I love the result of the Super Bowl but I think the cause is misplaced at times and resulted in misjudgment as to what came after.  First Wentz as potential MVP.   It looks like it went to his head and he flatlined, help regressed, as to improvement. Same might be said for Ertz.  Jenkins overvalued his role.  Schwartz hardly stopped anything.  Doug was the result of collaboration and we undervalued Flip and Reich. Peters was actually out.  We undervalue Chris Long’s locker room presence and Nick Foles relationship with other players.

Lurie, I like as an owner.  Howie lucked out with a couple key FAs but has failed in development of the roster since.  Team cores are built in the first two days of the draft and there he has failed.  Not hate but fact. Pederson was less than Pederson plus Reich plus Flip.  Just the way it is.  No hate.  Schwartz failed to develop his defense and it got a bit predictable.  Since he stepped away, I wonder if he burned out.  Of course, it might be Howie’s failure to deliver any real youth on the defense.

Despite the flaws, Lane Johnson, Chris Long and those dog masks pulled the team together for an awesome series.

Just some random comments for people who didn't watch the game and have no intention to do so. I find myself being more annoyed at the result of the game than I probably should. It's ridiculous t

I wish we would have re-signed Rasul when he was cut by the Raiders.  He is so much better than our current depth players and may have made an impact with Gannon's scheme.

I know that I am days late on this.

I don't think he is. He's limited. I'd rather see if we can uncover a diamond in the rough than take a re-tread like Rasul.

Are you basing his limitations on Schwartz not using him correctly ??

Moreso on him now being on his 4th team in as many years.

Yeah, ditto...

Beware of what you wish for, Howie's managed to have this team somewhere between 10-12th over the last five years, before that it's hard to know, the Dream Team was probably more about AR getting desperate to get over the top, AR basically backed Howie as his "puppet." Howie really never had control until 2016, maybe 2012 after the Dream Team collapsed. You can do a lot worse, since over half the NFL have over an extended period.

That's called NFL purgatory.  Being at the top of the middle third of the league isn't a good place to be for a long time.  You need to either be ascending to the top, or coming back down from it.  Putting on the brakes and just sitting there is futility.  Not good enough to have a legit shot, and not bad enough to get the difference maker needed to get the legit shot.  Definition of mediocrity.

I really like this post because it speaks to my heart. After years and years and years of heartache, we finally win the whole thing, and then a few years later everyone who was involved was just a complete boob who happened to be along for the ride. It's maddening how the negativity just permeates everything around the city.

Well, I think its fair to say that Reich was a huge piece of it, much more than we thought at the time as well.

Rasul Douglas is probably on a slow path out of the league...  he's now on his 4th team in 5 years; not a good sign...  he very much looks the part, but doesn't very consistently play the part...

Attributing it as a failure of Jim Schwartz (who I was not a fan of) seems misplaced... if he had left here, and then settled down with a team and played decently, then fine, you might point to Schwartz...

Yup. People hate Ertz, Wentz, Doug, Howie, Lurie, Peters, Jenkins, Schwartz. It goes on and on. Stay long enough in Philly and you eventually become a villain.

I couldn’t possibly have any ill will toward any Super Bowl contributor. It was easily the happiest sports moment of my life.

No ill will from me.  Time to move on though.  Trying to 'keep the band together' rarely results in a repeat.  They tried, they failed.  Thanks, but it's time for a shake up now.   No need for them to become villains.

His replacement will probably fail, not might fail. So prepared to go through 2 or 3 and a decade of futility.

If Howie is 10-12th, the nine ahead of him are mostly guys with lifetime tenure and aren't available. Their assistants are, but as Douglas showed, that's not the same.

And you want to hire the guys with worse track records?

Be careful what you wish for, you might get it.

Wow.  This post is just riddled with fear of the unknown.  Nothing great was ever accomplished by someone willing to accept things the way they are for fear of failure to create a change.

I think DeFilippo was a pretty big piece of that too... trying, without succeeding, to replace that triumvirate of Pederson, Reich, and DeFilippo was one reason we didn't maintain the momentum after the Super Bowl, and one of the reasons (along with the injuries) that Wentz began his slide...

@4for4EaglesNest...  sorry you're confused, man...  not had your coffee yet?

Agreed on DeFilippo.  I'm not sure how much they really tried to replace that triumvirate though.  No one came in from the outside within that sphere until last season... and that just looked like a mess of organization.  No real chain of command...

Physical?  Hmmm... I heard it was non-tackling again.   I know you can be physical without tackling, but tackling is kind of important to the game.  Would have been nice for them to have a little practice with that in live action.

I phrased that poorly... was going to be very hard to catch that bit of lightening in a bottle again, is what I meant...

The FO and coaches held on to the players who won the SB way passed their productive time.  Sentiment to reward them for the win and services, which led to the poor showing of ensuing seasons.  Peters was the prime example.

You are right to point out the positive effect of Chris Long.  He was not a home grown long-tenure player and as such did not get the love from the team to keep him around.

On the flip side, the team let Reich and Flip left after SB, whom they should at least try to keep.  The tradition of not blocking coaches advancing their career works in a negative way to the team.

Slightly higher mean... Median firmly at 7... sliding ever closer to 8, but the mode remains 6.

Agreed.   I put a lot of stock in the working relationship between Reich and Pederson, given their long time friendship dating back to when they were players.  There was no ego between them, so they could talk openly and really get the best from each other.   Not sure how DeFilippo worked in that mix, but I think his role was more related to his ability to hold Wentz accountable.  He coached him hard and we all saw the results of that... an MVP-esque season.  Shame that it all came crumbling down so soon.  I think if those 3 had stuck around, there would have been a realistic chance to contend seriously for that back to back.  But, it needed to be blown up after that and get the youth movement going, not bringing in 30+ year olds to extend the window further.

It's fair to say that the Eagles started to majorly sniff themselves after the Super Bowl and they got away from what got them to the Super Bowl by doing it.  The desire to maximise the window of opportunity lead with Wentz in his rookie deal lead to some bad habits/decisions and organisational overreach. What we don't know is if the Eagles will go back to principles on a year by year basis.

The Eagles are capable of getting the team back to where it was, but it has to be as one

This isn't true.  Flip's contract expired and they had already blocked him from the OC job in NY the year before.  So, he wanted to be an OC somewhere.  So, he left for the promotion.  Reich was still here.  But, when that troll in NE decided to back out of his commitment in Indy, that job opened up, and Reich was the premier candidate left to make that move.  He then left as well... and the timing was awful.   That moved Groh from WR coach all the way to OC, instead of just QB coach.  And promoted Taylor from Offensive QC/ass't QB coach to QB coach far sooner than I think he was ready for.  And teams can't block coaches from being interviewed for HC positions.
