Do we know if the rate of minorities being hired/promoted increased after the implementation of the Rooney rule? Because if it has gone up, then I'd say it's intended purpose is working, optics be damned.

Edit:

Looked it up, the rule was introduced in 2003, by 2006 minority hires had jumped from 6% up to 22%.

Right now, there are only 3 minority head coaches, same as in 2003.

Yep, it's a joke.

No, it provides minorities a chance to be interviewed, as we saw with Sirianni, get your foot in the door and anything can happen.

Without the rule, people not in the inner circle wouldn't even get the chance to impress, they'd just be ignored.

In another generation, when the "football guys" who come out of the old guard with their implicit racist assumptions (black QBs can't make it in the NFL, etc.) are dead and buried, this will be a moot point.

No team goes searching for a candidate that they think will be mediocre. I fail to see how basing any hiring practice on race benefits an organization. If the best candidates include minorities, they will naturally be considered.

Why isn't anybody in the league doing something to increase diversity in franchise ownership? Sure are a lot of old, white guys there with the occasional widow sprinkled in.

How many minorities have $700M+ in their bank accounts?

No, the rule wastes everyone's time including the person being interviewed. They want the best candidate, they don't care what color he/she is. To say  otherwise in today's NFL is ridiculous.

The rule itself is racist quite honestly.

7 black billionaires in the US as of 2020

Do we need one for players? Not many whites are drafted into the nfl. In fact compared to the over all American population I would say they are wayyyyyy behind the average.

We have a combine designed to put players on a level playing-field. We also have historical playing stats to compare players.

It's significantly harder to do this with coaches, managers, etc.

I want to argue with you, but I think it comes down to owners being really dumb as well. There's no way David Culley was a better option than say, Leftwich, or even Bienemy.

I don't think the owners are purposefully racist, and certainly not all are the same. But it is striking in that with as many minority players that there are, that there isn't more in the coaching ranks.

Offhand, it feels like baseball has more minority coaches, but I'm not certain of that.

The rule is racist by the definition of the word...not sure that can even be debated.  The intentions, success, and justifications for the rule can be debated...and no one will be changing anyone's mind on those.

Oh I didn't realize we didn't just invite the most talented players to the combine (not forcing them to let white folks participate). FYI not everyone is invited to the combine, just like people shouldn't be interviewed for coaching jobs based on the color of their skin (which is racist).

Replace Goodell with one and there will be one in a few years.

Culley is black.

Apparently JJAW has torn ligaments in his ring finger causing it to not extend properly.   Supposedly the injury occurred on the first play (according to his mother), and would account for trying to body catch that deep ball.   He played through the game with that injury, so I guess we should give him some props for that.  But playing when you are not effective isn't really helpful.

Meh. We hear that same song and dance from him or his mom every year. The first year he was so hurt he couldnt pull his pants down to go pee but he played through it. Last year was a calf. Now this. But he somehow is almost always healthy enough to not show up on the injury report with these things.

not sure thats a good parameter to judge by. I mean the % of population that has that amount is low to begin with, then consider a lot of it is wealth that was handed down and built on top of  inheritances.

4500 people world wide with over $500 million in networth. out of say 7.9 Billion people. Thats a very small % of .00000056962%

World wide figures https://www.freightweek.org/index.php/en/latest-news/1726-a-few-fortunes-over-us-500-million

123,800 ultra-high, net worth individuals worldwide, defined as those with a net worth exceeding US$50 million

4,500 have assets above US$500 million

Just asking- what % of minorities WANT to get into coaching? Then break it down Blacks, Hispanics, Asians etc.  I think if we are going to have an actual discussion, then more information is needed.

Woof.

What were they suspended for?

If Harbaugh bolts for the Raiders, I can see Rhule giving the deuces to Carolina and running over to Michigan.
