EMB Blog: 2022 Regular Season (and beyond?) - NO POLITICS

Hey @Utebird, I just posted a doozy in R&R making fun of an OP.  Why don’t you go in and add to the insults?  Not in here though. I’ll be offended.

Hell I think for tonight we should be able to talk politics in blog. Let’s have some civil, mature conversations… I’ll start…

Republicans = sheep

Democrats = pu$$ys

The discussion didn't involve politics but rather economics and monetary policy.  But, apparently, people either don't know the difference or don't care to learn.  Easier to just point the finger at a politician and say it's all their fault that the world is experiencing inflation.

So when is Mailata gonna stop sucking? I’m sure you’ll all keep making excuses for him.

He was pretty bad last game.  Not a great look.  He definitely needs some work against speed rushers on the edge but he is dominant everywhere else.  His run blocking and ability to withstand a bullrush are very good.

Think Mailata's play of late is the byproduct of recovering from his shoulder injury and not regression.

Those who know, was Mailata struggling this season prior to his injury?

I was watching him the last couple of games and it looks like his kicks are not quick enough to deal with speed rushers

A month before that draft he was thought of as a top 20 prospect, then he slid all the way to the back end of the 3rd round before getting drafted at #86 overall -- something was amiss for sure.

Since then, he's been waived by 3 teams in the past few months.  He's about out of chances.

Trust Stout.  Whatever decision is made will be the right one.

I believe they are talking about Economics rather than politics, but your point is taken.

Typically in most Universities the Political Science department is in the College of Arts and Sciences and the Economics department is in the Business School.  Two very different academic disciplines.

Well said Cliff.  Very well said.

I think he could honestly benefit from leaning up a little bit.  He's almost 370 lbs.  I'm sure if he was to be 6-8 around 350 he would do much better.  I also think some of the limelight may have gotten to his head this offseason.  Cripes, the guy was on the Masked Singer.  He's getting fame he never could have imagined and while I think he is handling it well, I think he needs to focus on football.  He bulked up as fast as possible while learning how to play football.  Look how lean Lane Johnson is.  Not saying Mailata needs to look like that but 15-20 lbs could do wonders for him.

Indeed it could.  On that subject there are two ways to accomplish a Draft trade.  The more frequent method is to exchange the picks, which has the risk that subsequent to the trade another team executes a second trade that leaps over the Eagles at the new lower Draft pick and takes the player the Eagles want.  The second, less frequently used, method is to pre agree between the trading teams on the players each team wants to Draft.  The trade is agreed upon, but the team with the earlier pick selects the player the lower pick team wants (in this example lets say it is Anderson),and holds on to the player until their trading partner has made their pick (in this example lets say it is Jalen Carter) and then the trade is made.  If the agreed on player the Eagles want is no longer available when the trade partner team picks, then the trade is voided and the Eagles keep the player they chose, in this example, Anderson.

Using the historical examples, here's three questions for everyone:

(1) Would you take the trade of #3 (Will Anderson) for #6 (Jalen Carter) plus two 2nd Round picks in 2023 (#37 and #49 in the 2018 example)_ and a 2nd Round pick in 2024?

(2) Would you take the trade of #4 (Will Anderson) for #6 (Jalen Carter) plus a second late 1st Round pick this year (#28 in the 1992 example)?

(3) Would you take the trade of #4 (Will Anderson) for #9 (Myles Murphy - Edge or Joey Porter - CB are possibilities) plus an extra 1st Round pick in 2024 and a 4th Round pick in 2024 (the 2014 example)

I would do all three scenarios with the guarantee as Anderson, Carter and Murphy share the same tier for me. I’d likely do the first two scenarios blind depending on the 1-2/1-3 selections. If Anderson, Carter and Murphy were all available without a significant tradeback offer on the table, I’d take Anderson. The additional picks give you the opportunity to flesh out the roster, but it also spreads out the injury/bust risk - more lotto tickets.

Anderson is a good fit for our penny front and as a pass rush specialist when we go nickel/dime. Carter will work in any front. Murphy can play base end in a 4-man line although I think I’ve only seen him work over the LT. As long as, Gannon is playing multiple fronts they all seem to fit.

Speaking of economics, I wonder if the projection of an ever increasing salary cap isn’t flawed if the economy goes into recession.  We are already seeing a decrease in discretionary spending.  We have seen for almost a year now steadily decreasing ad revenues impacting Google, Facebook, Twitter and other platforms. I am not convinced as the likes of NBC ponders decreasing its entertainment schedule that NFL games, despite their popularity, will support increasing ad revenues. Frankly, other than the Eagles games, the majority of sports I want are ad free. The NFL realized that the GamePass cost was not sustainable and when it rebranded as NFL+, it decreased the price.   Howie needs to be paying attention or he faces another round of cap limitation.

The TV deals are already signed.  This isn't a year to year thing.  NBC and their ad revenue is their own issue.  They and the other networks are locked into what they are paying the NFL for their broadcasting rights until 2033.

Add the shutdowns in China and the La Niña drought to the mix.  It flabbergasts me that folks don’t realize that China is the biggest fertilizer manufacturer in the world and that Russia and Ukraine produce 28% of the world’s fertilizer and the impact on domestic food production. Couple that with the OPEC tightening on Oil exports and the La Niña drought and that’s what is causing the price of food and gas to increase.  Then couple that with the supply chain issues of demand outstripping supply, mainly because of the shutdowns in China and overload on the ports and it pretty much explains our current situation.

No disrespect to @austinfan but economists are theorists that are less accurate than the local weatherman. Powell grossly mistimed the Fed’s slowing of buying and delayed the raising of interest rates. Despite labor shortages, the earnings reports have been pretty good for the third quarter. Yet Powell is convinced that too many folks have jobs and that is resulting in overburdening demand because too many people having jobs means too much money to spend.  No Jerome, it is under production of simple chips (cars), manufacturing shut downs due to China’s no tolerance Covid policy and the impact on imperial Russia’s attempt to recreate the Soviet empire. Now, I agree that free money for big banks went too long but the big jumps every three months need to stop.

I had an interesting conversation with a relative whose family was in real estate.  She is in her seventh decade.  She mentioned that 7% is nothing on a mortgage.  That matches what our folks paid and what my generation refinanced to from our double digit mortgage rates.

7% is nothing on a 100k property, with a 30-50k salary. Low supplies have balooned property values where a 250k ish house is being overbid at 350-400k but the salaries have not caught up to the cost mortgages, not to mention cost of living.

Btw, wtf is CVON?

The Kelce brothers will have Hurts on their podcast thursday in a special episode.

Their regular episode dropped a day early and, as always, is a must listen.
