EMB Blog: 2022 Regular Season (and beyond?) - NO POLITICS

The performance of other QBs does nothing to diminish what Hurts is doing.  He is having an all time great season by a QB in franchise history.  If anything that speaks more to what Hurts is doing.  Instead of struggling like other QBs he is instead having one of the best seasons at QB in his franchise's history.

Tired of hearing about Ohio St year after year, they WILL 100% get smashed when they play Georgia, Tenn or Bama in the playoff much like Michigan did last year.

Northwestern is trash and 1-7

How many teams in the entire NFL have had good QB play this year?  If you have provided your team with good QB play through 8 weeks, you are "elite" on the bell curve this year.

I do think the pro-Hurts crowd is looking like they are right on this one, but it feels like the goal posts have been moved with a new QB landscape right now.

By accident (probably) the Eagles may have gotten a head start on living productively within that new QB landscape.  The question is whether that new QB landscape is only a temporary glitch in  the QB prospect pipeline, or something permanent.  Mahomes and Hurts and Dak are examples of what we might have to expect from that new QB landscape if it is permanent.  Allen is closer to the old QB landscape, but still a bit of a hybrid of the old and the new.

The question that the Eagles face is "what's next?"

I like coffee.  I really do.  I'm working on a mug right now.  And when I'm done with it, I'll have another.

Peets Garuda Blend is our go-to coffee.  A nice rich dark roast brewed in a French Press.  Thanks to sports radio (either Greenie or Clin Cowherd) I bought a bunch of Butterfinger candy bars, and am having Butterfinger and coffee for breakfast.  It actually is quite good.

This is a fair question.

  • Allen
  • Mahomes
  • Hurts
  • Tua
  • Burrow
  • Geno

Only guys I think have been very good week-win, week-out.  Then you get another tier of guys who are inconsistent, but have produced, like Cousins, Murray, Herbert, Goff, Stafford. Brady and Rodgers have been flat-out bad in some games.

Dak is probably in the first group, but his missed games have obscured that.

Building on the "new QB landscape" comment made earlier Mahomes, Hurts, Tua and Burrow (and Dak) pretty much fit that description.  Burrow is probably the closest to being an "old QB landscape" example, with Allen being a bit of a hybrid of both.

TDN has really gone downhill lately. They have the same articles up for a month or more. And they still dont have their mock draft game working. Seems like absolutely no one is working on that website.

Cam Ward and Cam Rising

Rising is dealing with a knee issue currently, missed last game against WSU his status for Arizona is ???

Rising is probably going to be a late Day Two pick, or possibly even an early Day Three pick.  I would love to see him on the Eagles roster after the Draft.  I'm also willing to take a flyer on Max Duggan TCU's QB, who will probably be a UDFA.  Both those players would be excellent additions to the Eagles QB pipeline.

Allen and Mahomes are at the top of the heap because they’ve demonstrated the "clutch gene” regularly.  The ability to play at their best at the highest stakes.  Dak and Cousins, for instance, are two guys who have shown repeatedly they do not possess the gene.  Lamar to this point does not have it; BAL will likely have to beat the AFC competition from the #3 seed.  Herbert is another QB who is coming under scrutiny for no playoff appearances.  Burrow gets ranked very highly because of the Bengals run to the Super Bowl last season and his accompanying level of play.

Hurts and Tua haven’t had the opportunity yet to display if they’re "clutch” or not.  Their performance in this year’s playoffs will tell a lot — especially for Hurts if the Eagles go in as the #1 seed in the NFC

TEN vs UGA, any players to watch in particular? Not sure Carter has recovered, and Nolan Smith is out for the year.  Hendon Hooker is even older than Kenny Pickett. Ringo, UGA TEs… probably some OL.

The thought of Davis and Carter being reunited on the same D-Line is very enticing to consider.

I'm going to give Howie, Siri...and Lurie...some props here.  This may not have been an accident.

Hurts was not a good passer in college or through 2 years here.  He was not a prototypical prospect.  And they got him for cheap.  But he had the right attitude and work ethic.  They took that, built everything else, and patiently manufactured him into someone that is producing better than all except 2-3 QBs in the league.

I'm going to give them full credit for doing it that way (only fair since I'd be giving them full blame if this went down in flames).  I think they were ahead of the curve.

Now...the QB landscape.  I don't think the demands or the prototype for the position are changing.  We all know I hate running QBs.  Hurts himself is exhibit A for this.  He's getting better as a passer and doing less as a runner.  The only difference is that the quality of QB-ing is falling off a cliff at the same time that there is this new trend of young, mediocre QBs getting huge contracts.  That's the new challenge to NFL franchises.  Unless you have Mahomes or Allen, you can't reliably build a championship team with a merely good QB on a contract like that.  Hurts may become the best of the rest, but I still say he can't be on that kind of contract.

I'm not a huge fan of rising, he's got a cool mustache but he doesn't have an elite arm, he plays kind of reckless and seems he's always dinged.

We'll see how he turns out, as a BYU fan I'm obligated to not like him...

Interesting.  Thanks for sharing.  What you have said caused me to think of ranking the QBs with a two-level approach.  First level covering the tools and pure stats.  Second level for the "clutch gene."  Lamar is a QB that wasn't on RC's initial list, and because he is demonstrably so lacking in the 'clutch gene" his name never went through my mind, while at the same time Dak's name did.  Lamar clearly has the tools, and arguably the stats as well, but the X-factor is clearly missing in him.

I struggle with Lamar. I could argue he's the 3rd best QB in the NFL, given all the metrics. I could just as easily argue his play doesn't translate against good defenses. I feel very confident he's above average, but how much higher than that? It's tough.

That is the place I have gotten to as well.  If Hurts will sign for a Brady-like discount knowing that he is going to make up the forsaken revenue in endorsements revenue, then I'm more open minded, but signing him to a Kyler Murray sized extension sucks the life out of the ability to address the other key positions on the team Edge, CB and OT.

@Original Sin what are your thoughts on the bolded thoughts on Rising?

Hurts is too

burrow is still ahead based on weight of evidence.

Burrow also benefits from a great receiving core.  The loss of Chase has already been and will continue to be a blow.

For what it's worth since both took over some bad teams, Hurts has a better career record than Burrow and that gap is only widening.

Hurts 17-10-0

Burrow 16-17-1

Does NFL.COM no longer provide the archive of local radio broadcasts for the games?

Fining him for that is ridiculous

I've never seen it with CJ Stroud.

I'm not a scout or expert evaluator or whatever, but I don't think any of these QBs look that great to be honest. Maybe Bryce, that's about it.

Phillies playing Sosa tonight and haven't moved Castellanos down in the order. Barring coming back and winning this series, I'm kinda over the love affair with Topper tbh. His blind loyalty was cool for a while, but it's costing them now and he's refusing to make a change when their backs are against the wall. It's ridiculous.

Man, the energy level and atmosphere of UGA/Tenn is through the roof.

Makes sense since it’s an open-air stadium.

Cripes, that was a terrible joke. My apologies.

Yep. Being calm and steady is great, which he was for the last two games of them not hitting. Now, it's time to make a move to spark your team. Bohm needs to be batting 5th.

He also refuses to play small ball like asking Castellanos or Hoskins to bunt to advance runners or catch them off guard playing the shift. They don't have time for guys to play their way through things (that have been going on all season). It's time to be a manager and put them in a position to overcome their shortcomings and get them out of their slump. You are right it's ridiculous.
