I mentioned this previously on this board, and in the past years ago on the other board.   I'm not sure Howie has ever come out and said it this plainly, but Howie is telling the truth here.

His catch at the sideline in the closing minutes of the loss to the Seahawks during the regular season was probably the single best catch by an Eagles player all season. ("Holy Cow! Did he actually grab that and somehow get both feet in bounds!") But it is routinely forgotten by most fans because they don't like the player and the play really didn't impact the game at all. But it was a great play and an example of what he's capable of doing.

It's not forgotten by me. It is however 1 play in a very forgettable rookie campaign.

I don't even know how to explain it, the guy was flat out dominating in the pre-season. I realize that he was going up against non-top tier guys and vanilla defences, but he was still dominating, which is what good players are suppose to do. Then the regular season hits and he looks like he doesn't even belong in the NFL, had converted AAF QBs beating him out at the WR spot. Something's got to give.

That's the thing I don't understand... He showed glimpses and I get there would have been a step up in level to the regular season but still he looked good in preseason so I would have expected some level of competency.

The Eagles are your team but not above criticism even by you but when it comes to your country you rather go and turn on FOX and block the thought process like an ostrich. Might as well put me on IGNORE too but I didn’t have to tell you that

About the only time he showed good ball skills was that over the wrong shoulder catch vs the Giants.

It was a bad rookie year, no getting around it. Let’s see what happens this year. If he doesn’t make a big jump, he’s gone.

I can’t predict JJAW as a finished NFL product, but we’ve seen enough examples to know some guys just take longer to become whatever they will become.

It probably didn’t help trying to get him to learn every position right away. He’d have been better off having a smaller package of plays to learn and get good at first, and then add more as he improves.

I realize that it was only the Giants, but I'm surprised how many times JJaw got open to not have Wentz look his way. There are definitely issues between the two in terms of chemistry/being on the same page.

We should all probably go back today and make a few posts there.

Re: Ertz' extension

He has 2 years left on his contract (no guaranteed money left, but dead money for us given his signing bonus). We should not extend him until the 2020 season is completed. If he plays well, he has trade value and we can discuss extension. If he plays poorly, then we can negotiate a better price or just not extend him.

There is no benefit of doing it now, unless we get a great deal. Ertz already turned down an offer from us, so he wants more money which is his right. Wait a year for more information, then make a decision.

My gut says the Eagles are questioning what they have in Dillard. Apparently they were interested in OT draft prospects early, rumors of being interested in Williams, now they want to bring back Peters...

Bring back Peters according to who?

Although to add more smoke:

JP is a no brainier to bring back, at the right price. You can't risk Dillard sucking or getting injured, need a legit guy at LT in case, and that is JP.

It’s not confirmed but it’s all over Twitter. If they do bring him back I think they’re admitting they botched the Dillard pick. You don’t trade up for a player round 1 and not start him year 2.

I really think there was smoke to all the fire with the pre-draft rumors.  Only problem was it was a loaded OT class and who wants to trade for a guy almost 25 when the team that drafted him could potentially be giving up on him after one year.

Maybe they bring back Peters, have Prince learn from him and try to groom him as the future LT.  Also, any extra time Mailata has with JP will only benefit him.

Only negative with JP is that you risk losing one of your young guys to carry him.  Who of the young lineman do you release or try to sneak on the PS?  Opeta? Pryor? Herbig?

Relevant in the OL discussion. It's hard to play OL as a rookie!
- Seumalo looked much better in years 3 & 4 to the point where he's an above-average guard
- Kelce really struggled with power early in his career
- Pryor was "fine", but was not ready in year 1
- Lane Johnson still discusses getting whipped by Justin Houston as a rookie.

Give Dillard a chance.

I swear if Dillard turns out to be a bust, coupled with the already projected disappointment that is JJAW... That 2019 draft class is gonna be all-time buster, might as well replace 2007 with 2019 for the reference below.

Did Wentz not look his way, or did JJAW run the wrong pattern and end up in the wrong place, so Wentz couldn't find him?   I mean, we did watch JJAW literally run into team mates.

Dillard has not instilled a lot of confidence to this point.  Losing Big V also created the need for a quality OT back-up who performs well.  Prudent to draft and claim OTs for the back-up role.  Peters is still out there, though he may not be able to play all 16 games.  Dillard still hold the position for now and let the competition determines who win it from him.

I think Dillards biggest issue is he is physically and mentally weak.  Much like JJAW he his body is nowhere near NFL ready.  He needs the right nutrition and weight program to build his body to deal with the best the NFL has.  Mentally, I really think the game the Eagles put him at RT reallllly messed him up.  To me, and I'm just a casual fan, it seems he hasn'y recovered from that.  Couple that with the stories of him crying during training camp and you have a weak minded player.

So not only are you dropping in talent level from JP but also the mental aspect.  JP was a warrior, win at all cost, you touch my QB I'm coming after you guy.  I don't see that fight in Dillard.  I hope I'm wrong.  I want him to succeed.  I want him to anchor the LT position for the next 10 years.

Dillard was fine when he was in at LT.  It's silly the amount of hand wringing going on over that guy.  He got tossed in at RT without practice and he fell on his face.  No reason to write the guy off.  And I'm calling the dude a "kid" like people love to do.  I hate that ish.

I don't think anyone is really writing him off yet but it's safe to question the Eagles commitment to him after all of the rumors.  I just posted about his mental toughness. That game at RT could have really effed him up.  We're finally free of the headcase that Nelson was.  Do we have another brewing in Dillard?  I truly don't think he ever bounced back mentally from the game he got abused in.

We're already giving Brandon Brooks a pass for his anxiety.  Do we want a mentally weak LT protecting Carson's blind side?
