Hurts begins his slide late as the Lions players lunges forward. Not sure what they expect the defender to do in this situation. The defender, Hutchison, was not in the act of tackling when Hurts began his slide. I thought that one should have been a penalty.

I suspect the numbers feels higher than it actually was because each throw away was so memorable (either ugly or dangerous). What's noteworthy about it, however, was that every single throwaway was almost unquestionably and clearly an instance in which he was caught in the flat while trying to run with it...but was caught behind the LOS and managed to throw it away. This is information that can be used to manipulate the stats in a few ways. 1. The humpers can definitely argue that his completion percentage was functionally higher than reflected in the stats because these weren't true passing throwaways. They were busted running plays. 2. Might want to re-evaluate the run-pass ratio because those plays really ought to be tabulated as runs and subtracted from the pass total. That might further illustrate how it would be difficult to get Sanders more carries when so many plays with Hurts are already predictable runs...if you allow Hurts to run at this rate and expect to drop back and actually get completions, there aren't enough plays for Sanders to get more involved. I think the number was 3, including a non-called intentional grounding, where he was half-sliding while grounding it while being inside the pocket and the ball never reached the LOS.

I know the one play where the player got ejected was a late hit (I didn't think it was that egregious to be honest). I see lots of people complaining about it and Sirianni was asked about it. Walker was ejected for fighting after the whistle, not for the late hit

He was bumped into in the backfield after handing off on one occasion, and on a lot of slides he was fallen on top of. And when you put the QB in that position innumerable times per game, the benefit of the doubt transitions to the defense on bang-bang plays. When you've got a franchise golden boy doing it a couple times per game, he'll get protected.

Some of that may be coach speak, but at some point, you take the man at his word and have to assume he just doesn't know any better. As long as they don't commit money to him, I guess I can get behind it for this year. Seems that they have no interest in truly developing him as a passer... and are just waiting until they can get a new QB.
September 12, 20223 yr Barnett’s injury is unfortunate but at the same time he’s been less and less effective each year. Probably a few weeks out but this is a perfect set up for Howie to trade for a pass rusher which I’m betting happens at some point.

Had only one of them been unnecessary roughness he would have stayed in the game if I'm not mistaken.

September 12, 20223 yr With this offense, I'd much prefer a WR corps of Brown/Pascal/Watkins/Ward and the 2021 #10 pick utilized anywhere but WR.

Off the top of my head, I think the refs actually did a solid job (minus the Hockensen catch but I think that was mostly due to the call on the field). They mostly let them play. And if people want to gripe out not getting late hits called, Lions fans can gripe about a few missed intentional grounding and delay of game penalties.
