I think this is absolutely ridiculous and getting out of hand, but it’s also not a hill I’m willing to die on.

Do whatever you want.  I don’t care.

I mentioned this previously on this board, and in the past years ago on the other board.   I'm not sure Howie has ever come out and said it this plainly, but Howie is telling the truth here.

Neither are a derogatory term nor do either misappropriate culture and the irish werent victims of genocide by americans so not quite the same.

Now if "americans" had taken the irish settlers killed them put them on reservations and stole their culture for entertainment then you might have a point.

Nah... the Irish had their own issues when they came to this country.   I'll add... if one culture or group of people aren't a 'mascot', then none are.  As someone of Irish descent, I am offended at the 'Irish' Mascot that Notre Dame uses.  Meanwhile, my mother likes it.  My grandfather, who was 100% Irish and was part of a family that came here in the early 1900's, just before he was born here, was just amused at how many of the 'Irish' on the Notre Dame football team weren't Irish by name.  The implication that the Irish are always fighting, goes right along with the idea that they are all drunk.  First, they get drunk, then they get to throwing fists.

The Indians logo is a legit caricature, should have been changed a long time ago.

Chief Wahoo disappeared last year in favor of a blocked C. The Indians realized they had a problem and gradually fixed it.  I always thought they should have a motorcycle as the logo.

Im almost a 3rd irish. Im pretty far removed from that culture but if irish find the fighting irish mascot offensive then their tribe should say so, oh wait they dont have any tribes in america because they arent native to this land.😒 nor were they forced off their native land by americans.

I grew up mormon thats my "culture" if a football team from tennesee owned by governor boggs decided to name themselves the tennesee mormons and use our religious ceremonies and ceremonial clothing as entertainment and our image as a mascot or caricture id have serious issues with that.

Not to mention the name redskins is a derogatory term with racist under tones.

I learned how to ride a motorcycle on a 50cc indian.

And Vikings didn’t wear horned helmets.  As a person that is 50% Of Norwegian descent and 1/8 Swedish and my Irish ancestors were Doyles, who were Vikings that stayed in Ireland(you might have heard of Doylestown, my ancestors, primarily a cousin’s tavern), I don’t have any issue with the Minnesota mascot except for those silly horns.

Am I defending the name "Redskins"?   Have you ever seen me reference that team on here?   I refer to them as 'Washington' or 'the Washington team', and have for years.

So, don't read what you think I said.  Read what I did say.

I didn't know that.   That's a cool thing to know.

You compared redskins name to celtics or fighting irish, which i dont think is a fair comparison.

Thats what i read and responded to.

Well I think the Philadelphia Eagles are safe.

Is there anything possible that people could find offensive with the name Eagles?

How did the name Eagles come about anyway. Im sure someone on here knows the history?

No, I didn't.   That's what you interpreted my comment to mean.  But, I guess that's the world we live in now.  What I said, was to wake me when Notre Dame's name is up for discussion.  I've been against the term "Redskins" for a long time, and haven't used it until this conversation with you.  But, the truth is that there won't be a change to Notre Dame's mascot, even though it is equally 'characturish' as the "Chief Wahoo" used by the Cleveland Indians.  And it implies that the Irish are small, drunk, and pugilistic.

1933 - Eagle was the symbol of the New Deal.  Prior to that, the Eagles were the Frankford Yellowjackets, but Bert Bell wanted a larger draw, and to be connected to the entire city of Philadelphia (which is why the original colors were that gross blue and yellow), because those are the colors of the city flag.

The eagle represents freedom. Relevant to philadelphia's place in american history.

Interesting fact.  After the Scandinavians, who definitely had contact with Native Americans and other northern dwellers, there is a likelihood that the Irish knew of America before Columbus.   We know they made it to Iceland and there is some suggestion they were fishing the North Atlantic all the way to off the coast of North America chasing the cod.

You commented in response to the redskins discussion was to wake you when we start talking about celtics, fighting irish.

How should i take that differently than as a comparison?

While the fighting irish mascot may be a cartoon in my opinion its still not the same because it was a caricature formed by white irish men.

It would be more offensive if it was a native american school on tribal lands formed by native americans who decided to use the fighting irish as a mascot of a people they conquered through genocide and stole their land.

Having said that i agree it paints a sterei type of drunk small fighting irish which is no bueno.

Also whats philadelphias historical relevance to the new deal. Was fdr from philly or was the owner of the eagles a fan of the new deal?

Could be.it was New Sweden originally.

I'm not going to continue to discuss this with you, because you continue to make this comparison.  I never did.  The point was that Notre Dame's mascot won't be touched.   It wasn't 'formed by white irish men'.  It was the work of a single American Cartoonist - Ted Drake.  But, hey, at least they removed the whiskey bottle from being around his foot.

I'm not defending "Redskins", "Indians", "Braves", "Chiefs", or even "Seminoles".   I merely said to wake me when Notre Dame and Celtics are up for discussion.  (aka, it never will happen.)

None.   It was a marketing ploy by Bert Bell to choose a logo/mascot/symbol that would bring in more fans.  The Blue Eagle of the NRA was big in the news... so they went with it... and it fits well with the Eagle as the symbol of America, in the birthplace of America - Philadelphia.  And yes, I am taking that title from Boston.  They were not the birthplace.

Don't put that challenge out there right now.  Someone will find a way to be offended by it.  The bald eagle is the bird of the United States and the United States is a systematically racist country born from racism deep in our founding fathers, therefore the bald eagle is racist.  Eagles must be changed.

Either that or PETA.

How dumb is it to shoot off fireworks in a National Park that is primarily conifer forest (Ponderosa pine) and historically very dry in July and currently in a moderate drought.  Hoping that nothing catches fire. Anyone out there shooting off fireworks should be cognizant of the fire risk.
