He came back on about 10 minutes later. Nothing really interesting in the second half, mostly just shutting down questions or not commenting on specific things. The two only slightly interesting things is he said he trusts Howie and he's excited to have diversity at the skill positions.

I just figured whomever the IT guy in charge of the streaming f'd up and the team just said, "ok we're done." I didn't bother checking back

I mentioned this previously on this board, and in the past years ago on the other board.   I'm not sure Howie has ever come out and said it this plainly, but Howie is telling the truth here.

JJaw ran a 4.49 at 225 lbs or so.

The problem with the Combine is players started training for it, and putting up less meaningful numbers. So you have guys putting up great numbers in shorts in a straight line out of a sprinter's stance, but who take a half second to get up to speed out of a vertical stance, etc. So they should run the 40 in pads from a football stance.

Since we have the technology to note many aspects of play right off film in a form that allows comparisons, the value of Combine tests is reduced.

And the 40 is probably the least useful test, but the other tests have reduced value b/c people train for them, especially the agility drills.

At this point, I'd rather find some AI software that can measure velocity running specific routes that can measure how much a WR slows in and out of standard cuts.

And it depends, jumps matter more for linemen as a measure of leg explosion, but whether a WR jumps 38" or 42" is less important than whether he can high point the ball.

By the time the Combine comes around, teams have watched a lot of practice, yes practice, and game film on players.  Today, even HS teams are using cameras to film practices.  Scouts observe both. They know what their impressions are about the kids.   The drills in the combine are becoming more and more for the audience at home than the teams.   Now the results may point to work levels for some players but not all.   That question on work levels drove down Orlando Brown, a 345 6’ 8” OT because of a poor result at the Combine.  His response was look at the film. The Ravens did and thank other teams for not doing so.  A man that size getting down in a track stance is a joke.   A big part of the drills are how players take instruction.  I do like the footwork drills for DBs and OL mainly because watching games it is hard for fans to focus on those.  I like the three cone for agility and bend for some of the same reason but that is as a fan, not a team that has obtained game film including all 22 from the colleges. For teams, it is the interaction with players and the, original purpose, the medical, that drives the Combine.   This idea of climbing the boards is unlikely in this day and age for most teams, although Jerry does seem to still like names on the second day.

For those interested, Joe Marino from TDN is a good friend of mine.  His wife and my wife are best friends from college.  They both stopped by yesterday in our backyard for some "social distancing" drinks, and Joe had some really good things to say about Reagor.

1)  Joe interviewed him at the combine this year, and specifically asked how it felt to have a QB that threw an accurate pass 31% of the time, by far the worst in the country.  Joe figured Reagor would use that as an excuse for any lack of production, but instead, he responded that it really helped him become a leader in many different ways throughout the season.

2)  This led me to ask about his unwillingness to block or take plays off if the play isn't designed for him.  Joe went on to say that a lot of players on offenses in the Big 12 are specifically asked and coached to NOT expend any unnecessary energy on plays where they aren't involved (some are literally coached to not even move after the snap).  I don't know if this is a fact for Reagor, but I thought it was an interesting thing to look at.

3)  Joe also said that Reagor is built like a tank.  He's not some skinny burner.  He's a thick dude, and even if he doesn't get the necessary separation, he will out muscle and obviously out jump anyone near him.

4)  He really needs to work on the concentration drops at the next level.

And CeeDee Lamb is much more slight - 6'2" sub 200lbs - I heard one analyst specifically mention that about him and a reason why he wasn't as high on Lamb as some.  Fingers crossed

Why would Cowboys keep Clayton Thorson over Rush?

I think Hamler a little faster but Reagor bigger and stronger.  Hamler got dinged up quite a bit at PSU (I'm PSU fan)

They were over the allotted amount of coopers on the team?

I call BS.  Anytime you like a player enough to have "stunned silence" when he's drafted in round 3, then you would have drafted him in round 2.

And if they were smart enough to think that highly of him in 2012, then they were equally stupid drafting a LB over him in round 2.

Yes.

The cost was $6.7M.

In the Philippines where I reside 2 of the largest employment opportunities and better paid are call centers and online data entry work. This is because they speak English better and more than other 3rd world countries. I’m sure India is the same. Call center agent makes about $1.50 per hour and with some benefits ( but nothing compared to US and for sure Europe ), usually have to work night shifts. Data entry ( copy/paste, simple spreadsheets ) $3-4 per hour but no benefits and not so many hours. Most of these people work for US and Canadian businesses maybe some other English speaking countries like Britain, Australia and such but not sure. These are highly sought after jobs so good for the Philippines but probably bad for US and Canadian workers. Globalization, raising the standards of living where there is a drought of gainful employment. As you can guess the labor laws are virtually nil and even then not strictly enforced which is all brought about when the demand overruns the supply

I was chatting to an old colleague in India recently, and in his area, the outsourcing jobs that were there 5 years ago, are drying up as some companies bring people slightly more west or very west for various reasons.  My org put some support into Eastern Europe over India as the costs are still palatable, and there were more qualified resources available.  It's going to be interesting to see how things change with the whole China thing that happened  recently.

The NFL is a copycat league.  This draft, for all teams, was about emulating the Chiefs and getting as fast as possible on offense.

It's a little surprising that Watkins went as low as he did, but every other WR who could run went very early.

What did we sign Rodney for again?

Let's get a list of 2017 first rounders with declined options.  They may offer interesting value a couple weeks into the season (or now) for late 2021 picks or, of course, interesting reclamation projects in FA next year.

Call me a 40 chaser all you want...John Ross was good in college, a burner in pads too, and has flashed the same ability when healthy in the NFL.  If Reagor settles into the X, we don't hit on Goodwin/Hightower/Watkins, Ross could be good, cheap competition to throw into the fire at Z for 2021....or for the stretch run this year if Desean finds himself on IR.

He admitted they got too cute. He said they did a tremendous amount of research and they were overconfident that he would be there. He even said they weren’t concerned at all or were even holding there breath as the picks were going by. They were 100 percent certain they could build the team and then draft him.

I honestly have to say, he’s the draft pick I’m most excited about so far. I think he was good value where we got him. It’s also nice to see that it seems like he knows what he’s in for. Hopefully his play matches that.

It's hard to find consistent Z WRs.
It's not hard to find slot WRs.

No disrespect to Justin Jefferson, but that was the issue.

During his opening presser as an Eagle, Taylor mentioned that it wasn’t a scout or personnel employee doing the digging – rather Jim Schwartz himself.

I kept getting phone calls from Coach Schwartz [Eagles Defensive Coordinator Jim Schwartz], the linebacker coach [Ken Flajole], and to be honest, I didn’t expect to come to the Eagles, but when I got that phone call I was overjoyed. I’m really excited to become an Eagle, and just looking forward to the future.
