So we drafted a backup QB with the expectation that we were already going to waste 25 percent of his value?

The more ways that people try to explain away this pick, the less sense it makes.

The save money and keep him under control argument is the weakest one, I've found. You can get a very quality backup in this league for 4-5 million. So when people say this makes sense because it gives them a cheap and controllable backup, that's also essentially saying saving a 3 million bucks difference on your cap is so important that it's worth burning a 2nd rounder on a backup.

I hope Jalen Hurts becomes the next Patrick Mahomes and this pick is looked as a genius move in a few years, but if this move doesn't work out, someone or someones needs to lose their job over it. Won't happen though, I think it was made in the first place in part because no one in the front office feels any pressure anymore, their jobs are now totally safe.

Hmm.  Feels like we've finally cut the cord.  Floating out in the ether. Anger at the faceless dismissal and marginalization of it's own fans by PE.com. But extreme gratitude for guys l

I mentioned this previously on this board, and in the past years ago on the other board.   I'm not sure Howie has ever come out and said it this plainly, but Howie is telling the truth here.

One more time, for those who are still shedding tears:

Dating back to 2005, the Eagles opening day starting quarterback has gone done in every single season aside from 2008. Carson Wentz has not thrown the last pass for the Eagles in three years.

Waahh, they used a second rounder to stabilize the QB position for the next four years! We could've drafted another JJaw with that pick! Waaaaahhhhh 😭😭😭

I know for me once their career is started I don’t give a crap where/when the guy was drafted.  Agholor first round, 20th overall?  He stinks; get him outta here.  Jalen Mills seventh round, gets torched over the top way too much?  He stinks; get someone else.

Once they’re in uniform on Sunday they need to perform.  If Hurts takes a direct snap, makes two guys miss and runs for 15 yards, I will cheer.  If he takes a direct snap, gets hit and fumbles the ball away, I’ll be ticked.  If he screws up repeatedly I’ll start griping for him to stay on the bench.

For now I’m keeping an open mind because I believe the talent and potential are there, as is the potential the Eagles will need him at a very important time along the way

Interesting about Toohill "on the fringe of being able to start."

I have wondered if he actually may be more than a PS guy. He may not be developed as a run defender, but his pass rush may already be good enough that you want him on the field on 3rd downs to rush.

The Eagles wanted a particular skill set. As good of a prospect as Lamb is, that wasn’t it. Ruggs or Jeudy would have fit better. I preferred Jeudy out of those two. It wouldn’t surprise me for the Eagles having Ruggs-Reagor as their 1-2 options.

I think the only guy they would have considered a trade up to get was Ruggs. Jeudy wasn’t on the table IMHO.

They wanted speed. They wanted a boundary receiver. Someone to take the top off of the defense. And speed. Did I mention speed?

Fwiw I don’t blame them.

This is right up there with the most nonsensical posts.  Did Parcells say this before — or after — Jeff Hostetler won him a Super Bowl??

And Phil Simms was off the Giants 2 seasons after Hostetler did that.

Again, if QB2 is the most important position on the field, you need to upgrade qb1.

It was three years later when he was 38. Hostetler was gone first.

Awful. Ban him.

You know how fans have their slogans when their teams are drafting a QB that year. 'Suck for Luck', 'Tank for Tua', 'Lose for Lawrence'

Eagles this year: 'First for Hurts'

Win the division and reach for a QB.

As the days wane on though, the pick is losing the shock value it had on draft night.

Totally forgot Joe Ostman even existed until today. He looked good in camp, I wonder if he'll ever amount to anything.

Right you are. E45 is just a nattering nabob of negativity.

Everyone deserves their day in court.  But, he should be suspended (with pay) until this is adjudicated.   But, if found guilty... the fines from the league should equal the pay he got while suspended, and then a lifetime ban from the NFL... and throw him in prison then throw away the key.

Good deal. Makes perfect sense. Hope he’s healthy.

Good move bringing clement back. I actually like the RB room as it stands.

I think it was Caplan talking about him during their post draft pod, he apparently is hoping to be fully cleared by camp

The backup QB issue isn't about whether or not the backup QB can win a playoff game or even the Super Bowl.  There are examples of that, multiple examples, but they are few and far between.  Which makes sense.  A lot of 'healthy' teams come up short on winning the Super Bowl.   The real question is: can this backup QB maintain the ship to such an extent that we still have a shot?  We saw it this past season with the Saints.  Without Teddy Bridgewater (not Taysum Hill), the Saints season would have been sunk with the loss of Brees for those 5 or 6 games.  Instead, they went undefeated (IIRC), and were in a great position to COMPETE for the Super Bowl - but they came up short.  We saw this with the Eagles in 2002.  McNabb broke his ankle, and then Detmer went down, and AJ Feeley stepped in and was able to string together wins, to preserve the home field advantage.   Its happened countless times on countless teams.  We've seen the flip side too.  1991 was an epic defense that absolutely was good enough and SHOULD have won the Super Bowl, and would have if not having been held back by the carousel at QB.

The reality is that while we (some of us, not all of us... and I was guilty of being shocked and angry about the Hurts pick at the time and for the next 24 hours) don't see the value of backup QB in 2nd round draft capital in a year where yes, there were some players that could have helped this team in other positions (Specifically, the names bounced around are: Willie Gay, Denzel Mims, Dobbins, and Jeremy Chinn).  Frankly, NONE of those guys will be the linchpin for the Eagles' success should Carson Wentz go down for an extended period of time over the next 4 seasons.  And while there's no guarantee that Hurts will work out, there's no guarantee for the others either.  And yes, admittedly, the odds of hitting on the 2nd round QB is lower than a 2nd round WR or LB... but the reality is that the payoff for a hit on that pick is also dramatically higher.  Risk-reward.  It's the nature of the draft.   And... we won't know who was or who wasn't a good pick for a while.  We'll see.

Don’t call me negative just because someone won’t let you have it both ways.  Either it’s poor value or there is a problem with Wentz.

ok then. He still gets his day in court.  I hope its not true... but given the charge, I'm not sure how it wouldn't be a bad situation even if he's not 'guilty' of those particular charges.

Sounds like they might not be done

Well I think he's already retired from the League.
