If Hargrave, Jackson and Cox are as good as we hope, I expect the DEs will be productive due to a collapsed pocket. I could see Graham finish with 8-10 sacks, Barnett with 7-9, Sweat and Avery with a combined 7-8 sacks.

Also with WRs, or at least one of them, being covered for more than .3 seconds should help too.

I mentioned this previously on this board, and in the past years ago on the other board.   I'm not sure Howie has ever come out and said it this plainly, but Howie is telling the truth here.

On the nose.

Can't have one without the other.

I’m excited to see where Avery fits in this defense. According to Caplan, the Eagles fired Daniels as DL coach in part because he wasn’t able to tactically take advantage of matchups. That’s where Jeremiah Washburn comes into play. Supposedly he will spend much of his time as assistant DL coach on the analytical and scouting side on how to attack OLs. We don’t have much speed at DE. What he flashed as a rookie in Cleveland is exciting to think about when paired with the pocket collapsing of Cox/Hargrave and the power rush of Graham.

Josh Sweat ran a 4.53, Avery a 4.6, Miller a 4.69. All had good 10 and 20 yard split times.  Eagles are fast enough at DE.   Barnett is the slowest one.

I don’t really care what their timed speed is. Sweat doesn’t play fast. He’s slow off the ball. Miller, I have no idea, but he’s in a battle just to make the team, let alone actually playing.

Yeah Miller was a wasted pick

I wouldn’t call Miller a wasted pick yet. Even when drafted he was never meant to have meaningful contributions his first year. He’s just a complete unknown right now.

At least one sport could have some solid drama

Avery is the forgotten man.   Hopefully they have a plan.

Too soon.

So no Clowney then?

I wouldn't call any 4th round or later pick 'wasted'.   The hit rate on picks that late is very, very low.    There are examples that have turned into role players, starters, even All-Pros, but that rate isn't that high.  Mostly they are the ST and deep depth on a roster, until they can be replaced with another lottery pick.    MIller was the last pick of the 4th round (#138)... essentially a 5th round pick.

I'm curious... for those that want to call Miller a wasted pick or similar... Who would have been a better pick at that spot, or what would have been a better use of that pick?

One minor quibble: A fourth round pick or later not making it in the league isn’t a wasted a pick. That said, when the pick was obviously a bad pick from the outset, that’s a wasted pick. Pumphrey and Thorson were wastes.

The odd thing about Miller and Daeshon Hall was that both guys had great pre-seasons, and then were essentially put on a shelf for the regular season. I don't see how both guys aren't at least as good as Sweat, who showed a lot less than they did against similar competition.

Avery should also be at least as good as Sweat based on his time in Cleveland.

If Sweat has shown enough to be a rotational defensive end, we should have three other guys at that same level.

Ok.  Granted.  I stand on the statement that Miller was not a wasted pick, even if he washes out... he still wasn't a wasted pick.

Miller was one pick away from being a fifth rounder. He was raw and needed some strength training.  I won’t be surprised at all if he is in the rotation with Sweat with Avery being the pass rush specialist.  Ostman is the wild card.

Yup.  Which I pointed out.  By the standards of old (precomp pick era) he's a mid 5.

Piling on the point: if they fall in love with certain player or certain attributes but with some other deficiencies or faults, and force the pick on that player.  That is a failure waiting to happen.  Your two examples exhibit that trait.

So to play off of my question yesterday, who on the Eagles is likely to regress this year?

Brooks, Kelce, Graham and Desean all have injury and/or age working against them. It could be argued Alshon is already there, so I won’t count him. Any others?

My biggest question mark on defense is Malik Jackson. In 2018, he was benched, apparently due to his poor run defense. In 2019, he suffered a Lisfranc injury and played only one game. Obviously the team is loaded at DT, but you gotta think the Eagles are relying on Jackson to be a major contributor in subpackages.

Got my mortar and pestle today. Tomorrow I clean it and cure it.

The Guga food guy’s video of beer can chicken inspired me to makes use of Giant’s $.99 lb sale on legs and thighs (and allegedly quarters but none at mine. Tomorrow I may try to find at another store for Instant Pot Coq du Vin (JR, I will pm the recipe after I try it to see how it compares the the recipe I use that is 95% Julia Child’s.  Always used fatback but this recipe calls for bacon.  Always used a cut up chicken not just leg quarters but the thighs are the best meat for that.).  I made a garlic butter sauce with some other spices and slow grilled them. Had that for lunch. For supper I have the rubbed and "cured” baby backs smoking away. Damn, this isolating is going to make me fatter.

I watched the Guga videos on dry aging. I have a refrigerator in the basement that always has room for something like that. I needed to get out to the local meat sellers to see what they have.  I plan to start with something already aged some. I have been looking at the bags I need.  Has anybody tried that?

Brooks with the second end of the season injury worries me. Shoulder is nothing to short change on a IOL.

All I know is that if Sweat doesn't pressure Eli on that flea flicker week 14, we don't make the playoffs.

The sad reality of almost all Eagles draft picks.  No intention to have them contribute right away.
