I really think the Cox thing was a behind the scenes hand shake deal. Cox never would have agreed to that restructure without the other part happening. Howie didn't want to take the massive cap hits so this was the only way out.

I agree with that, especially given how quickly they resigned him.   I don't think that they should have brought him back though, once he forced their hand in that manner.

It doesn't mean you should, especially when you are armed with draft picks.

I am not thrilled with the offseason so far either, but that is because I am an impatient fan that wants immediate satisfaction.

This offseason has been fine. If the Eagles were going to make a splash, I think it would have been at QB.

The Cox situation is intriguing. No, he’s not 2018 Fletcher Cox but I’m surprised he re-signed. Some team I’m sure would have given him a bigger, better contract. I’m guessing he has a good season though. 6-8 sacks and maybe gets in the pro bowl. He’ll get a 3 year contract after this year and fade quick. Just my hunch.

The Barnett signing was a 1 year band-aid. I’d bet we still go D-end round 1.

If the Eagles use all 3 1st round picks I’d guess it’s some combo of DE, DT, WR, QB. The back end of the defense will still be plug and play guys. Just my meaningless opinion.

As a player or agent, Im not coming here until Hurts is gone.

Eagles dont seem to be moving on / arent moving on correctly.

Before the draft (if they plan on drafting a qb) is the highest value of Hurts(which isnt crazy high) but we could get something for him today. then sign some free agents knowing we're gonna get a decent QB

But giving up on Hurts AFTER we draft a QB is bad bad news.

Which is why I truly believe Hurts is our guy for AT LEAST 2022 and probably 2023

I think the indication is Hurts is gone after this year. Look how hard they've tried to get another QB in here. No way they sit thru another year (2023) with him again. Frankly I'm hopeful Hurts is gone this year, but doors keep closing.

If they did move Hurts pre-draft, I think that would telegraph that they are taking a QB, and would probably move up to do so. Howie may try to outsmart everybody by drafting one in the first anyway, and then moving Hurts after, even for lesser value.

What indications are those? And have they really tried that hard to get someone else in?

Bacarty summarized it nicely. It started with offers to move up to 2 to get Wilson last year, and then this year Russ, Watson, and numerous draft prospects they've been very interested in. It all points to a distinct lack of faith in Hurts (and rightfully so).

It is hilarious listening to all the locals complaining that Gonzaga got screwed by the refs last night, and I am piling on and really pissing them off.

You can't shoot 37% from the field and expect to win in the tournament.  Teams that shoot less than 40% in the tourney this year have a combined 8-35 record.

I've recently re-upped my subscription to SXM Radio, and what I find interesting is there is no national media discussion at all of the Eagles replacing Hurts.  Most media folks recognize he hasn't shown anything to be the Eagles long term answer at QB, but I've yet to hear any analyst give the opinion that the Eagles are in play to draft a QB in the first round.  I do still hear the occasional question about whether Minshew will move, but never Hurts.  This could play into Howie's hands, as you allude to, and he could swoop in on draft night and grab one.

Personally I believe QBs will go off the board faster than most think, strictly because of the economics of the position.  It's minimum $30M now to get an established starting-caliber NFL QB, while the CBA still mandates what a draft pick QB will get.  It makes financial sense to draft QB even if you only think he might develop.  Hurts is entering Year 3 of his contract and I think this is the last chance to move him for any value, but Howie might believe he's not getting any more than a 4th round pick for him anyway -- so just ride it out for one more year and then make the change.

@EaglePhan1986 you think #16 and #19 would get it done?

I have pretty much lost hope that anything else awesome will happen in this free agency. But that would be awesome. I still want it.

I know a lot of people just want long term solutions and dont care for short term since we have no QB. But I still want to compete. And Mathieu is far from washed. He, along with re-signing our very solid CB2 in Nelson makes the secondary pretty legit.

I'd rather rip the bandaid off now and work on the future. We may squeak into the playoffs because of the expanded wildcard but we're just going to be one and done

Highly debatable.   Is a guy more prone to being penalized than making a positive play for your defense really 'the best' there was?  And if he was... how sad for the league.

Just because a lemon is the best car on the lot, doesn't mean that you have to be first in line to buy it.

The best young EDGE in the FA class was Reddick and we got him. We signed Barnett to be the #4 EDGE. There's a big difference.

Derek Barnett led all DE's last year playing 64% of snaps (second was Sweat at 58%). Even with Graham playing, Barnett was still getting the most snaps out of DE's. Where's this false narrative coming from that now, for some reason, Barnett is playing the "Ryan Kerrigan" role and will be 4th in line? It's a made up assumption to try to stomach the deal.

Gonzaga is like the Dallas Cowboys of ncaa basketball.   Every year you hear about how they're going to win the championship and every year they fall flat on their face.

They got a good team and good coach but they play in a mediocre conference and play for the most part, mediocre teams.  That's why they go 30-3 every year.

I think the hope is that other guys step up and make Barnett the 4th guy in the rotation.   Specifically if they draft a pass rusher or 2, hopefully they can make an impact right away and keep Barnett on the bench.  I think Sweat might be who he is but maybe he takes a leap as well.

Yep, they don't understand it.  They don't understand that with a 28-8 record, the Arkansas team that beat them was the 4th best team in the SEC.

The SEC had 3 top 10 teams in the final coaches poll, and had 6 teams in the tournament.  Arkansas was not at all intimidated by Gonzaga, they played top 10 teams multiple times in their conference this year.

and why a 2-year deal instead of a 1-year deal?  Who were they negotiating against?

I'm with others, where I don't understand why these signings were done now instead of after the draft.  Ward wasn't going anywhere, Scott wasn't going anywhere.  Barnett wasn't going anywhere.  Not sure why the Eagles wouldn't wait to see what talent shakes out elsewhere before going back to re-sign some of these guys.

I think Sweat is always going to be on a pitch count, whether he takes a leap or not. Let's see if they are able to land a pass rusher instead of opting for a Shareef Miller in the 4th round. If anyone is going to be playing the Ryan Kerrigan role, it's Brandon Graham.

Agreed. There was very little sense in this move. There was little sense, and to be honest creativity, in bringing back Ward and Scott. FA is absolutely where you look to plug holes before the draft so you aren't so desperate... But this team made too many average at best moves too early.

He would have been a nice signing to finally solidify our return game.
