It gets a little involved.

Protected practice squad players

NFL rules permit teams to poach other team’s practice squad players. By doing that, they’d sign another team’s practice squadder to their 53-man roster, and he will earn a minimum of three game checks, even if he is released/waived prior to spending three weeks on the active roster.

However, new rules allow teams to protect four practice squad players per week from poaching. At the beginning of a game week, teams submit the names of up to four players who cannot be poached by other teams. A specific player can be protected an unlimited amount of times during one season.

Promotion to the active squad

At any time, a team can sign a practice squad player to their 53-man roster. However, to do so, they have to sign a new contract and make a spot on the roster for them by removing someone off the 53-man squad. If a team wanted to put them back on the practice squad, they would have to either cut or waive them first and then re-sign them to the squad, as long as they are not claimed by another team.

HOWEVER, a new rule allows teams to promote two players from the practice squad per week without the need to create a roster spot—in essence, creating a temporary 55-man roster. Those players are eligible to play in that week’s game, and they revert back to the practice squad at the end of the week without having to pass through waivers.

There is one catch. You can only use this temporary promotion twice on an individual player per season. After that, you’ll have to sign him to the 53-man roster to play them. https://www.prideofdetroit.com/2021/9/1/22651350/2021-nfl-practice-squad-rules-deadline-eligibility

Strangely we haven’t seen any of the anti-poaching protected player announcements this season that we saw each week last season.

Agree it wont happen

Disagree, I like Thursday night football.

Again, product has nothing to do with the day of the week.

I'm not talking about Thursday, or any day. Just that there's too many bad or mediocre teams in general and talent is somewhat spread too thin.

They don't pick the big games for Thursday night because it's not popular viewing time for football. The viewers don't like it. The players don't like it. Just get rid of it.

I’ve taken to watching it on my computer and watching something else at the same time on TV.  Last two games were horrid.  I blame it on the Thursday Night football.

It's crazy you cant look at him with unbiased eyes

Unbiased eyes says the guy who has spent two years hating constantly on Jalen Hurts and is now trying to complain about Hurts after a win that took this team to 5-0.  There isn't anything close to unbiased about your observations.

That I agree with.

But thats literally every sport.

NHL and MLB should be about 16 teams. NBA should be about 12 teams and I think the NFL would do well around 18 teams

There is way too much talent in the NBA for there to only be 12 teams.

I'd be good with less. Dissolve the bottom team from each conference and spread the players to boost up talent.

It's not going to happen, but it would be a better product.

Or work with spring leagues to develop more depth of talent.

Patience.  The Injury Report will be released in a few hours.

He was at practice for the open part. No idea how much he actually did.

Again, if the Eagles activate Dillard, they’ll have to release someone. He’s not a free activation. After some reconsideration, I suspect it will be Robinson. He cleared waivers in August. No reason to think he wouldn’t again. Then it would be a matter of getting him to sign with our PS rather than Minnesota’s. Presumably they’d still want him.

We’d be kinda thin at DE if that were the case, but I think that’s gonna be the position that Howie fills at the trading deadline.

By the way, it pained me last night watching Casey Toohill running around there for the ex-Redskins getting involved in plays. He should have been ours. These bottom of the roster moves may be irrelevant to some people but they are important. You can lose a guy if you misjudge the risk involved in waiving them. Howie gambled and lost on him.

How about Jobe to IR? Maddox is getting close to recovery and they can elevate McCain or Chachere.

I think the issue with quality of play overall is the availability of quality QB play

The NFL has gone out of their way to make it a QB league.  For teams with great QBs, it's amazing.

But then youve got poor teams with bad QBs playing a QB-centric game.

You also have to get this record out of your mind. They havent had a real test yet and he hasnt looked good in all the games, for a full 1000%.

No real test yet? They have given the Vikings their only loss this season.  They won a shootout with the Lions in a loud Detroit stadium.  They took down a hungry Jags team in a monsoon.  And now most recently they went and won on the road in a trap game scenario with the offensive line losing guys left and right throughout the game to win in a stadium where this team has never won before.

Andy, McNabb, JJ & Dawkins couldn't beat the Cardinals in that stadium. Vick couldn't get it done in that stadium. Foles couldn't get it done in that stadium. That's an impressive feat to finally win somewhere that this franchise hasn't been able to do dating back to the late 00s over a decade ago.

Is Jobe injured? I honestly don't know. He's played all year.

Nah, for Dillard they will release Josh Sills.  OL for OL.  With Dillard back, Driscoll joins Opeta at backup guard.

Is Jobe hurt?  He's been playing valuable ST reps.

You're right dude. Hurts is the best. Hurts is the reason theyre 5-0, no one else and no one should ever doubt Hurts or say he played "ok"

He was limited yesterday. There wasn't anyone with a DNP.

Are we bringing back desean Jackson for punt returns or what 😆

Let's assume that Dillard gets cleared and is activated off IR and put back on the active roster during the bye week. Who do we think would be the person who gets waived to clear the roster spot? I don't think it'll be Ian Book since they claimed him with the obvious intention of him getting a full training camp. They knew going in that they were not going to subject to waivers where he might get nicked off. So I really doubt it would be him. Likewise for Josh Sills, the "last guy" on the offensive line depth chart. It's not dissimilar to the year they kept Nate Herbig on the active roster the entire season and never dressed him. Granted, Sills was dressed last week, but the point still stands. They aren't going to waive him and have him get claimed. Calcaterra? Doubtful. He was drafted for a reason, and that is that he's a promising receiving tight end candidate. A running back? Maybe they could put Scott on IR but that only delays the issue because someone would have to get waived when you bring Scott back later. And I'm not sure how injured he would really be anyway. He might even play on Sunday night for all I know. I hope he does. Trey Sermon? Not likely. I wouldn't think they'd release Covey since he's the return man and he's already exhausted all of his practice squad call-ups. And if you released him, you'd still have to sign someone to return punts so you wouldn't really be clearing a spot anyway.

I guess it would most likely be someone on defense. Defensive line? The depth at end is shaky enough already. Maybe Janarius Robinson. Maybe. A linebacker? I doubt it would be one of the Johnsons. It won't be one of the starters, and it won't be Dean. I'm not a fan of Shaun Bradley but they seem to like him. A defensive back? Jobe? I don't think so. Scott? Maybe? Or could you buy a few weeks by simply putting Maddox on IR? I suppose. Blankenship? Sheesh, I'd hate to give up on him so quickly after having him be a diamond in the rough in training camp. Maybe it's Wallace? Y'know, I kinda think he'd be the one I'd go with. He's had his opportunities and has never really done anything. And would we really fear him getting claimed anyway? Wouldn't he likely clear waivers and make the practice squad? In that case, you could activate him three times for free and push the problem back into November. Perhaps you try that same tactic with Siposs? Waive him, hope he clears waivers, and then put him on the practice squad for three weeks. That would be pretty risky though because while I don't think he would be claimed, you'd kinda screw yourself in regards to having a holder that your kicker is comfortable with. I'm not sure I'd do that.

Maybe the problem will sort itself out with a player getting injured this week.

I remain curious about how this issue will be resolved. My top three guesses in order would be Wallace, Robinson, and Blankenship.

I hate to agree with bacarty, but this is a bad take.  It has nothing to do with Thursday night, it is the games they choose to put on.  Is it going to be a bad product if the Eagles are 7-0 when they play the Texans on Thursday night week 9 ??  Will it be a bad product when it is the Ravens and Bucs week 8 ??  Titans v Packers week 11 ??

Whether the game is played Thursday, Sunday or Monday, a bad game is a bad game.  Bears Patriots is the Monday night game next week, will that make Monday night a bad product ?? Steelers Colts week 12, does that make Monday night a bad product ??

No worries.  It's a great take.   I'll explain.

SNF and MNF are nationally broadcast games and teams have to earn the right to play in those games.  They aren't just given away.

The late Sunday afternoon network games (aka, the "Game of the Week) are also based on the networks deciding which games are worthy of being nationally televised.  And the networks get to choose those games.

Now, when it comes to the TNF games, which teams gets those?   The answer is ALL OF THEM.  Why is that?  Because they can't ask teams to play on short rest multiple times in the year... its not safe.   So, every year, the product TNF puts out there... I'd say about half of the games are pretty much brutal matchups.   Very few TNF games would be considered a top 4 or 5 match up for a given week of games.   Therefore, TNF is a garbage product AND, on top of that, it is less safe for players than playing on Sunday or Monday.   It is a simple money grab by the league, because they believe that NFL fans will watch any matchup that's available, when there's only one choice.

SNF is set up with flex games late in the year, so that they can select the best games to broadcast so that they don't end up with a matchup like the Bears vs. the Washingteam.  SNF is a better product than TNF and the system is set up to ensure that it is.

MNF is also a better product than TNF, as ESPN pays to get better matchups than the Steelers/Colts matchup will be this year.  The Colts barely missed the playoffs and the Steelers always have a following, so from a dollar and sense standpoint, that game will draw eyeballs, or would have... on paper, until the Colts end up crapping the bed for the entire season.

But, overall, MNF is also a much worse product than it had been historically, because the NFL has now catered to more markets and has started to give lesser teams games on MNF, and has stopped showcasing the top teams as frequently.  So, yes, MNF is no longer the product it once was, even ignoring the bad production that it has been in recent years with ESPN.   But, MNF only has a handful of games that are really bad matchups.  TNF has a lot of bad matchups compared to SNF, MNF, and the Game of the Week games.  Not sure how an argument can be made otherwise.

Quick check:
TNF:
Week 2: Chargers - Chiefs - Great matchup!
Week 3: Steelers - Browns - Classic matchup.
Week 4: Dolphins - Bengals - Good matchup.
Week 5: Colts - Broncos - Brutal.
Week 6: Washingteam - Bears - Brutal
Week 7: Saints - Cardinals - Gross.
Week 8: Ravens - Bucs - Good matchup
Week 9: Eagles - Texans - Not a good matchup
Week 10: Falcons - Panthers - You couldn't pay me to watch that one.
Week 11: Titans - Packers - Good matchup
Week 13: Bills - Patriots - Good matchup
Week 14: Raiders - Rams - Meh
Week 15: 49ers - Seahawks - This isn't what it was.  Bad matchup.
Week 16: Jags - Jets - Brutal
Week 17: Cowboys - Titans - Decent matchup.

(Week 1 is Kickoff Weekend, and so exempted from TNF.
Week 12 is Thanksgiving Day, and so exempted from the TNF formula.)

15 games... less than half would be considered good matchups to me.

MNF:
Week 1: Broncos - Seahawks - Only drama was Wilson going back to Seattle.  Bad matchup.
Week 2: Titans - Bills - Good matchup.
Week 2 part 2: Vikings - Eagles - Good matchup.
Week 3: Cowboys - Giants - classic matchup and turned out better than anticipated
Week 4: Rams - 49ers - Good Matchup.
Week 5: Raiders - Chiefs - Classic matchup - good game.
Week 6: Broncos - Chargers - Was a better matchup before we found out Wilson couldn't play in Denver.
Week 7: Bears - Patriots - Bad matchup.
Week 8: Bengals - Browns -  meh.  Both were supposed to be playoff contenders though.
Week 9: Ravens - Saints - bad matchup
Week 10: Washingteam - Eagles - Meh.  Division rivals, and NFC East matchups always draw eyes.
Week 11: 49ers - Cards - Meh.  Division rivals, but not that many folks care.
Week 12: Steelers - Colts - Bad matchup.
Week 13: Saints - Bucs - Bad matchup - Brady draws eyes though.
Week 14: Patriots - Cards - Two playoff teams from last year, not going to be a great matchup this year though, it seems.
Week 15: Rams - Packers - Good matchup.
Week 16: Chargers - Colts - Bad matchup this year.  Was a better matchup last year.
Week 17: Bills - Bengals - Good matchup on paper at the start of the season.

You can compare for yourself how TNF stacks up against MNF.   I won't compare it to SNF, because the deck tilts in favor of SNF without needing to lay it out.   They change the schedule to try to get better matchups on SNF at the end of the year.  SNF >> TNF.   But, I think that its clear even with MNF being down compared to where it once was... that MNF >> TNF also, just not as much as SNF.

Sills is Stoutland's pet project for this year. The Eagles kept him over Anderson and Awosika, both of whom are good enough to be on active rosters of other teams. They made a special point about how versatile is. I would venture to say there is zero chance he would be cut.
