The exchange would be for a combo of peace and military guarantees. He’s in a tough spot with Trump as POTUS just as you point out. On the other hand his country is suffering tremendously.

He is too dumb to even understand foreign policy.Worst part of it all is that the current administration and some of their sycophantic supporters have forgotten what America stands for, especially when it comes to right and wrong. The Russian takeover of those territories is one thing, but to now recognize them as officially Russian is something else. That’s just wrong on so many levels and has not been the US policy since WWII. This will open the flood gates for other nations that are stronger to just walk right in and take what they want from weaker countries. This is ultimately the outcome that some here have feared and it’s becoming more apparent, that there is an alliance with Putin’s Russia on the horizon.Yeah, the 2016 Russia scandal really was a hoax… why would Putin want Trump to be POTUS….🤦🏻♂️

NATO would be even better. That is the price Putin would have to pay. Having said that, it may be impossible with Trump in the WH given that Trump cannot be trusted. The alternative would be to push on and hope for Ukraine to hold the current quagmire until Europe is ready militarily OR until Trump/MAGA are gone. Both of those will take years.

Trump made "real” guarantees he didn’t collude with Russia too. Watch out, because those weren’t just fake guarantees. Effing dope

Effing dopeDude, you rightly pointed that issue (Trump not being able to be trusted) out in the beginning of this back and forth. I not only acknowledged it but also credited you. It is a problem and greatly risks any reasonable way forward at this stage.

He's so used to both sides'ing everything, he literally does it to himself in the very same breath. You can't ever be wrong if you predict each team will win the same game three sentences apart.
August 9Aug 9 This is just gonna kick the can down the road. My worst case scenario is that Russia does this later to Ukraine and/or the Baltics when China makes their move on SE Asia. We’re gonna have our hands full there and we won’t be able to help Europe.

Would it be Cuban crisis redux or WW3 ?

Would it be Cuban crisis redux or WW3 ?Tbh I think it’s gonna be bigger than people realize. I think people think that war in SE Asia will be limited to air and naval combat and Europe would look like Russia slogging their way through Ukraine. The problem with the latter is that Russia wasn’t fully mobilized and they were attacking a very broad front. It would be different if they completely mobilized and struck somewhere more condensed and with less wide open terrain. Russians are idiots, but they quickly adapt. With SE Asia, I don’t get the impression that China is just going to stick with Taiwan. I think maximalist goals are going to be Vietnam and the Philippines. I think their thinking is best case scenario for them is they get a huge chunk of terrain around the busiest shipping lanes in the world (particularly with oil coming from the ME), and worst case scenario they just get Taiwan out of it. I think they’re thinking that if they stretch us enough we won’t be able to completely win and would let them keep Taiwan. They’re probably gonna use Putin’s nuke threats regarding Taiwan. If they got Russia to go off and N Korea to go off at the same time, it would stretch the hell out of western resources. Equipment is different now. You can’t just retool sewing machine factories and Ford to start producing rifles and tanks. Things are more complex. So yeah, I think WW3 is coming based on the moves that are being made, and it’s gonna be 2 fronts (Europe with the Baltics and Ukraine, and Asia with China and NK).

They want Taiwan back because it was part of China until 1949. They would have taken it back 70 years ago if the U.S. hadn’t kept stopping them. The First Straits Taiwan crisis was in 1954 and the Second Taiwan Straits Crisis was in 1958. The U.S. intervened both times. The U.S. also intervened in the Third Taiwan Straits Crisis in the mid 90s and the Fourth Taiwan Straits Crisis in 2022. I forgot Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan caused the fourth one.

It's not out of the realm. They're already having a bunch of incursions into Vietnamese and Philippine territorial waters. We were all spoiled by living in a post WW2 world. Things are different now. It's just a matter of time.
