Side note.  I REALLY hope the NFL reviews last nights penalties and tells officials to be a little bit less trigger happy.  If that's the direction the NFL is going, and they don't have an issue with it, they are going to lose a lot of fans.  I think a lot of fans are already on the fence because of other things the league is doing but the gameplay keeps people around.  If trash talking is now a penalty, and it's continually called...bye bye NFL.

What's the reaction in here going to be the first time an Eagle is called for taunting?  When there's a facemask, PI, hold, offsides we can clearly say OK that flag was warranted.  When there's a flag called on someone yapping it up how the hell can any of us say OK that's justified.  It's a horrible rule.  It was discussed when it was announced but to call a penalty on a guy taunting, yet be perfectly OK with an entire team sprinting 90 yards to pose in the endzone after a turnover makes ZERO sense.  

That's taunting in my eyes... and players come off the sidelines to do it as well.  Even worse.   And last night I saw a Buc take his helmet off and smash it on the ground after a play.  Sure he was disappointed in himself on that play, but to me, that is over the line as well.  You can show emotion without swinging your helmet around... it has been used as a weapon in the past (i.e. Myles Garrett) and helmets should be ON at all times while a player is on the field, unless its a TV timeout or something like that.  

 

Taunting and hurting a guy's feelings?   Nah.  That's just micromanaging the game.  I mean, there likely is a line that is too far, but I think the league is going way too far with legislating it.   Last night, a guy got a cheap shot after the whistle, it was called, and it seemed he let the defender know about it.   Nothing wrong there.  Granted, I don't know what was said, neither before or after the late hit, but... "sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me..."  Put ear plugs in if you don't want to hear what the opponent has to say.

What happened in the Saints game last year can't be the norm...   In that game, Hurts had the most carries of any player in the game.  18 rushes, compared to 17 completions.  That's not 'NFL' QB play.  I don't consider an occasional keeper as a big deal...  but when it becomes the major part of the offense, that concerns me big time.  

18 rushes for Hurts... 18 for the rest of the team (14 for Sanders, 1 for Reagor and 3 for Scott).    The Saints only had 20 rushes the whole game as a team.  (11 for Kamara, 5 for Hill and 4 for Murray).

I don’t think so. If there was enough contact there to throw the DB off balance, then that would be illegal contact by the DB. I believe the DB was on his heals, which happens as you try to close on the WR but not enough extension for a push off to be called.  Too close to call OPI just like too close to call illegal contact on the DB.  You have to keep in mind how the camera focus and speed was as you were watching the replay.  You couldn’t really see the DB’s feet but the body language suggests they are in front of him, thus on his heels.

I guess the question becomes what's the right number? I'd generally say I'd like to only see a few "designed" QB runs, and more early than late, to get the defense thinking about it. You can use the RPO's later, when the defense is a little more tired, and hopefully catch the DE crashing down on the RB (this also needs our RBs to be able to run up the middle successfully). 

But yes, that Saints game is not what we should be looking for. It will certainly depend on what the defense wants to give you as well. If they play contain with the ends and mush rush with the tackles, then Hurts has to be able to sit in the pocket and make passes. If the d-line is being ultra aggressive and crashing inwards, then I'm OK with a higher number of carries for Hurts. It all comes down to efficiency, ultimately.
