I’ve never understood why certain sports like billiards are separated into men’s and women’s leagues. Is there really a physical competitive advantage for men over women in 9-ball pool?

My guess:  On average men are taller and it gives an advantage.  You're not allowed to use that cheat stick for shots you can't reach.

Honestly curious about this, outside of the strength required to break a rack, what is the rationale behind separate men's & women's competitions for something like pool? I'm only a casual player (foosball is more my thing) so maybe I'm missing something obvious to more experienced players, but I've never seen too many shots that required anything where a biological male would have a clear advantage over a female. Does it have to do with height / arm length because you can reach certain shots more easily whereas someone with a shorter torso / shorter arms would struggle more?

EDIT: should've kept reading, asked and answered already

My brother used to be big into pool, and played in local tournaments. I've never heard that it's illegal to use a bridge, just makes you look like a noob, but I could be wrong since these weren't officially sanctioned competitions or anything. I'd imagine using one is far more imprecise than your own hand though, but I'm only a casual player.

Maybe you can?  I just know in my frat you were mocked relentlessly if you did.

Looks like you can.

Mechanical Bridges - The player may use up to two mechanical bridges to support the cue stick during the shot. He may use his own bridge if it is similar to standard commercial bridges.

Then maybe the difference comes down to strength.   Being able to have bigger breaks, more forceful shots and backspin, etc

Yeah breaking a rack in 8-ball is the only thing I could come up in my first post above with that would be an obvious advantage.

I was going to comment that I’ve seen them use the bridge/rake on TV before so I didn’t think that would be if, except that it does add difficulty to the shot.

Regarding power for the break and backspin, I think those are more dependent on technique and form than physical strength. Besides, having more power on the break doesn’t necessarily mean a better spread on the balls. I’ve had breaks where the balls scattered but still ended up with a cluster and others where there isn’t as much movement but ended up with more clear shots.

All of those differences aside, I believe we most likely have separate leagues because when leagues were originally formed for these sports women weren’t accepted among the men and had to form their own leagues to be able to compete as the rights movements happened (to be clear this is just my guess, not based on actually knowing things) and they’re just a carryover of our history.

Yeah, I had the same exact thought as you did when I first saw zuke's tweet. Gotta imagine if there is a disparity in performance between male and female players, it's predominantly due to environmental differences and skill development rather than anything biological / physiological.

so, the dude with teets won by forfeit ...

It's still a lot more accurate to not use a bridge if you can reach than not reach and use a bridge?

I dunno, this argument is stupid.  Thank wokesters.

It's pretty simple. Most men do have a biological advantage against women in virtually all physical competitions including pool. Guys like @we_gotta_believe not so much. So, yeah, there should be separate leagues: one for men and one for women and men with the stature of napoleon.

Hate to see it

These 2 should date. Or at least have some girls nights out to support each other through their struggles.

8 1/2 hours in a single day?  And not even broken up into 4 or 5 smaller chunks?
