I mentioned this previously on this board, and in the past years ago on the other board.   I'm not sure Howie has ever come out and said it this plainly, but Howie is telling the truth here.

Those rules mean well and it will expose owners and executives to candidates they otherwise most likely wouldn’t have considered. I doubt it will make much of a difference. Hopefully the rules stop there and they won’t pass that idiotic draft pick improvement for minority hires.

Joe Douglas was a big name brought in as soon as the other football guy was gone. Giving the impression that they always needed a football guy holding Howies hand.

Weidl was not in that same stratosphere of fanfare behind his name. And they didnt bring another guy like Joe Douglas in from the outside this time, finally. And, Weidl has now been under Howie for 4 or 5 years. Hes basically home grown under Howie. Theres no rational way to view him as overseeing Howie, or even his equal. Hes always been under him, and has only grown in to the position he now has. He hasnt been a high profile hire in a prominent position from the outside.

Even if you still call it Weidl's board, his board and his picks will still reflect on Howie more than you could ever pretend all the Joe Douglas picks did.

Joe Douglas sucked and our last 3 sucky drafts are on him. At this point, if Howie's drafts suck, theyre going to be on him.

I think there is a brain trust that is always being fed, like bringing in Washburn last year.

He was here the first few days. Haven’t seen him in a bit.

He and I exchanged a few PMs. He will drop in occasionally.  Matt signed up.  No sign of Veej.  Don’t think D20 made the move either.

next up the nfl will tell teams who they can interview and hire for positions.

Let's talk WR for a second.

This is sort of a philosophical debate as well.  Most of you know that I am not a big supporter of the 12 personnel as a base offense.  The NFL revolves around space these days and a TE instead of a WR is contrary to that trend.

I really would like to see Reagor get a look as the X WR.  Yes, the X WR is on the LOS and is more subject to a DB getting their hands on them.  But, in this league...and with 2 TE's on the field...you really don't need a slower possession WR.  Reagor may be short, but he's not slender or weak.  In fact, he's probably stronger than the vast majority of CBs.  If a team has one stronger/slightly slower CB that they put over the X, they may win a few in press coverage, but what matters is how many they'll get slaughtered on when he slips through deep.  Not to mention, the X typically is a higher volume WR who runs a more complete route tree.  Reagor is a first round pick.  We expect big things.  We drafted him because he can run all the routes and has the quickness to separate underneath too, not just over the top.

Additionally, what's the alternative at X?  Sorry, I think both present and future suck if we are looking to Alshon transitioning to JJAW.  If Reagor mans the X, then look at Z.  Present looks great with Desean/Goodwin's combined availability giving us a reliable threat.  For the future, a couple more years of a potentially resurgent Goodwin plus lottery tickets in the speedy Hightower/Watkins gives reason for hope.  I like that combination of players at Z with Reagor at X a LOT more than Reagor at Z with JJAW at X.

I was the guy harping about beating press coverage as an X, but with two TEs, we can line them both on the LOS and give free releases to both outside receivers. I couldn’t really say how that affects the timing of a route with the QB’s drop back.

Ideally, I think we’d go away from X and Zs. Just move them all over the formation to attack certain matchups and certain statistical trends of that defense (weak vs slots, slow starting right corner, cover 1 man on X down, etc).

This. 👍

People need to calm down with the Rooney rule being the end of civilization talk.  It’s a requirement...for an interview. You could call flava flav and you’re in compliance. It’s hardly the nfl using a heavy hand. I’m no friend of the nfl FO but this is a little out of hand

WTF is going on with NFCE players?

Really don't see there being a season this year...

Stopped reading right here. Let me guess... you want more speed.

Nope.  Was talking about how to utilize what we already have.

Let me guess....he still doesn't like having 12 personnel, and still thinks the Eagles are deliberately running it as a base offense...and then someone will bite and explain that the Eagles don't really run X,Y,Z in the traditional sense.

I think a little too much is being made out of the typical Z, X, Y receivers. NFL offenses are so multiple in their approach to different schemes and formations. Doug does a good job of scheming plays up. He'll find plenty of ways to get Jalen Reagor the ball.

It'll be interesting to see the new wrinkles to the offense next year. Doug has said it'll look different. Scangarello will help install and coach some SF-looking offense. More motion, more roll-outs for Wentz.

I just hope it isn't out of Doug's comfort. While the offense has been stagnant the last couple years, he's a master at his scheme. With a healthy deep threat, even just Torrey Smith, his offenses have been very good. And still productive without any real threat at WR. I'm really curious to see the partially new offense this season.

It comes from playing too much Madden...it also remind me a lot of the antiquated # system that is used in basketball...even HS basketball is moving away from calling out positions as 1,2,3,4,5

What do you mean by deliberately running it as a base offense...

I agree.  I think teams, specifically our Eagles, make too much of it.  The Eagles have pigeon-holed this over the years, not us.

They have to a degree, but you still see a lot of different formations and alignments. Ertz will be out wide with trips on the other side of the formation. Doug exhausts every option to gain an advantage. I just think he's been limited in his weaponry... partly due to his/Howie's own doing.

However, the typical Z, X, Y is still very alive and well. You're only going to have so many plays and formations where you're not using those concepts. If you're running some of the KC stuff, those specific WR positions aren't as important (deep routes, jet sweeps). And a lot of that is used to dictate the defense to play certain coverages, and then take advantage of that with more prototypical west coast designs. In most offenses, typical WCO concepts, there's only so much space on the field. Typically, only one of your WRs really needs to be a speed threat. The others are sort of going to be occupying space and need to have a more physical presence to make tough, contested catches.

Of course, the more speed the better. No one is going to pass on speed.
