Going back to the WR scouting discussion.  Peter Warrick was unstoppable at FSU.  Drafted in the first by the Bengals then nothing.  Just shows how unpredictable the draft is.  Thought he would be a stud in the league.  Part of his demise may have been going where careers go to die with the Bengals.

I don't know.  Chad Johnson was drafted a year later and had a much better career with the same coaches and QBs.

I mentioned this previously on this board, and in the past years ago on the other board.   I'm not sure Howie has ever come out and said it this plainly, but Howie is telling the truth here.

Except, of course, that Chad Johnson and TJ Houshmandzadeh got drafted literally the next year...

I think a lot of times posters forget the times a person might have agreed with them, remembering mostly the livelier arguments/discussion. That’s how we end up with hyperbolic statements and name calling such as fan boys.

I don’t recall anyone suggesting Howie was without faults, or that he has been a greater drafter over the past few seasons.

True, didn't think about that.

Yup. Housmanzadeh too. Even Chris Henry a few years later showed some flashes.

He also suffered a knee injury that sapped his athleticism. But I don’t think he was going to become the guy we expected anyway.

I remember going back and forth with AF about him. He didn’t like him due to his bad workouts. AF got me on that one.

Those mid '00s Bengals teams were pretty good actually.

shouldnt be.

I'd say they were the definition of mediocre and should have been better. Outside of one year they were the perennial 8-8. That's NFL purgatory.

How are you so certain that it’s all Howie now and that Weidl doesn’t have the same influence as Douglas?

Its not the same situation Widl has been here for years now and has been under Howie for all that time.

Ed Marynowitz (sp?) and Joe Douglas were "football guys" brought in from the outside to help howie with the draft. Those types of guys are finally gone and Howie has no one holding his hand.

He just has his staff under him. The Weidl situation is nothing like the others. Howie is running things now.

They had a couple good teams. 2005 and 2006, I think. Before Palmer went down, that '05 team was looking really good in the playoffs against the Steelers and eventual champs.

I don’t think Weidl being here four years after spending 11 in Baltimore changes the dynamic all that much. He still sets the draft board, just like Douglas.

I’m not saying it’s Dwight Freeney-like, but Barnett has a functional spin move. It was laughably bad his rookie year.

Really nice get-off by Barnett. The LT over-sets and sets up the spin

Joe Douglas was a big name brought in as soon as the other football guy was gone. Giving the impression that they always needed a football guy holding Howies hand.

Weidl was not in that same stratosphere of fanfare behind his name. And they didnt bring another guy like Joe Douglas in from the outside this time, finally. And, Weidl has now been under Howie for 4 or 5 years. Hes basically home grown under Howie. Theres no rational way to view him as overseeing Howie, or even his equal. Hes always been under him, and has only grown in to the position he now has. He hasnt been a high profile hire in a prominent position from the outside.

Even if you still call it Weidl's board, his board and his picks will still reflect on Howie more than you could ever pretend all the Joe Douglas picks did.

Joe Douglas sucked and our last 3 sucky drafts are on him. At this point, if Howie's drafts suck, theyre going to be on him.

Despite a easy schedule every year, that sort of describes the post Johnson cowpads.

Douglas was under Howie too though.

You might be right that Howie is taking more control, but there’s no reason to be so certain about it. Weidl has the same job description and title as Douglas had and was Douglas’ right hand man.

That was the organizations nice way of putting it. Though he only got his GM job back once they hired the high profile "football guy" to work with him. So... no he wasnt.

Now,  you can say Weidl is because he has just come up through the ranks. Even with the same job title as Joe Douglas, the circumstances are different. Weidl has been one of Howie's underlings since his start. Douglas was always his "equal" though realistically he was Howie's boss when it comes to the draft.

Do you have a link that supports this or is it your read on the situation?

Theres no link, and its not my read. Its literally what happened.

I’m not doubting why Douglas was brought in, I’m questioning your assertion that Weidl doesn’t have the same role/voice that Douglas did.

Speaking of AF, has he landed here yet?

He was here the first few days. Haven’t seen him in a bit.
