It may have been mentioned before, but if you can, go listen to the Inside the Birds podcasts (Mosher and Caplan) where they talk to Joe Banner.  It's in two parts.  Great stuff around the draft process and roster building.  Very relevant as Howie appears to be continuing the Banner/Reid philosophy.

His explanation of why they never took a LB or RB in the first round makes a ton of sense.  The talent gap between first round and second/third round RBs is much less than the gap between first round and second/third round linemen.  He rattled off Waters, Garner, Duce, Westbrook, and McCoy as examples.

I listened to it. Both podcasts with Banner were great. He gets a a bad rap in here, but Banner is very insightful and doesn’t get enough credit for how good we were in the 2000s.

I mentioned this previously on this board, and in the past years ago on the other board.   I'm not sure Howie has ever come out and said it this plainly, but Howie is telling the truth here.

If they put that in my running shorts they would see that I've maxed out at over 80 mph on the ride home from one of my 1/2 marathons

It's better than 40 times.

Aiyuk & Reagor absolutely play faster than Justin Jefferson.

It might be, but I don’t know how much info can be gleaned from max speed. Maybe they can aggregate a player’s top speed (over several games or a dozen go routes) to see true game speed, but one snap shot for a single moment in time doesn’t do it for me.

I’m excited to learn more about how teams use the GPS tracking. I’d love to know how teams measure speed. Digging past max speed, do teams use average mph once they’ve reached the stem through the rest of the ball tracking? Is it possible to do that?

I know HE has posted about Tee Higgins’ max mph, but is it all that impressive if he’s slow off the line? Perhaps teams account for both when trying to measure speed?

Negative stories abound if the team under performs.  I mean don't you think Howie was leaking all of those negative stories about Chip when the Eagles played poorly in 2015.

I don't know where negative stories leaked from the Chip error.  I don't care.  He was dysfunctional as a human being, so having dysfunction within the organization while he was at the helm is pretty much par for the course.    I was referring back to early in the Andy Reid era.  2002 - the Eagles started 0-2, in their new stadium, nothing negative leaked from the organization, they got the ship righted, etc.  2005 - they had trouble, and things leaked, because they had a snake in their midst.  They eliminated the snake, 2006 - not a great year, no ripples... 2007, 2008 same deal.

Sorry, expected negativity to permeate from a team just because they are doing poorly shouldn't be the norm, nor the expectation.  Good teammates rally together, they don't point fingers.  And if tough times come and finger pointing starts.  That person should be removed, regardless of their talent.  It's easy to do and say the right things when things are good.  True character is revealed in tough times.  And I have no patience for a player who can't even stand behind their own statements and put their name to them.  That's even worse then what TO did, IMHO.  At least TO was man enough to say what he had to say himself.  He was still extremely selfish and a prima dona, but at least he was upfront about it and didn't try to hide behind media moutpieces.

The same can be said for the 40 time.

With GPS tracking, they can also figure out "Avg. speed", "time to max speed", etc. They can also overlay that by playing surface. Some guys are better on grass than turf. Teams like the Eagles who invest more in analytics will have edges.

Highly disagree here...Celek was a complete TE with sub par QB play most of his career.  Switch him and Witten out and who are we talking about as a HOF'r?  This might be a stretch, but he spent most of his career with a QB who couldn't use TE's properly.

He was also used as a 3rd OT quite often in pass pro.

We’ll see how teams use it. All of the bolded seem far more useful than max speed, which can last for a stride or two.

I don't think that take is correct. He spent 2 seasons behind LJ Smith as that starter on teams that didn't go heavy 12 personnel.  In 2010, he played on a team that had 3 better receiving options in McCoy, Maclin and DJax.  He had the same amount of targets as Avant about but less receptions.  He wasn't underused.  He just wasn't as dynamic as the other receivers.  His production went up the following season with Vick.  I think he was a good TE.  He may have been great if he had played in a different scheme with more focus on the TE.  I don't think it was QB play as much as those factors impacting his career.

Its way more meaningful than the 40, if you ask me.

Personally, I wouldn't be as interested in the max speed so much as the total graph of v vs. t.  How well does that player maintain that speed.  That's what determines true speed.

@ManuManu Appreciate all the tweets and stuff that you share with us.

Definately a better speed metric than a 40 time. I'd be curious to know exactly how detailed they can get with it. Can it be broken down situationally? Also, need to be careful of falling into the trap of something a guy did that one time. How repeatable is it? What is the average or, possibly better, the mean over a several game period?

Edit: didn't see you mentioning similar things later on...

Banner's issues were never about his ability to bring a cold, logical explanation to a situation.  It was that he only could bring a cold, logical explanation to a situation.   If there's something that he can explain from an actuarial table, then he's going to be great.  If he is asked to discuss when a player over 30 should be brought back or not, his answer will be based on the actuarial table.  Dawkins shouldn't have been let go so unceremoniously.  But, Banner in his cold accountant way, set a price and a length and wouldn't come off of that.  Dawkins should have had a little more give and take, back and forth.   It wasn't the wrong move to not sign Dawkins for 3 years.  It was the wrong move to let him leave after 2008, especially given the massive amount of change that came to the defensive side of the ball with the death of Jim Johnson.  Having Dawkins around would have helped the transition to Sean McDermott, which might have saved us all the agony of Jim Washburn and Juan Castillo moving to DC.

This is where the data analysis can be fun for nerds.

Max speed might be great.  Perhaps more important is the number of times a player hits 20mph?  Doing that multiple times shows both quickness/acceleration to ramp it up quickly and the routes/vision to get themselves in the open field in the first place.  Or maybe that is too dependent on QB/scheme.

At that point, it's a ton of technology and analysis...it might be just as easy and informative to look at how many receptions over 30 yards a player has.

@VaBeach_Eagle  wondering if know how to or are able to add an Eagles logo for when you bookmark a page.  Would be nice to have instead of blank.  If not, no big deal.

Jumped on this morning, and there was the Eagles logo on the bookmarked page.  Love it.

I wonder how accurate gps data is for these trackers.  If it is accurate, it makes the combine nothing more than a show for media.

I talk about his importance all the time. Even with eagles looking at 50 mil over the cap next year, I’m not worried about it cause I know this guy and Howie know what they’re doing in that department

Kittle just has that I'm a bigger, stronger, faster, meaner man than you and I'm going to dominate you on every snap attitude.  Nasty nasty player.
