I love how everyone bishes about the DE when we've had absolute dreck at the CB position the last 2 years, maybe 3.

I willing to bet Barnett, Cox, etc get a few more sacks without the QB being able to get the ball out in 1.8 seconds everytime.

This also has something to do with it.  I remember during the Jim Johnson era how many times we would get "coverage sacks”, when the QB is running around with no one to throw the ball to.  Doesn’t seem to happen nearly as often now.   Of course, that has a lot to do with the way the NFL has evolved but it would be nice if the front 4 had a little more time to get there.

I mentioned this previously on this board, and in the past years ago on the other board.   I'm not sure Howie has ever come out and said it this plainly, but Howie is telling the truth here.

Nice.

Just looking at the rest of the first round, I would say Barnett stacks up well. How many players taken after him would you say clearly are better than him or you would trade straight up for?

Allen was a medical flag, Humphrey has been really good, White and Watt have been studs and Ramcyzk has been solid. Engram has been good but injured a lot.

Two of the defensive ends taken after Barnett (Harris and Charleton) are certifiable busts. McKinley didn’t have his fifth year option picked up.

I was indifferent to the Barnett pick at the time. I called him a snap jumper in college and a guy with only one pass rush move. I was hopeful that his three cone (a good barometer for pass rushing) would translate.

The problem with Barnett has been availability.  Now for a lot of the players on the team, that has been an issue.

And penalties.

LOL, speaking of...

Is there a recording of Reese’s call of SBLII anywhere on the internet? I don’t think I’ll be able to listen today, but it’s something I want to do one day.

Dline has masked the secondary for years. Thankfully Howie finally decided to try and fix it

I think there’s a total disconnect when discussing Barnett.

I think most can admit he hasn’t played up to the expectation of the 14th overall pick.

That doesn’t make him a bad player either.

Exactly. And the pick is gone.

We do need another rusher in the rotation though. I don't know where we get one.

Not yet.

Only guy that jumps out is Watt...but he probably wouldn't produce the same in a 4-3

For the full game, @VaBeach_Eagle may know a better source.

That would be awesome.  Beats hearing Collinsworth's 'take' on the TDs that were reviewed interminably long!

Coulda had a former 1st round pick... for only a 7th.  Howie... asleep at the wheel again!!!

Seriously though, I think Griffin would be an ideal add, along the Chris Long level of help.  BUT... I think he's priced out of our market.  Then again, the longer the market goes, the lower his price may be.  Now that it doesn't impact Comp picks (yeah, not a huge deal in the grand scheme of things, but if waiting 24 hours to even a week can make a difference, you wait)... I expect most of these unsigned guys to start going off the board.  Griffin is likely waiting for Clowney to set his price, then Griffin will come in just under that.  And FWIW, I would rather have Griffin 10x over Clowney.    So, to set a price on Griffin, I think he was paid $6M last year, I'd be willing to go $5M average for a two year deal - maybe $4M signing bonus, so his cap cost would be: $5M this year ($3M fully guaranteed), and carry $2M dead next year, which is not ideal, but that's how the game is played.  If they think he can play a second year on the deal, maintain that $5M cost on the cap with a $3M salary.

JP sounds like agent speak for "no one is interested"

I think it could easily be argued that you haven’t shown any objectivity from the beginning.

Hes proven that to be wrong though.

Big misconception in the blog that's been repeated a few times in the last couple pages.  Barnett playas the run really well.

Lol. Pay attention. He does not.

You say mediocre but then you go ahead and list all their weaknesses while not acknowledging any strengths. You may not have outright said it but that's what your post implied. I don't think you're wrong in your assessment of their weaknesses, but you have to acknowledge they have their strengths as well (obviously, or they don't get drafted). I'm not even sure I disagree with the overall sentiment that it wasn't a great draft, I will always hate the Hurts pick and they took some really raw guys, but you can't just say "this was a mediocre draft, here's all the things these guys don't do." Like others have said, no player is perfect.

I said the draft (class) was mediocre. I have been saying that about this draft class for months.  (Heck, a number of us have started talking about next year’s class).  This was not a high cream of the crop draft and flaws in most of the players that need to be worked on to make them better players. That’s to be expected the further you get down the draft.  Cream was pretty much Young, Okudah and a couple of the first round OTs.  The strength of this draft was it had a deep middle. Howie did a nice job working that.

Here’s the thing (channeling the inner Joe Biden), there is potential in all the players.   I have commented on that. Reagor, for example uses the upper body feint really well.  His stutter step is not as refined.  (On the other hand for a long legged player, Hightower has a nice stutter step and change of pace but his upper body tells you where he is going). Reagor is a hands catcher. He snatches the ball.  His height was pointed out by the TV talking heads but in reality, he is an inch shy of six feet.  He gives two inches to Jefferson in height and three to Lamb.  Jefferson also has a slightly larger wingspan as does Lamb (33 inch arms and 32 1/4 versus 31 3/8).  But then look at his vertical and his broad jump compared to those two.  His explosiveness and ability to play above the rim means he plays taller than either of them with virtually the same catch radius.  And he has the biggest hands of the three.  But the taking plays off is why Clowney is still a free agent. Doesn’t work in the NFL.  But now, this is his livelihood.  Working towards that next contract.  I am sure Clowney and others like him will be drilled into his head. He can fix that. Neither Maclin nor DJax could block worth a damn when they were drafted  But DJax has learned how to get in the way, just enough for it to work.  He can get to that level.

Take Hurts.  Accurate passer. Throws a good intermediate pass and nice accuracy on his long ball.  But it takes forever for him to launch it.  Is that a reflection on his ability to read defenses. Maybe some of it. But some of that is in his mechanics.  I compared to Foles coming out of college.  Foles was available in the third for a reason.  The year before the draft he was being projected to sneak into the first round. He went back the next year and had awful OL play.  That made his long delivery stand out.  I think if you could go back in the Blog to my comment on him, it was "Here’s the windup, and the windup aanndd the wind up and the pitch.”  Well, you can say the same for Hurts. 3.08 in the NFL gets you sacked and Carred, I don’t care how good your legs are. Frankly, Carson needs to keep pushing his 2.71 down. Now the 2.71 and the 3.08 can be a bit misleading. Both love the intermediate and long ball and those take more time to develop but that windup could get him killed.  But it can be fixed.

I think penalties are inevitable at DE.  There are going to be some offsides. There are going to be some roughing the passer.  That’s the nature of the beast in the no touch the QB league. The unnecessary roughness needs to be cured although I thought one of those was bogus.

Carson’s wind up is similar to tebows. He tends to drop and windmill his arm.

Charles Harris getting traded should tell you how hard it is to find EDGEs in the NFL.

Yes.  Free 15 yards are not ok.  One may have been bogus, but they were both DUMB.

The roughing the passer on Wilson was fine in my eyes, as they let Clowney have a free shot on Wentz, that was at least, some sort of retaliation or trying to get a free shot on the QB, since they were slow with the flag last time.
