Not dropping the ball

Best receiver on the team last year:

Lane Johnson

He caught every pass thrown his way and scored every single time he touched the ball. So, by far, the best receiver on the team this year.

Ward did alright, he scored on a paltry 3 of his 7 receptions.

I think Hurts needs to get to 65% passing this year, and let’s say he makes 500 attempts for ease of numbers. That would put him at 325 completions (Wentz had 322 last year for reference). If he can hit those numbers, that spreads out roughly to

90 for Brown

90 for smith

70 for Goedert

75 to backs, other WRs, etc. Maybe smith ends up with 70-80 catches and the extra 10-20 go to other WRs/backs/TEs.

I think that’s enough to keep everybody satisfied. If Hurts can’t hit those numbers then he’s gotta go. 325 completions would have placed 18th last year, so I don’t think it’s an unreasonable expectation from him. If I were a betting man, I don’t think he hits that mark, unfortunately.

Depends if you think Hurts will play all the games this season or not.  Last season the Eagles threw 494 passes, and in their Super Bowl season they threw 564 -- so I might budget for 550 passes this season for the team.  That would increase the completions to 355-360 at 65% completion -- big IF there.  (last season was 307 total).

Last season the RBs caught 74 passes; the TE caught 83.  Let's say 150 for the WR (actually 149 + 1 from Lane).  If I'm thinking positive toward 360 completions this season, that might break down as follows (assuming everyone stays healthy, which won't happen, but):

WR -- 180 catches.  Brown 75, Smith 70, would only leave 35 left for Watkins/Reagor/Pascal

TE -- 95 catches.  Goedert 65, 30 catches between Calcaterra/Rodgers/Stoll

RB -- 85 catches.  Gainwell 45, Sanders 30, Scott 10

Nice breakdown. I guess the hope would be to move away from throwing it behind the line to RBs and really get it out to Brown/Smith/Goedert as often as possible. The investments made there should dictate that’s where the bulk of throws go. The issue we’ll have is Hurts ultimately. If he continues to throw mostly at or behind the LOS, the WRs and Goedert will be wasted. And then we can move on to a QB who is willing to utilize the talent.

If this continues and Sirianni fails to make a move at QB, we now have issues at HC and QB.   I know you have to build your team but spending $100 million and 2 picks on AJ Brown is a huge risk when you have a QB like Hurts.

I really hope they have a quick trigger if Hurts doesn't improve as a passer.  I don't care how well the running game works if they have to move towards that type of offense again.

If we don’t handle Detroit relatively easily, we’re gonna be in for a very long and disappointing season

Results in week 1 don't have an impact on the rest of the season.

The #1 AFC Seed Titans lost 38-13 to the Cardinals.
The #1 NFC Seed Packers lost 38-3 to the Saints.

Where is this "Hurts throws behind the LOS" stuff comes from?

Eagles were in the top half in passes thrown 20+ yards in the air. With "noodle arm" Hurts.

Now what they should be doing is throwing more screens to RBs (the screen game was subpar last season) and fewer dump offs (more open WR targets replacing Reagor with Brown).

The playoff game.

Hurts was 12-for-12 on throws behind the LOS.  Tragically, he was 11-for-31 on throws .... forward.

Let's go!

Now go get Morocco Brown

Lions have a better QB and arguable a better defense

I don't see how there defense is better than the Eagles.  They added some promising rookies to a bad defense.  The same can be said for the Eagles. I am not sure that means they will be much better in their first game. I will say the fact that the Eagles beat them so badly last year will motivate them.

Hurts' spray chart is just too outside the numbers. The throws near/before/after the LOS are pretty in line with the rest of the NFL. He just needs to throw in the middle of the field more to improve spacing.

James Bradberry will be on the Jim Rome show in 5 minutes.

Won't happen because the D and run game are good. I'd rather see that though and have them have no choice but to make a move. Minshew gives them a better chance.

I see this season starting off with a similar style to how it started off last season. They'll air it out the first four games of the season to try to get out to an early lead and to justify the Brown trade, build off DeVonta's rookie year, and get the other pieces like Goedert involved. And honestly, that's probably the right way to do it. Any competent QB should be able to put up good numbers in this offense. But if they struggle, they'll revert back to a run-heavy offense before pulling the plug on Hurts.

They should skip this step and change the QB and run the offense they want to run.

I agree and they should if Hurts struggles through the first four weeks. But they won't.

Please be kind and courteous when interacting with your fellow Philadelphians this holiday weekend. These two young ladies provide a good example of kindness. Remember them on your journeys.

Yeah... that's not what he meant.

But, Week 1 results absolutely can have an impact on the rest of the season... overall record, tiebreakers, etc.  Just because last year's week 1 results didn't harm the top seeds in either conference does not mean that it cannot.  Losing to Detroit could be the difference in a tiebreaker based on common opponents, conference record, etc.

I do believe his point is that if this team can't beat Detroit in Week 1, that we can likely expect them to also lose other games that we expect them to win.

I said it before, but Week1 is probably the worst time to have that Detroit game.

Yep, you got it.

Meh, I see it as similar to Atlanta last year. I expect a similar result honestly.

Awesome get.

And not to be crass, but future comp pick as well.

Slightly different, as Atlanta had a brand new coaching staff.

And I'm relatively speaking. I expect a win. But I can also see this being a closer game than some think. Week 1 is weird. Eagles will be running a more advanced D relying on light practices instead of game reps so it might take a few weeks to gel, and Lions will probably be motivated and healthy. If we played them Week 8 like last year, the defense will be up to speed and Lions are probably starting to become unmotivated.

Nope. Picks are only for losing staff that become GM's. Unless you mean he eventually gets a GM job somewhere else.

I meant we will get one once he inevitably becomes a GM somewhere else, hence the 'future' comp pick.

Will Williams be ready? Doesn't look like it. It'll certainly be fun to watch their two high draft picks against our tackles.

I think we should win, given those match-ups.

Yea, that hit me right after I hit post. Hopefully. I just hope they give someone the Assistant GM title so that can happen. If they just bring him in as VP, he'll probably leave like everyone else for an AGM title.
