That or signing bonuses.

I think a potential danger in taking prospects from top schools like Alabama And other  stacked college programs is that some of those players look better in college due to being surrounded by a lot of really good players

Absolutely.  A perfect example was that 2002 Miami defense.  Tons of nfl quality players made several busts look better than they were.

The other issue…if someone from Alabama has true elite upside, they are going to be a top 20 pick.  They’ve been surrounded by the best coaching and best talent.  If they weren’t already great there, they probably won’t be here.  And if they WERE great there, it means they are going VERY high.

So Alabama is not a place one should expect to find value in rounds 3-5 for players with upside in this league.

Sucks he has everyone on ignore, still, it will be so much fun to make fun of @RememberTheKoy when Hurts does not get 1 MVP vote, does not significantly improve, even with his hand picked #1 WR, and the Eagles replace him in 2023.

Crawfish suck.  Yeah, I said it.

a "good" player from those 9 schools has proven time and time again then being a "great player" from the other conferences.

Do you have some evidence of that assertion other than your own intuition?  I would find it a lot more powerful argument if you did.

For one thing, you are comparing a good player from those "9 schools" from a great player from "other conferences" rather than "other schools".  The Power 5 conferences include 65 schools, all of which play an equivalently difficult schedule as the 9 schools.  An evaluation that there is a "great player" from one of those 56 other schools should hold pretty much equivalent weight as an evaluation that there is one from those 9 schools since they are facing similar competition.

In fact, because players from the other 56 teams are playing teams from those 9 schools while teams from those 9 schools are playing the weaker 56 teams, players from the other 56 schools are playing argubly more difficult competition than players from the 9 schools (though top teams will get matched up in difficult bowl games and playoff games, perhaps partially offsetting this effect for those teams).

Furthermore, since evaluation of players from the other 56 Power 5 schools is not susceptible to the "Alvin Harper effect" described a few posts ago by someone (because players from those other 56 teams are not playing alongside as many other great players who might help mask their deficiencies), it is possible evaluations of a "great player" at the other 56 schools might be more reliable than evaluations of a "good" or "great" player at the 9 schools.  (That may not apply to players at non-Power 5 schools, but even there there are techniques and opportunities to evaluate players (such as at the Senior Bowl) that can help with the overall reliability of an overall player evaluation.)

So I do not understand why one should believe a player evaluated as "good" from one of those 9 schools will outperform one evaluated as "great" from the other 56. If you have data that supports that assertion, I would genuinely love to be educated.

A study came out about 10 years ago (don't remember the name of it) that showed that taking players from the top programs in RDs1-2 was generally fine, but taking players from those programs in RDs4+ was bad process. Essentially, you're scouted a lot by every team if you play at Alabama, Ohio St, Notre Dame, etc. So if every single team passes on you in the first three rounds, there's something fundamentally bad about you.

CRAWFISH

Sounds like a 5 year $250 million contract to me! LETS GOOOO

Prediction for the 5 NFL teams with the worst records in 2022.  Mine will be:

Chicago, Seattle, Carolina, Houston, and  ....  Detroit, of course.  I could be convinced to substitute JAX/NYJ for Seattle, but I think the Chickens are tanking for a 2023 QB.

I'd swap Atlanta for Carolina

thats how I feel about QB's coming from big schools. Part of the reason I think Trevor Lawrence is gonna be a bust

I don't know if Lawrence will be a bust but he wouldn't be the first QB from a big program to bust in the league.

Whereas there are plenty of QBs from "smaller" schools that have done really well.

Are there plenty?  Off the top of my head for active top QBs I can't really think of any except maybe Lamar Jackson and Russell Wilson.

Excluding this past draft, these are the top schools the Eagles have drafted from since 2010. They have drafted from 59 different schools over that period. It is kind of surprising the lack of SEC schools in the top 5 with only LSU (highest drafted LSU player was Bennie Logan in the 3rd round), but with this past draft Georgia would also move up to the top 5. Also, Alabama was 0 until they drafted Smith and Dickerson in 2021.

Arizona should have 1 as nick foles went to Arizona.

Well there really aren't plenty of teams with top qbs either so maybe take the top 10.

 Rodgers, Herbert, Carr, josh Allen...

Always extend your stars a year before their big breakout, like Mailata and Goedert.

Get it done Howie!

Imagine telling a guy who's been an executive chef for almost 20 years how to clean and prepare a crawfish. If he wasn't RB1, he'd be slapped outta the kitchen.
