He did a helluva job protecting himself on Sunday. Matter of time

@we_gotta_believe   I think you are right.   Eagles are going to ride Hurts like Dallas rode Demarco Murray.

We aren't a Von Miller away from a Super Bowl, so I just don't see that as feasible.  And unlike RBs, young DEs are hard to come by, so I don't see a 25 year old being made available.

Maybe if OAK starts getting blasted - a guy like Clelin Ferrell (no 5th year option)... but we're talking about depth here, no answer.

Yeah, and even personally speaking, I was always on pins and needles when Randall, McNabb, or Vick took a shot on a scramble. Because the drop off in talent from them to the backup was pretty steep. But with Hurts, I'm like, "Eh whatever," because Minshew might even be an upgrade.

edit: Thinking back though, Peete and Foles proved quite capable in hindsight, but you get the idea.

I'd like to know the exact number of times Hurts threw the ball away yesterday.  I suspect the numbers feels higher than it actually was because each throw away was so memorable (either ugly or dangerous).  What's noteworthy about it, however, was that every single throwaway was almost unquestionably and clearly an instance in which he was caught in the flat while trying to run with it...but was caught behind the LOS and managed to throw it away.

This is information that can be used to manipulate the stats in a few ways.

1. The humpers can definitely argue that his completion percentage was functionally higher than reflected in the stats because these weren't true passing throwaways.  They were busted running plays.

2.  Might want to re-evaluate the run-pass ratio because those plays really ought to be tabulated as runs and subtracted from the pass total.  That might further illustrate how it would be difficult to get Sanders more carries when so many plays with Hurts are already predictable runs...if you allow Hurts to run at this rate and expect to drop back and actually get completions, there aren't enough plays for Sanders to get more involved.

Did I miss a bunch of non-calls on Hurts being hit?  I know the one play where the player got ejected was a late hit (I didn't think it was that egregious to be honest).  I see lots of people complaining about it and Sirianni was asked about it.

I used to pity teams that committed to offenses like this.  Some of that may be coach speak, but at some point, you take the man at his word and have to assume he just doesn't know any better.

Yeah, it was a little chippy - but things happen when your QB runs 17 times.

This answer is well and good after a win, but after a loss when the question becomes "why isn't your QB distributing the ball to his playmakers?" it becomes harder to be dismissive

Teams lick their chops when a QB is carrying it.  And as dynamic as Hurts is as a runner and as impressive as his running stats are, he's not a Vick like weapon where defenders are flat-out scared on their heels.  So they are going to throw their bodies into him every chance they get.  When a star QB runs 0-5 times per game, in the eyes of the refs, they might as well be running downfield in a red jersey.  When you use your QB like a running back, the refs will allow him to get hit like a running back.  And that's what happened Sunday.

It was a lot of stuff like this

I don't think it's necessarily a penalty though. Hurts begins his slide late as the Lions players lunges forward. Not sure what they expect the defender to do in this situation.

Oh that's why.  This guy sounds like a moron.   Good thing they didn't give up any big plays, they just can't get off the field and stop the Detroit Lions.

Pretty invisible yesterday.

You have to stop mid-air apparently.

I think all has already been revealed to us, even after 1 week.  The Eagles are going to be a win some, lose some, beat the bad, lose to the good kind of team.  Part of that is because the defense isn't so good and part of that is because the QB can't pass, but will occasionally light teams on fire with his legs.  That's how it's been, that's how it is, that's how it will be.  I don't think there is any mystery here moving forward.

I don't get this narrative about "guys like Allen and Mahomes and Herbert are unicorns", like they're as uncommon as looking for a Yeti or discovering plutonium in the backyard.

NONE of those QBs were even drafted in the top 5 -- you develop them.  You find guys with elite measurables, and you coach and develop them.  It isn't rocket science.

It apparently is rocket science otherwise there'd be a lot more QBs like that starting

What about QB's with poor measurables who are also raw and in need of a complete developmental overhaul?

Watched the press conference and this is taken a bit out of context.

Because that's our gameplan?

For a guy who wants to be all secretive for competitive reasons.  High School Harry sure does say a lot in his press conferences.  Hey guys, I’m assuming D Smith will get a lot more looks next week.

I assumed Siri would force it with Hurts in week 1 to attempt to flex some passing improvement and sophistication.  Push it downfield, sit in the pocket longer, look to secondary reads, etc.  I figured the results would be mixed (Hurts sucks at these things, but we have great weapons against a horrific Detroit secondary)...but I expected them to press on these things.  The Lions were the most QB friendly defense in the entire NFL last year.

I was definitely wrong.

Now I'd normally expect the game plan for week 2 to be to force 1-read Hurts into Devonta Smith to reverse the narrative and diversify the offense.  But I don't think Siri wants to venture far from the comfort zone, especially when the resistance will be tougher.
