Howie lost the comp pick game this year.

And every game against a truly competitive team as well.

I wouldn’t go that crazy. He’s soon to be 31 and hasn’t won a single playoff game. Is he an upgrade? Sure. But not one you should be giving up valuable assets for.

Yup.  But this is where the pendulum swings too far in the overreaction to bad QB play.   This is how Kirk Cousins makes as much money as he does, how teams trade up stupid draft capital to get access to a highly flawed prospects.   It isn't easy to wait for the right player to come along and not over pay for 'better but not really good enough'.

But, that's why I am on board with a guy like Strong in Round 2, versus doing anything stupid with any of these first round picks, or trading for one of these veterans.  The veterans have baggage and/or are older and limit your window.  The rookies being discussed in Round 1 are either major projects, or have major flaws (or both).  Strong has his flaws, no doubt.  But, I'd rather a flawed QB with extremely limited mobility that can make all the throws sitting in the pocket, than to gamble on a player that can't play from within the pocket and hope he one day grows into that... at least in Round 2.  In Round 4 or later, sure... roll the dice and work to get their QB IQ higher.  And in Round 1, I can't bring in a guy that can't ultimately be in the conversation as one of the best in the game... especially if I am trading up to do it.   If I 'earn' a top 3 pick and a guy falls in my lap, that's different than hitching my wagon to a flawed QB AND giving up a boat load on top of it.

He’s a top 5 guy in the NFC. But the top 5 guys are Mahomes, Rodgers, Brady, Allen, and…Herbert? You’re not getting any of them no matter what. Nor are you getting Burrow, Wilson, Watson or Stafford. So…what’s left? I argue Carr might be the next best in that bunch.

Derek Carr is being wildly overrated. He is in Jimmy Garoppolo tier. Cousins is better, Prescott is better, I’d argue Garoppolo is better.

He’s not particularly prolific, he’s not particularly efficient, he doesn’t make the players around him better, he goes as the team goes. Derek Carr is the poster boy for middle of the road starter in 2022. Out of 32 teams, he ranks around 15-17. We’re far better off trying to develop someone else than trading assets for Carr.

I was one who was completely fine with making that trade back and getting Fields.  I still believe he has more upside than Hurts.  And even though Smith had a decent rookie year....I am not sold on him being a long term #1 in the NFL.

low bar

Yea just makes you wonder what price tag would be. I don’t care about cap implications, if New Orleans can acquire Watson then Eagles could certainly take on Carr. What do you give up in trade? Is the 19th pick too much or not enough? That’s problem I’m having right now lol

Not enough, I'd think.

Too much.  Way too much.

There are still some players out there that could help quite a bit.

Anthony Harris!  🥳. Get it done, Howie!!!

We're barrel scraping.  We don't have the room that people think we do.  Thanks to the Elite GM.

Sure, that's it. Or maybe we were bidding for Marcus Williams and "The Eagles were said to be 'competitive in discussions' and 'were close' to the five-year, $70 million contract terms he ultimately agreed to." Proving that money as usual is not an issue for us. And that without having to cut many players like most.

Not being able to add any serious upgrades....

Don't like Reddick already?

The Eagles made an extremely competitive offer for Williams, multiple league sources told Inside The Birds, but were unable to stave off the Baltimore Ravens, who agreed with Williams on a reported $70 million pact over five years, a $14 million annual average that Roseman typically balks at for the position.

One source told ITB that the money was essentially the same, but Williams simply chose the Ravens, a franchise with a long and rich history of providing blue-chip talent at Williams’ position.

I’d be VERY curious to see the 16 QBs you have ahead of him. Cousins and Dak’s weapons compared to the crap Carr has had to work with is laughable. I’m just looking to get an actual starting QB who can read a defense and make all the throws here. Hurts doesn’t hit that threshold. Minshew does, but Carr would be an upgrade to Minshew. He’s middle of the road in the AFC but not in the NFC. But I also get not wanting to trade draft collateral for an older vet who doesn’t put you on par with the Chiefs, Bills and Packers, etc. We are stuck in QB purgatory.

Nice try.  Go back to that day.  I was one of a few that was celebrating the move.  So bait elsewhere.....

I wouldn't consider him a "serious upgrade".  I am just happy they decided to add a play maker on Defense.

Definitely a serious upgrade to a team that barely had sacks last year. But, agreed…we need way more.

I'd like to point out that cutting most players here for the Eagles would actually HURT their cap situation given the way that Howie is kicking the can... he can't afford to cut players to lower the cap hit, instead he has to add more void years at the end, and then carry them on the cap for not one year after they are gone... but two.   (See also:  Jeffery, Alshon and Jackson, Malik).  And we've got to experience the pleasure of carrying Desean Jackson on the salary cap last year at a higher cost than he earned from both the Rams and the Raiders combined.

Money is not an issue?  We signed Anthony Harris, Ryan Kerrigan, Eric Wilson and Joe Flacco all to one year deals... that were spread out over multiple years, because of how tight we were to the cap.

And any one can say that the Eagles were 'competitive in the discussion', and 'were close'.  In the world of Free Agency, there's no prize for second place.  So, who knows how 'close' they were.  My guess is that the structure, not the dollar amount might have been the real issue.  Look at the extensions Howie gave out last year... Mailata, Sweat and Goedert.  All have minimal money in the first two years, with balloons coming in year 3 and 4.  Why is that?  Due to the cap restrictions the team is currently dealing with.  Maybe this guy wanted more money earlier in the deal.  We don't know.   Its easy for the Eagles to leak that they were close and in the discussion, but what is that?  That's like Lurie saying that Howie had targeted the right players in the draft, but they just all got taken before our pick.  Meaningless.  What it means is... the actual moves made weren't good enough and another team did it better and got the player that you wanted.  It's a zero sum game.   If they got the player, we didn't.  So, it doesn't matter how close you were.

23 minutes ago, 4for4EaglesNest said:

Oh...that's it.  I am sorry....we got the "you're close" award.  Seeing how you are in here....you seem like the "Participation Award" type.  Howie gets a pat on the back for being close....Fact is....were bottom 1/3rd in the league in cap space...because Lowie kept pushing contracts back and here we are stuck with not being able to move Cox.  Not being able to add any serious upgrades....and a franchise where top name Qb's won't waive their NTC to come to.  Keep defending him though.

Dead last in cap flexibility btw.  DEAD LAST.

So.. it is Howie's fault after all.

Adam Schefter on 97.5 just now when asked if Eagles might be a dark horse team for Watson, if he will want to come here or time to move on.

"Not a chance, time to move on."

Awesome

We would likely have to ship a pick to dump reagor on anyone

With the safety market so barren, I wonder if there any potential CB conversions out there.  I really don't want to watch another season of McLeod/Harris/Epps back there.

Loved honey badger…

like when he left AZ. Would still be an upgrade for us but too old now. Still smart player

nah. teams are dumb and always take chances on former first rounders.

If we wanted a 2 or a high 3 sure.

Someone like the Patriots would give us a 4th tomorrow for him

I we could get a 3rd for Reagor (any 3rd), I'd take that in a heartbeat....

I always thought Rasul would make a better S than CB. Other than that I don’t see any younger CBs on the market that could make that transition.

I am guessing Hicks may not have wanted to come back.  My concern at this point is they have added one starter on defense.  It looks like they are going to head into the draft with more holes than picks.

I think there's some ego driven head coach out there that can "change him".

I would take a 5th for him just so we can get other guys snaps.

To be honest, and fair to Reagor, I think he NEEDS a team change, for no other reason than his own mentality...I don't think he is ever going to be accepted at Philly, and for his own state of mind he needs to be elsewhere, and start afresh...
