Didn't the stinkin' Aints hire the OC from LSU?  I could be misremembering, but that's what I'm thinking right now.

I mentioned this previously on this board, and in the past years ago on the other board.   I'm not sure Howie has ever come out and said it this plainly, but Howie is telling the truth here.

Because we don't need a starting WR. We need a Pro Bowl, game changing WR

Since its guaranteed that if we draft a WR at #21 he will be a game changing Pro Bowler, than I suppose we must take a WR at #21!  Any WR will do.

Saints would be a solid pick for him but if I’m the Saints I’m looking to add speed and/or a north/south runner to pair with Kamara.

LSU hired guys from the Saints to run their offense. The OC is now with the Panthers I think?

By this same logic, there are going to be many starting WR's available in the 2nd round and onwards.  All the scouts are saying this is an all-time deep WR draft.  We won a SB with free agent starting WR's.

So why again do we HAVE to get a WR in the 1st?

Carson Wentz needs weapons.  Schwartz can 'make do' with middle of the road LBs.  The NFL is built around the passing game.  The top WRs are not mid-round guys, but many times 1st and early 2nd round picks (there are a few exceptions).

Look at the salary structures of WRs and compare it to LBs and you can see which one matters more... its not even close.  11 WRs average more than $15M/year.  2 LBs average more than $15M.

32 WRs make $9M/year average
18 LBs make $9M/year average

NFL offenses line up 3 WRs far more often than they line up 3 LBs.  And the NFL is moving more and more to more WRs and fewer LBs.  4 WRs happen quite often.  4 LBs is a very rare sight.

I never said we 'had' to go WR in the 1st.  I just said that WR makes a whole lot more sense than LB.  They could do it.  But it would fly in the face of everything that we've seen from this organization over the past 40 years.   Stranger things have happened though.  Once upon a time the Raiders took a Punter in the first round.  And then later, the Raiders took a PK in the first round too.  So... you never know.

But, tell me how getting Murray and Gabriel Davis is a better outcome for this team than Reagor and Logan Wilson.

When it's all over if we miss out on a deep threat WR, I'm down to sign Ted Ginn if he comes cheap.  Could be a decent backup for DeSean as our deep threat.

Question- do generals these days travel with mistresses?

Isn’t that what Petraeus scandal was about?

I’m still putting edge rusher ahead of LB for need concerns based on position value

I think it's more to do with the idea that not every one of the top rated WR's will be on the Eagles board.  I would think they have them ranked and do not assume they could just get "the next one down" and all will be fine and dandy.

Yea, I think clearly they have specific targets among those top 10 WR's, and you are risking losing out on all of them if you are afraid of over-drafting at the end of the 1st.

Bogus comparison since Gabriel Davis is projected as a 4th rounder.

More realistic comparison: Kenneth Murray + K.J. Hamler vs. Jalen Reagor + Logan Wilson.

I'll choose Door number 1.

If we don’t get a WR round 1 somehow, I’ll be onboard to trade for a WR. This is going to be a weird offseason with maybe a couple weeks of camp

Reagor. The Eagles really are in weird spot of the draft.

Thank you for sharing your wisdom. i am in agreement with the thinking and I understand Reid's tree. The only issue for me is most of the tree would mean either drafting for depth (DE, OT,DT,CB we need a starter imo) or we would be drafting into a position already carrying a big chunk of salary. I don't see them as options this year.

So we are back to WR and the rightful play sees a trade back...I agree tomorrow is going to be fun.

I agree with you.   Based on the current roster construction adding at the "core" positions would not seem to make sense.

I think the Eagles need a rookie impact Starter in Round 1 this year.   That is never easy or guaranteed regardless of the position.   The odds against it seem even higher at the WR position.   We just have to hope whoever the Eagles target at WR they make the right choice(s).

Unfortunately the Eagles recent WR draft history makes it difficult to assume anything.

You didn't give an explanation.... and you brought in the smallest guy you could find in Hamler.    Gabriel Davis is a 3rd round target of mine, as is Logan Wilson.

Personally, I'd rather have Reagor AND Hamler and take Bailey, Strnad or Brown later.

For sure.  People are so fixated on drafting a WR.  You can always swing a trade for one later on.  Like when we traded for Donte Stallworth in 2006.

This obsession for a WR is reminding me of the obsession for Ricky Williams back in 1999.

The defense is constructed (as are most other 4-3 D's) to be built around the DL and the cover guys.  This D, in particular, heavily prioritizes elite interior DL talent paired with a contain emphasis from the DE's.  That means the LBs are kept very, very clean.  Schwartz also has a safety at the LOS on every play.

So we don't ask much of the 2 LB's in the base defense.  Keep the play in front and tackle well.  They don't need to be explosive athletes blitzing.  The don't need to be strong like Trotter to engage OL.  They don't need to cover like Carlos Emmons...although that is the one aspect that Schwartz does emphasize from his LBs.

I knew there was some kind of connection.  Thanks.  Panthers, huh?  Eh, not currently worried about it.

I don’t think it’s anywhere near that. The priority needs to be getting wentz weapons, weapons that get open.

Quick, if you're into CBT, tune into ESPN.

So who is everyone’s realistic nightmare pick for the first round? I’m going Yeuter Gross Matos

Our safeties are suspect with the loss of Jenkins and how Mills hasn't started there before.  Plus the fact we have had to keep one in the box is a major reason why we got torched for air yards last year.

The scheme can be adapted to the talent.  A three down sideline to sideline stud LB who can blitz and cover would be a major upgrade.

Yeah... that sure worked out well.  1 year of that guy and then he left... and we were in the same predicament in 2007 as they were in 2006 before they traded for him.  It wasn't until 2008 and 2009 when they drafted Jackson and Maclin that things turned around at the WR position.

How has the WR position worked out for us in each of the last 2 years?  Duce Staley had 1,500 yards of offense as a 2nd year player in 1998.

There is no comparison between the current WR need and the RB need in 1999.

He’d be bittersweet for me. He underachieved at PSU but the upside is there to be a pro bowler. He’s got Carlos Dunlap/JPP upside. Just don’t always see the mental switch come on.

No one has argued that it's not.
