I get that we're all different, but what I've struggled with my whole life is why hate someone just because of their ethnic background. I really thought that we had come a long ways as a society from racism as it was when I was a kid. We don't have some of the exclusions we did back then, but it seems under the surface there is still a lot of hate by everyone.

I think the reality is that people are prone to generalize based on their experience. Some of those generalizations lead to prejudice.  Sometime that prejudice leaves people with an inability to empathize with others based on their prejudice.

I mentioned this previously on this board, and in the past years ago on the other board.   I'm not sure Howie has ever come out and said it this plainly, but Howie is telling the truth here.

The problem isn't emboldening, the problem is having the hatred to begin with. Government  leaders are not at fault in this particular issue................................we the people are.

I think it’s hatred. We also have a lot of people who don’t give a crap about anything that doesn’t effect their small bubble. It’s why you heard during the protests and during this desean thing so many people on social media were like I don’t care can we stop talking about it. It’s cause it didn’t effect their bubble except they couldn’t talk about sports or other things they wanted too.

Do it, just don't share it.   Like I said... the social media thing is hurting them right now more than its helping.

Maybe they can add a new feature to social media accounts where you have to score higher than a 20 on the wonderlick to post.

Another non-sequitur.

Earlier today, I was watching the last two minutes of the Eagles-Packers regular season game from 2003. That's the one where the Eagles drove the length of the field in the last two minutes for the go-ahead touchdown reception in the front of the endzone by Todd Pinkston, and then recovered a Brett Favre fumble with one second left. Madden and Michaels said some things during that go-ahead drive that I thought were incredibly stupid.

The Eagles were down by four at the time, 14-10, and had one timeout. When the got the ball to about the forty five yard line after a run by Duce Staley picked up a first down, they were clamoring for the Eagles to spike the ball. There was about 1:40 left on the clock at the time. On the very next play, a pass to Staley takes them to the thirty-two, earning another first down. The clock is still ticking at about 1:20, and they're still screaming for them to spike the ball to stop the clock.

What the hell is wrong with them? You need to score a touchdown to win the game, and if you do score, you'd like it to be with very little time left. So you're not really looking to stop the clock at that point. After all, you're going to be able to stop it through the natural course of play. And you sure as hell don't want to be giving away a down like that by spiking the ball. You only have four downs to move ten yards. It's absurd to willingly reduce that to only three downs when you still have more than a minute left.

I think announcers have gotten better over the years at recognizing the concept that you don't need to rush to score in the last two minutes, provided that you're still moving the ball effectively. Timeouts can actually help the defense in that situation. We've seen guys like Peyton and Brady do masterful things in two minute drills over the years. Those guys seem to recognize that you can milk the clock a bit when you're driving like that.

As much as I liked Madden (and to a lesser extent Michaels), they really missed the boat on this one. It was kind of painful to listen to.

This is why i posted a couple weeks back The story about my great grandma who survived the holocaust. The jist of the story was she always told me never hate someone just because a group of people was hateful in the past. Like she got out of the Holocaust and easily could have been angry at the people of Poland and Germany for standing by knowing what was happening and doing nothing as she saw family members and friends murdered. But if you hold onto that hate and let it fester and it gets passed down from generation to generation then it breeds more hate and you make yourself as bad as those who wronged you originally. It’s so much easy to teach and work together to educate why that can’t happen again and why people would be upset and have that pain.

The key is to get inside the 20 with 30 seconds and a timeout left - because once you're that close you can easily throw the ball out of the end zone to stop the clock and that play will only take a few seconds, and you're close enough you don't have to worry about getting a 1st down.

So you're right, it makes no sense to waste a down between the 20s when you need to get a lot of yardage, makes more sense to use a timeout there.

The thing that these commentators say is usually very stupid.  If the clock is running under 2 minutes... they want it stopped, because that's all they know to say.   The truth is, in the situation you described, the goal is to score a TD with as little time left on the clock as possible.  The clock is as much an ally for the team that's trailing in that situation as it is for the defense.   The defense really needs to get the stop.  The offense needs to not let them stop them.   And giving up the down is more dangerous to the offense than the 10-15 seconds that they might save.

No, you shouldn't share with me if I don't invite you to - this is why I hate religious fundamentalists of all stripes - because they think they have sole possession of the TRUTH, they don't feel obligated to observe social boundaries. My "soul" is my business, not yours.

I have people proselytize me my whole life, and yes, I resent it. It's impolite. Bad manners - and manners are the key to civilization.

I married into an Evangelical Christian family (my wife had fled to the People's Republic of Austin), they made a couple attempts, after I politely rebuffed them it stopped.

I don't question their beliefs and made it clear that mine were none of their business.

What would you call it when a self described "better than pre-med science major from Penn” volunteers lectures about genetics on the board and offers definitive, matter of fact solutions on healthcare problems?

I guess presumptuous and proselytizing  don’t apply?

Ah, we aren’t all so different.

Yup people are accountable for their actions and thoughts and as i said government people who embolden those ignorant thoughts arent helping.

Wow, now is that so hard if someone tries to talk to you about it?  Nah. I have people of other faiths that want to talk about it, if I'm not interested I just say no thanks. Now if you said no thanks and they still kept on then yes I would agree with you that's bad manners. Other than that conversation is conversation.

The second part was more so Geoff Schwartz's experiences that he gave. Video below for context starting at 11:20.

The Jackson Two need to understand that their platform cannot be taken for granted and they are accountable for what they post or like as everyone else is. Chris Long's point is very wise, but it will get lost in the mire.

I do think NFL players need to open their minds to how other sports are performing in the world. While the amount of humans involved is not at the scale of the NFL, the level of precautions should be reassuring as a baseline.  And the sporting interactions on the field haven't changed at all.  If a football player earning $1200 a week can play and put their livelihood in danger, a multi millionaire NFL player can.

@BigEFly My copy of 1491 just arrived.  Looking forward to it. And in my limited literary world, this book is short - only about 400 pages, not counting footnotes and index. In between tomes I'll revisit a Spenser novel or Travis McGee. Met John D. MacDonald once, almost half a century ago. Delightful and unpretentious. Wanted to talk about me. I asked him where he got his characters and he said, "Doing this."

Just my take on things: There will be no professional or collegiate sports in the fall. Barring a miracle, many states will revert to phase 1 type lockdowns, and education will be virtual.

But schools must be open in the fall.

I think you will see a lot of trying and a lot of inevitable failing. We are in way too deep and way too dumb to start making sense.

Drew Brees said something dumb - get over it

Desean Jackson said something real dumb - get over it

Are we really just going to keep dwelling on every offensive thing athletes say?! You don’t know them, they certainly don’t know you... so who cares.

There are two ways to fix the NFL problem.

Scenario 1

Players are secluded in a few time share resorts with their families in central Florida. With all the money the NFL has and plans to make that shouldn't be an issue.

All games are played in the Bucs stadium, South Florida, UCF, Florida and Jacksonville aren't too far away either.

Scenario 2

All teams are secluded in hotels/condos/whatever in their cities with their families

They charter their own flights and don't have any fan interaction

All meals, entertainment, and private tutors are provided, so there is no reason to leave. If their families want to stay home then they can see their husbands 4 or 5 months later. Nothing worse than military families go through. They can suck it the heck up for what they get paid.

Problem solved.

Drew Brees said something (that a large percentage of the population agrees with) and vocal part of society verbally crucified him.

Desean Jackson said something (that a overwhelming majority of the population rejects as bigotry) and it's deafening silence from the individuals who berated Brees.
