EMB Blog: Once AGAIN. Politics to CVON!!!!!

I'm not denying any of that.  Somehow wanting to not reach for a WR at #21 if the value isn't there has become an extreme opinion among the fanbase.  It's amazing.

So we both go back long enough on the EMB to agree that we don't want the Eagles "reaching" for need at WR.

All we have to do is look at the Eagles 2011 Draft to understand what a disaster reaching for need usually turns out to be.

Or even for those fans old enough to remember the Jerome McDougle pick in 2003, Andy traded up for McDougle after a "run" on DL started and he wanted to try and make sure he got one of them.   McDougle was the 8th Defensive Lineman selected in the Top 15 picks.

So I definitely share that concern as well in general and in principle.

However in this specific draft there are a bunch of WR's that appear to be universally ranked in the Top 45-50 players.    There are the Top 4 wide receivers who are ranked in the Top 20, and then another 3-4 guys ranked between #25 and #35 (depending on the ranking).    Now I am not saying these rankings are some kind of Bible that must be adhered to at all costs.

I'm just saying that taking a guy like maybe Brandon Aiyuk at #21 (if the Top 4 guys are gone) might be a slight reach, but not by that much.    It's also taking a player to address the biggest hole on the roster.

And to be clear, I haven't mentioned any WR that "I want."    Personally I suck at WR evaluations and have been wrong so many times over the years about the WR's I like, I now try to avoid throwing out specific names.    I just know the Eagles desperately need a stud WR (or two).   If they aren't going to pay $60+ Million for one in Free Agency (assuming one even became available and then also wanted to sign with the Eagles), they are going to need to do it in the Draft.

It's been 12 and 11 years respectively since the Desean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin selections.    Maclin was 19th overall, Desean was 49th overall.   And the NFL has changed since Desean went 49th overall, in this draft he would have probably gone about where Henry Ruggs is going to get drafted (Top 20).

I just want the Eagles to (for once in over a decade) properly evaluate the WR(s) they like the best and then do what's necessary to get one or more of them.

So I don't care who the "name" is they select at WR.   It just has to end up being the right pick.    And the first WR they select in this draft probably needs to happen somewhere between #13 and #35.

I mentioned this previously on this board, and in the past years ago on the other board.   I'm not sure Howie has ever come out and said it this plainly, but Howie is telling the truth here.

It would kinda blow if we have to wait 2+ hours to get to 21 and they end up trading the pick.

When I used to live out in Phoenix, I went to a draft party at a friends house and we watched from out in the back patio. It was the ‘07 draft and the player I wanted us to draft most was Paul Posluszny.

I think we had the 26th pick that year, so I’m just watching and drinking beers. By the time our pick rolled around I had probably 8 beers in me and it was getting close to 100 degrees outside. Posluszny is still on the board and I’m thinking we’re going to get him. NOPE! Trade back with Dallas of all teams.

So I’m pissed, a little drunk, and I a lot of hot/sunburnt. I keep drinking, get more drunk, more sunburned, and more dehydrated. Second round starts and Posluszny is still available so I start to feel optimistic again. But the Bills draft him 2 picks a head of us. So I’m pissed again, and I’m thinking the Birds better make a really good pick here. NOPE! Kevin Kolb. I lost it, worst draft experience of my life.

Jerry Jeudy is worth it at #21, even with bad knees due to the upside. If he hits, we have a potential top 5 WR. At worst, he's a slot WR due to his route-running.

Crazylegs, those knees are fine which means he won’t be there at 21 but nice try by whoever

My Dream scenario: Jeudy falling to us at 21

Next Best:  Trade down late in Rd 1 and draft Reagor

I see Aiyuk and Mims as players that could thrive, but need a bit more coaching than Reagor. That's why I hesitate with them. Eagles draft record coaching up WR is bleep-worthy. TBH I prefer Murray or Queen over Jefferson. Think they can be difference makers and give defenses someone to account for every snap. At the bottom third of the first round, I'd argue positional value is there for an every down, high ceiling LB. So if the Eagles stay put or trade back a little those are my preferences - Jeudy, Reagor, Queen or Murray. You all can now mark it down, as none of those 4 will be Eagles after tonight.

They will still need one in the draft regardless. You can bring Corey back as competition only.

Hey, I just Liked the last 4 posts.

Did @VaBeach_Eagle or @Moderator12 fix somethin????

Likes are on a rolling 24 hour clock and you can use 100 in that time frame.

For example, at 8:00 am you use 25 and then between noon and 3 pm you use your other 75.  You wont be able to make any more likes until 8:00 am the next day.  And when 8:00 hits, you will only have 25 to give since the other 75 are counted toward the noon-3pm period the previous day.

Jackson was obviously a great pick.  He'd have been worth the pick high into round 1.

But the fact that they drafted Trevor Laws ahead of Desean shows that AR still had no idea what he might have in Desean.

I'm going to speculate here...Desean was really the first WR that AR drafted as a hit.  He drafted Trevor FREAKING Laws first.  AR had NO CLUE how to draft WRs.  Desean was drafted immediately following the Greg Lewis/Reno Mahe punt returner fiasco when AR was embarrassed for not putting a punt returner on the roster.  I think AR *reached* for Desean in round 2 because of his punt return ability and had modest expectations for him as a WR.  He got lucky.  When he was a surprise rookie smash hit, AR never looked back.  He traded up for Maclin in round 1 the following year, who was compared to Jackson in college.  He drafted Ty Hill, Chris Conley, Mecole Hardman, signed Watkins...all a common theme here.

As far as I can tell from all the stories told about the Desean Jackson pick, it was Brett Veach who came to Andy and told him to watch this WR kid from California.   There were articles some years ago where Andy told the story of how Veach was constantly nagging Andy about Desean leading into that draft.

Unfortunately Brett Veach might have been that "common thread" and maybe even possibly one of the best pure talent evaluators inside the Nova Care complex over the last 20 years.

Andy was smart enough to take him to KC with him.

Hopefully just Howie kicking the tires.  Wonder if he's trying to unload Dillard for a 1st/2nd after the initial run on tackles.

So if we stay at 21, it would be like 10:15-10:30ish? I would hate to watch sports in the Eastern time zone (I’m central).

I’m not a Dillard lover by any stretch. Complete and total pipe dream scenario. Trade our 1st, 4th, Dillard to either the Browns or Jets for their first. We take Lamb/Ruggs/Jeudy. Then trade a 2 and later pick for Willians.

Problem with trading Dillard is that then you're staring drafting a LT early next year. Basically giving up a 1st round pick + a 5M dead money hit.

I would trade the second rounder for Williams and give him an extension to lock down LT

Who is close to 32. If you're drafting to replace the LT a year early, just like they just did with Peters and Dillard, you're drafting next year. And LT for this team (and most) has been a 1st round position.

It has its moments.  Best experience watching sports I had was in AZ though.  Finished with my work, went to a Sports Bar for happy hour, caught the Phillies at 4 had some dinner, and was back at home at 7 to finish my 'homework'.  Nice break in the middle of the day and by the time I got back to my room, I had energy left to do what needed to be done for the next day, while not slogging through for 12 straight hours.

Would be a good depth guy.  RB4 type role.  He already knows the system, he can catch and he can make plays when needed.  I'm assuming it would be on some sort of vet minimum deal so low-risk, high-reward scenario for the Eagles.

They would still need to go out and get a bigger, north-south type runner though.   If AJ Dillon is available with one of the 4th's, that might be the way to go, imo.  If not, DeeJay Dallas trading back into the 7th round might work too.

Ok,  now do the other probably 20 or so

And every SEC player is such a huge hit.

How many years do you think Trent Williams has left? 4-5? If so I guess I would trade for him. Wouldn’t mind drafting a guy either and bringing back peters too as another option. Again, Dillard had red flags for me right after the draft when the first article I read was about how he really doesn’t like football, there have been plenty of great players who don’t like football, a guy like Curtis Martin comes to mind, but combine that with all the crying stuff and the just overall transparency about how he was struggling with RT, I just think it’s time to cut bait with him and get as much as we can before it gets Wentz seriously hurt.

Edit: the crying actually really bothers me, and I didnt think it would. Like you can cry when your 12 and your older brother is picking on you playing a sport or you get frustrated by losing a lot, I get it understandable. I understand crying after an emotional loss/defeat. What I don’t get is when your almost in your mid 20s and you cry after a couple fights in practice. Just doesn’t seem right for a football player who will be good, more like a player who will be out of the league within a few years

We get screwed on the east coast with prime time sports. It’s the only thing I miss about living in AZ

Total Confessions time:

  1.  Which player that the Eagles took were you MOST disappointed in and were RIGHT?
  2.  Which player did you ABSOLUTELY think the Eagles HAD TO GET, they didn't and he turned out to be a complete BUST?
  3. Which player were you disappointed the Eagles took and were WRONG?

For me:

1. Trevor Laws - waited throughout the entire first round... only to have them grab Trevor Laws with their first pick that year.  (I really wanted Eddie Royal, but we did get Desean Jackson two picks later).

2.  I thought Justin Blackmon was going to be an absolute stud.  Wow, that didn't turn out well, glad the Eagles didn't make that mistake.

3.  I didn't get the Shawn Andrews pick at the time.  It turned out well, until his back and his head went out.

Maybe half of that.  AND... he hasn't played since 2018.  Who knows what he really has left?

1. I actually just mentioned this in an earlier post, Kevin Kolb. QB was not a need at the time and we really needed help on defense. He had some ok games, but I think it’s safe to say he was a bust.

2. Mike Williams out of USC in 2005. I knew we weren’t in position to get him but I thought he was going to be an all pro and the receiver McNabb needed to get over the hump.

3. Dallas Goedert. We just had the best TE in the NFL catching the game winning TD in the Super Bowl, why are we taking a TE with our top pick? He’s shown to be very talented and productive in a short time. He looks like he’s on his way to being in the top 5 discussion for TEs in a few years.
