What that means is that this board is now authorized to 'promote' (for lack of a better word), fanatics.com (they're the official retailer of NFL merchandise). So what that means for the board is, if anyone uses one of the links from the first post and they purchase something, the board will get an 8% 'commission'. Not every item that they sell will result in a commission, but almost everything will. So, if someone buys a jersey for $250 (using one of those links), the board will get 8%, which is $20. 

Whatever the board makes from the 'affiliate links', will go toward the costs of keeping the board online.

Yeah, I wasn't sure if they'd approve us either but as part of the application (I think it was that one), I pointed out that we went 'live' on April 20th and by the time of the application, we had nearly 1,000 members and almost 30,000 posts. I don't know that that made any difference to them but I'm sure if we had 10 subscribers and 100 posts, they likely wouldn't have approved us lol. 

That reminds me, I also put in for approval from Google Adsense. Their process requires that I insert their code on the site while they determine whether or not to approve the site. I don't intend on having ads for members, if any at all. But I want to get the approval process out of the way.

So if they approve the site and I'm not online, that code would become 'active' and it's possible that ads might show up until I get online and deactivate the code. But once I get online, I'll take care of that and deactivate/remove the ad code.

What do clicks mean?

Clicks pay at a certain rate (determined on a per ad basis, depending on how much the company or individual paid to have their ad displayed). Impressions (ads that just display on the screen but aren't clicked),  pay at a different rate. That rate varies, as well. It could be $0.20 per thousand 'impressions', $0.01 per thousand, or it could be $2 per thousand. 

I'm going to put the rest in a spoiler, it's going to be a long and probably boring post, anyone who's interested can click it open and be bored by it lol

I submitted the site to Adsense on April 29th, and added their code to the board at that time. The board actually keeps track of 'impressions', which is how many times that code was loaded (even though nothing is displayed on the screen). Since the 29th, there have been 19,891 impressions. So that's roughly 20,000 'impressions' in 4 days time, or 5,000 per day (in that small sample size). During the season, you could probably expect that to go higher. But if it averaged 5,000 per day for an entire year, that's almost 2,000,000 'impressions'. 

Looking at my account for the period of April 1, 2019 to April 1, 2020, the average per thousand impressions was $2.21. So if you figure on the above number of 2,000,000 impressions (which might be WILDLY high or WILDLY low, I don't know lol), but using that number and if it earned that $2.21 per 1,000 impressions, that would work out to $4,420 for the year (2,000,000/1000 = 2,000. 2,000 x $2.21 = $4,420). 

Is $2.21 a good number for figuring this on? I'm not sure, but for the previous year (same time frame, 2018 to 2019), it was $2.62 RPM (per 1,000 impressions) and the year before that, $2.60, and the year before that it was $3.14. So $2.21 may be a little low. 

If we do end up displaying ads here, it would only be for 'guests', meaning anyone who isn't logged in. But I would highly discourage everyone (HIGHLY, HIGHLY) from deliberately clicking ads just to  drive revenue to the board. That would actually backfire, by getting the Adsense account voided. That would mean that we'd never be able to have another Adesnse account, and since I'd be using my Adsense account, it would really screw me up. I don't get rich on my account, but a little extra here and there goes a long way.  

As for what clicks are, they are when someone actually 'clicks' on an ad. On that link that you posted, it's really pretty simplified from what reality actually is. $0.20 per click for an entire month just wouldn't happen. You might have one click at $0.20, but another one 3 minutes later could be $1.50 and tomorrow one might be $0.01. It all depends on how much the advertiser has set up his ads to pay out per click. That's one reason Google is really strict with 'fraudulent' clicks. Because an advertiser is paying for each click, and if there's people out there 'fake clicking', then advertisers will lose confidence and won't spend their advertising dollars on ad campaigns through Google. So the instant that Google (who owns Adsense), detects fake clicks, they just ban the Adsense account and ban the owner of it from ever having another account. 

Going back to how much each click might earn, a couple of years ago I had a single click earn $25. Probably what happened was someone paid to have an ad placed and mistakenly set it at $25 per click instead of 2.5 cents each, or even $0.25 each. Their entire ad budget might have been $25 and it all went to me in a single click lol. I'm just guessing on that though. I wasn't complaining lol. 

Anyway, that's my understanding of Adsense, if someone else has a better understanding then they can chime in. But I would re-emphasize, that I would want everyone to just ignore the ads and let that happen 'organically'. I wouldn't want to risk losing the Adsense account (both personally, and for what it could mean for the board).

Yeah, and I looked into that possibility (briefly). I think what I'd have to do, in order to have a different Adsense account, is apply for a tax ID number (that's like a SSN but for businesses). Then open a separate bank account (which I'm going to do anyway). Otherwise, I think you can only have a single Adsense account per SSN (they require a SSN for tax reporting purposes). 

I'm still looking into all of that.

It doesn't matter, as long as you enter their site with our link and buy something, the page that you entered on doesn't matter. But, I've added direct links  for the 76ers, Phillies and Flyers as well as just a general Fanatics link, to the first post. So any of those links will give the board 'credit' for any sales that take place.

After further looking into it, I see that they do allow both a personal and a business account, so I set up a 'business' account and am now in the process of having that set up, and once approved, it won't be linked to my personal account.

Well that's good. It's very unlikely to happen but there was the smallest of chances. At least now you'll never have to worry
