"I'm not going to speak about the intelligence, but Russia will pay a severe price if they use chemicals," Biden told CNN's Arlette Saenz following remarks announcing further economic moves against Russia. While the US has so far not presented any evidence that Russia plans to use chemical weapons in Ukraine, the White House -- most notably, press secretary Jen Psaki -- has warned that the weapons could be used in the conflict. Radiation, you mean Chernobyl that has the same or more danger for Russia and Belarus than the rest of Europe

NATO territory includes their air space too. A cloud of radiation would be invading their air space. If Russia fires an artillery shell that nocks out electricity to an active Nuclear Reactor, that could lead to a meltdown Fushima style. In which case. the amount of radiation would far exceed Chernobyl. If that were to happen, US/NATO forces will enter Ukraine to kick the Russians out.

All I mean is that even after fighting for themselves and their freedom and after all these people have needlessly died they then sign and lose it all anyway... Ukraine was damned if they did and damned if they didn't... Just a sad situation all around... Just a shame... I feel horrible for them I feel bad for the Russians living under Putin as well

In which case. the amount of radiation would far exceed Chernobyl. If that were to happen, US/NATO forces will enter Ukraine to kick the Russians out. I don't think even that would get us in. It just comes back over and over to the fact that if we get into a hot war with Russia, all of us and everyone we love dies, maybe (maybe) excepting some super-rural people who might be able to provide for themselves and protect themselves. The 500 or so largest urban areas in North America and Europe will all be totally destroyed, and the people who live far enough away not to die in the next few days will have to survive some nasty stuff without any of the infrastructure that they've depended on from the moment their parents conceived them. It's likely that the destabilization in geopolitics would lead to violence all over the world, perhaps involving still more nukes: most people in India and Pakistan would die, most people in the Koreas would die, and so on. So even if Russia nukes Ukraine (which they won't do as long as they want to occupy it and exploit its resources and labor), I don't think we would start shooting Russians. The only way we start shooting Russians is if they attack a NATO ally. That will be a carefully managed boob-for-tat situation and we have to hope it scares the poop out of everyone making the decisions so that the Russians agree not to attack a NATO ally again without escalating further. If it does escalate, and continues to escalate, well, at some point all we will be able to do is try to make our peace with fate. None of us were going to live forever anyway.

March 12, 20223 yr Just talked to my neighbors who came back from a short trip to Poland today. The guy moved to Sweden from Poland when he was two and they have a flat in Gdansk. When they visit Poland they usually take their car and go by ferry from Stockholm to Gdansk. They said the boat today from Gdansk to Stockholm was absolutely full of Ukrainians. We are going to have hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian refugees here soon. My wife and I have started discussing possibly hosting a small family. We have room now with our daughter at university for a few more years. Plus we have a remodeled basement with it's own entrance, full bath, etc and only need to put a small kitchen in to turn it into a garden flat. I'm thinking it would be a small but nice way to help. edit: Ukrainians can travel on the ferry for free which helps those that want to travel from Poland to other countries.
March 12, 20223 yr 10 hours ago, Dave Moss said: You think Ukraine should give up part of its territory just because Russia invaded? You're right. Giving up territory because of an act of aggression by a larger, more powerful nation is wrong. But the bigger, global picture is that the world is a better place if this conflict ceases and cooler heads prevail. Much better place. Both sides need to step back from the brink. As for the basis of a resolution - Crimea is already under Russian control and has been since 2014. Those two eastern provinces in Ukraine are already mostly ethnically Russian. Defacto - already Russian territory. NATO membership for Ukraine? No. Look, it's not fair to Ukrainians, but it's too much of a flash point for the world. Russia is still a very powerful nation who hasn't unleased the full extent of her capabilities in Ukraine. It's a country that has seen terrible invasions from the West. Geographically, ethnically, and historically, Russia views Ukraine as a front line bulwark or buffer against hostile neighbors to the West. Trying to flip Ukraine to NATO seems like a great strategic coup for the West, but I don't want to find out whether or not it was worth the cost. I just want the price of gas and food to come down and things to settle down.

My mother-in-law and her family (sister/parents) fled from Latvia in the middle of the night in a small fishing boat across the Baltic Sea over to the Swedish Island of Gotland in 1944 as Stalin was on his way back into Latvia.
