I highly doubt they feature Howard. He was basically a game day decision and he has been wearing extra pads during practice

This.  I don't think Howard gets used too much, and probably like recent games we come out throwing and don't settle into the run until later.

Agreed.  He has ears but does not hear and eyes but does not see.

No Antonio Gibson or Montez Sweat for WFT — and no Chase Young, of course

This game shouldn’t be all that close

Young didn't even play the first time. In the offseason I actually thought they were going to win the division with just the defense

I don't get the viotrol garnered by Hurts around here. He's only 23, he's got barely a year's worth of starts, he's shown significant improvement.

No, he's not a top QB, probably as a passer in the #18-22 range (FO/QBR), which still isn't bad given his inexperience. His running has real value and probably ups his value to around #15.

If he the future? We'll see. If they win today he'll have taken what was expected to be a bad team (pre-season consensus 6-7 wins) to the playoffs and a 9-8 or better record.

Would we like Mahomes, Burrow or Herbert instead? Sure, so would about 28 other teams. "You can't always get what you want . . . "

But do you really think the Eagles would be a better team with Pickett or Strong at QB instead of Hurts? Do you want to spend three years hoping they become as good or better? (Odds are long that neither ends up a top 20 QB).

Do you want to trade 2 1st rd picks for Wilson, fit his cap hit and hope he's not washed up?

Teams have won SBs with QBs worse than Hurts, and he has a chance to get better, while this draft could build a core of a team that can compete for the rest of the decade.

If he doesn't work out, you'll have a team in place that can add a veteran QB in FA, as a prime destination.

Significant? He's shown slight improvement IMO. He's still bailing early

If I was a betting man, I’d put all my money on Washington straight up. There’s no chance we win this game in this situation. I’ve seen this movie before.

Sure... but at the same time, the vast majority of them won't sniff the pros, and they do get remunerated for their play... it's called access to a college education, with free room and board.   Depending on the school, that amounts to well over a quarter of a million dollars or so, for a 5 year stint.  They don't get 'nothing'.  They get an opportunity...

I have both anti player and anti university sentiments on this.

The schools get the profits, not the players.  But there is a reason for that; no one cares about the players.  The NBA's marketability and value are player driven.  In the NFL, the franchises drive it more, but the players a piece of that.  In all NCAA sports, nobody spends money or tunes in for the players.  No one.  They do it for Notre Dame, Alabama, Duke basketball, their alma mater, etc.  So I don't really agree that everyone is making all this money on the backs of the players.  The players just get to have the cameras on them.  They are as replaceable in this cash cow as the students in the marching band on the sidelines.  They get a free education and access to a huge alumni network in the process.

On the other hand, it is a weird inequality that the guys playing the game in this multi-billion dollar industry are making nothing...even if they do amount to mere replaceable stage props.  I think CFB is far too big of a business and is a fundamental distraction from the raison d'être for a university.  I'd love to see universities have to pay/bid for players and throw a wrench into that entire financial model, perhaps making things a bit less profitable for them.

I agree mostly with both of these things. The guys who have no hope of making the nfl do end up with a college degree (or at least have the opportunity to). And for those guys, they can play in as many games they want for as long as they like. A torn ACL or broken ankle won’t affect their degree, generally speaking. But the guys who are going to the NFL have much more to lose and likely most will never put their degree to use.

There’s a huge imbalance in the money the colleges make off of football, and the rewards/opportunities the players are given. The players accept this imbalance and it’s fine. But, if bowl games start to lose their luster (and they already kinda have) then the colleges may have to react if ratings drop and tv dollars dry up, though it wouldn’t occur for awhile.

Which brings to me to e45… and I agree, it’s all about the college and not the individual. But I think college meant a lot more in the 80s/90s, where it was basically equal to the NFL. But I think the pro game has far surpassed college in the last 20 years. If I’m a guy that knows he’s getting drafted, why should I care about a meaningless bowl game when it could cost me millions in the pros?

And so my original point in all this is if college guys want to skip a bowl game, they have every right to protect their best interest. And I think it’s smart to do so. It doesn’t seem like NFL teams care, and until they do, we’ll likely see more and more skip

White Claws are gross

Adam Amin and Mark Schlereth the 2 bozo's doing our game

They need to stop showing Dallas Goedert in the elf costume. It’s nightmare fuel.

I think slight improvement is exactly right.  I also believe Kenny Pickett would be a better NFL QB on Day 1 — not in 3 years.

I think most love the dominate run game other then Lurie/Roseman. Lurie wants a passing offense and Hurts will not be that type of QB to win a shootout with his QB abilities.

I think the problem with Hurts just like many of the college QBs now is they are not taught to read progressions. They snap, target one read and if its not open they take off or get flustered throwing inaccurate throws or forcing a pass. Its the college offense style that is to blame. These new style QBs colleges lean towards are just not NFL QBs.

There are only 2 NFL style (progression read) QBs in this draft worth drafting in Pickett and Strong. Strong I don;t trust his knee, and Pickett will more then likey be out of reach and not worth moving up to get. I don;t see any yet in next years draft either. Hurts more then likey will be the starter in 2022 but its not because of him being the future in Lurie/Roseman's eyes. Its more of a lack of options.

The coach and the center do the work now, Hurts has Jason Kelce set the protection and Siriani gives him the primary receiver on each play.
Imagine telling Dan Marino you gotta throw to Duper here, Clayton there, the variations of the Air Raid in college have completely dumbed down the QB position, starting with the offense itself. It’s nothing more than a stripped down version of the West Coast offense with easier terminology and the offense spread out.
NFL teams want a Mobile QB because if the primary isn’t open, just run. The issue is, if you’re a top 8-10 college program, you already have way more talent than the other colleges, Ohio St and Alabama have NFL WR’s nearly every year, so of course they get open, it doesn’t work that way in the NFL and this rookie QB class is proof.
You gotta love it when fans and analysts use the term "Mesh”, as if it’s some brilliant concept, when "crossing routes” which is what mesh is, were on the 2nd page of the West Coast offense written 40 years ago by Bill Walsh, except "mesh” is supposed to take place, within 5-6 yards of the LOS, is that because Mike Leach decided that WR’s weren’t smart enough to count past 5 or 6?

OT, McNabb is the best QB in Eagles history, but what should make him great among all NFL QB’s, is he’s one of last to learn the West Coast offense in its original form. Considering how much influence that offense had on the league, he should get a lot more credit than he does.

Likely? More like foregone conclusion.

AR coaching tree is a lot like the Belichek coaching tree.  Great coaches themselves but their assistants don’t tend to pan out as HCs. The assistants need to move around to other coaches to get a better feel.  (Rivera and Harbaugh, for example).

Jay Glazer on Fox just said that "Jordan Howard is in, but probably won’t get his normal 30 carries”.  Uhhh…what??

And this MFer is paid to do that for a living!?   JFC.  I guess context matters with that too?

Relax chief, he used a cliche and was imprecise. Glazer is a fine reporter.

takeaway is that Howard likely won’t get many snaps

rivera

mcdermott

childress

harbaugh

pederson

all got their teams to championship games, 3 got to the superbowl 2 won.  belichicks assistants have not even come close to the same success.

I expect WTF to give us as much fight this year as we gave them last year…and I expect us to need their tank as much as they needed our tank last year.

That's why I like Howie picking up a couple extra 5th rd picks and trading Dillard for some more picks.

And why I wouldn't be adverse to trading down/up and targeting some players in the middle rounds.

Not every player you draft has to be a starter, we could use things like a good PR guy, DL depth, OL depth, RBs, possession WR types.

And look at our roster, Kearse (4th), Mailata (7th), Driscoll (4th)/Herbig (UDFA), Gainwell (5th), Watkins (6th), Edwards (UDFA), Avery (T-4th), Epps (SFA).

This is a good draft to build depth up and down the roster for the next few years.

Epps was a 6th of the Vikings.  Avery was a 5th round choice.  Day 3 and 4 (UDFAs) success builds teams.  Eagles have shown good skill there.  If only Howie could learn to win Day 1 and especially Day 2.

Well, here we are.

Just now, 4for4EaglesNest said:

Just what I said.  Most likely won’t be as impactful as he’s been this year.  Or "he’ll be limited”.  Not "his normal 30 carries” line.

Has Howard ever had 30 carries  in a game with us? Has any RB in recent history?
