s supposed to make the picks based on the board set for him by Douglas and now Weidl. He allowed the process to get muddied.

To me, it all boils down to waiting until they were on the clock to debate the merits of two different WRs. Take everything out of it — medicals, fit, character, whatever — they should have had that decision made predraft. Instead, they were caught flat footed (again, if the report is to be believed).
