Eagles are using nearly 20million of cap space on Cox and Barnett this season voluntarily. In addition to the dead space on Cox old deal. Incompetence is Howie’s brand at this point.

I can't find the terms of Cox's new contract on either Spotrac or Overthecap.  If his contract is tradeable at all, I still see Cox traded during the summer.  If not, then it's a bad deal.

I wouldn't have brought him back at all.

I mean he got 10 million last year right?

Reminder: That's a good time at his weight! Karlaftis is 20 & an above-average athlete. If he's the pick at 15, it makes sense.

I like Wyatt in a top-40 sense, he's a good prospect.  Does he have excellent length like Fletcher Cox or Jeffrey Simmons?  Does he have the quickness of Donald or Ed Oliver?  Christian Wilkins was very productive and a beast against the run.  I don't think he's on the same level as those guys - I still like him, but with Milton/Fletch/Hargrave I think we have the 3T/4i covered.

You may be right.  Just trying to figure out how we improve the pass rush with the 1st round prospects.  I really like Wyatt as a player to take over once Fletcher is done (most likely after this year).

The other player I have come full circle on is Karlaftis.  I just kept on hearing Derek Barnett comparisons from all in here.  I think he is better than Barnett and has more upside.  I love his motor, strength and initial burst.  Honestly, I don't think he makes it to the 15th pick.

So we paid $14M for a run stopper?

Yes, I think with Karlaftis you have ignore the Barnett comparisons.  He has a quick first step, heavy hands and a consistent motor.  He doesn't have that bend that you would like to see at DE.  That being said, I think he could be a productive player in the NFL who gets after the QB and isn't a liability against the run.

Johnson, on the other hand, has speed and bend.  The knock on him though is the inconsistent motor.  He does have more upside as a pass rusher.

The more I get into these DL prospects the more I hope that we find a way to get Devonte Wyatt.  Besides the top 2 DEs, this DE class is pretty meh.  In my opinion, the best chance for the Eagles to improve pass rush (and get an all around player) where they are sitting in the 1st round is to somehow get Wyatt.

I'd take both Wyatt and Davis in the first back to back if they were there

They're both game wreckers and compliment each other well

At least he gets paid to play screens though

Yup, 14 mil for a run stopper who doesn't really want to do the dirty work required of a run stopper.

Bad contract for a declining player, Howie again talking out of his face.

So he pretty much seems like the modern day version of Brandon Graham.

Our defense looks really good in practice going up against Hurts.

I'm pretty optimistic that we will go 3-0 in joint practices this summer

I dunno, we actually practice against a QB when we go to Cleveland

Don’t want

I'll take that over the bust potential of Ojabo and Walker.  A guy who can gets 8 sacks per year, hold the edge and hustle play after play is more enticing to me than the POTENTIAL guys that really haven't performed.  Ojabo had a good season playing opposite of Hutchinson but he literally has no value on 1st and 2nd downs.  Walker can't beat an OT one on one, has no pass rush moves and you pretty much have to run stunts for him to get pressure.  No thanks

Maybe he has his best season and we can trade him at the deadline.

Who were we going to replace Cox and Barnett with THIS season?

You never project rookies, even 1st rd rookies, as starters - they often need half a season to get up to speed.

The Cox dead money is sunk costs, the Cox one year deal is a bridge to next season without a long-term commitment.

Barnett is the third DE this season. He's easily cut next spring or can be brought back at minimal cost for depth.

Next offseason Howie will know what he has, he can make decisions on Cox, Hargrave, Graham and Burnett with a year to evaluate their potential replacements (on the roster and obtained in the draft). Meanwhile, they'll have a deep DL this year. Or do you want to add "son of Kerrigan" in August?

Good balance between being competitive this year without hurting the rebuild.

I expect a bit of a rebound with Cox as Gannon has a better idea how to use him and Cox is more comfortable in this scheme - he's a good fit for a hybrid scheme b/c he can play 3-4 DE, NT or DT.

This contract is fine. I'd have rather paid less, but he's getting open-market EDGE money.

If Barnett is bad, we have an out for 2022. If we draft an EDGE in RD1, we can easily trade Barnett.
If Barnett plays at 2020 level, then the contract is surplus value.

I get it.

The Barnett contract >>>>>>>> Cox contract.

Hes getting open Eagles market edge money. The other 31 teams didnt want him. He didnt have a market. This is what 31 other teams thought of a 25 year old Barnett after 5 years in the league. Theres absolutely no way any team will trade for Barnett if they didnt want him for cheap in free agency.

I still don't like both contracts

I think this was the only way out of his horrendous contract, if they simply cut him he had massive dead cap hits for two years. This had to be a handshake deal, only way they could get out of his contract.
