August 7, 20214 yr He apparently ghosted the Saints for three months after being encouraged to have surgery. He decided to rehab instead and then showed up in June saying his ankle wasn’t better.

Isn't that what Lane did last year? I get surgery for players is kind of scary but the benefits outweigh waiting and trying to let things heal on its own

It’s funny how he hasn’t even been named the starter yet. Get ready for a long season. I’m expecting 4-5 wins. There isn’t anything ‘funny’ about it; both Nick and Howie have said repeatedly they want Hurts to take the job and run with it, so to speak. They want him to earn it rather than be gifted the starting job (even though, face it, he HAS been gifted the starting job because of how events have played out). The question is not whether Hurts will be the starter Week 1; the question is how long will he keep the job. If you see a healthy Hurts sat down at any point during the season for Flacco or Mullens then you know what the direction of the organization will be for 2022 and after.

They didn't set this team up to sit him, so he will play as long as he is upright and not injured badly. They basically plugged two scrubs in and decided to compete for the 1st pick in the draft.
August 7, 20214 yr I recall someone somewhere saying that one of the reasons the D can over perform in camp relative to their season performance, is they know the tendencies of the O, so have a big head start as camp progresses. I am not excusing the O performance in the slightest, but the real read will come in the shared practices. The O also need to get healthy in some areas too
August 7, 20214 yr If Hurts was struggling but the offense doing better with Flacco and/or Mullens then I'd pin this more on Hurts. My concern right now is with Sirianni and his "offense". He' never called plays. His OC was not well liked at all by Chargers fans and was seen as an issue for them that they were glad to see leave. Sucks that we won't even get a real view of what this offense will be during pre-season and we have to wait until the regular season though. But it's disapointing to hear so far with the young talent that is there on offense.
August 7, 20214 yr Defenses are almost always way ahead of offenses at the beginning of camp. It takes a while for the offense to become a cohesive unit. Timing takes some work. That doesn't mean we shouldn't be concerned about the offense... because we should - but that shouldn't really surprise anyone. Hurts isn't an NFL passer and he has no WRs to throw to. And both your starting guards are out. And LT is a major question to me still.

The O also need to get healthy in some areas too That makes sense in the beginning but on the same hand this is day 10? of the O going against the same D everyday. They should be becoming more even by now and picking up the tendencies of the D. It doesn’t bode well for when they are facing a new D every week in a month.

But if the O are working on certain things, say 3rd down, there is only so much variety that can be there from the coaches. The D have a step up and the O are required to execute flawlessly. For example, if Sweat knows Johnson's tendencies, he has an advantage. Let's see how it goes when there is another face across the LOS.
August 7, 20214 yr Also, Hightower picking up a week to week injury is bad news for him. He has made some plays recently but overall it seems he had a meh camp. If he can’t make it back for these upcoming joint practices and preseason games, it doesn’t look good for him making the team.

Yup, I like Hightower but no one is going to hold a job for the #168 pick who caught 10 passes in 29 targets last season. If he can’t claim a job in training camp other players will pass him by
August 7, 20214 yr People are getting down right silly. One practice, folks, one practice. There's a month until the season starts, at this point in camp they're trying to teach a new system and evaluate 90 players. The exhibition games will be a better read, but defenses will play simplified schemes, and the offense will be learning from playing actual games. How often have we seen an offense look good in camp then fall flat on its face when the real games started, and visa versa? As far as the talent level, I think you have to remember that players tend to make their big jumps in year 2/year 3, so don't assume that players who struggled as rookies or 2nd year players won't develop - which ones will is the $64K question. Fulgham for example, is he the guy who was waived, and then demoted or the guy who was the best WR in the NFL for 5 games? Jackson was a roster long shot who is starting to look like a player you have to make a roster spot, maybe next year he's #2 pushing for #1 PT? And so on.

The question is whether another team will sign him when he is cut or will the Eagles be able to sign him to the practice squad? I think of him as as a Sheldon Gibson level WR but he is a slightly more accomplished one. Gibson was re-signed by other teams but only to the practice squad. I think there is a chance another team signs him to the bottom of their 53 man roster just for the fact of his two 50+ or 60+ or whatever they were receptions last season (that he actually caught instead of dropping). But I believe that chance is low. There is no question though that they should not waste a 53 man roster spot on him. Smith, Reagor, Fulgham, Watkins & Ward is all who they should go with at WR. Especially when they will likely have to keep 4 TEs as Howie tries to do whatever he is doing with Ertz and keep him on the roster they will need to also keep that Jackson converted QB to TE that is looking very promising.

August 7, 20214 yr The 2020 HOF class is being inducted live on nfl network as we speak. Troy Polamalu got his gold jacket a few minutes ago and it was a nice moment as it seemed to mean a lot to him.

That's more than enough space to make room for a player with a cap hit like Zach Ertz. If/when Ertz is ever traded I think it will be to Buffalo.
