EMB Blog: 2022 Regular Season (and beyond?) - NO POLITICS

I was pondering Hurt’s’ development.  I wonder if Gannon’s inability to disguise a defense hinders Hurts in practice.  I was so disappointed in the defensive playcalling but even more in the actual defensive plays.  Need Fangio to be helping Gannon not Howie.

That said, the offense needs more motion, IMHO.  Not just simple motion but some double motion.  I actually like the route calling and the OL blocking feints but Nick needs to take it to the next level. Shane seems to be an unimaginative play caller.  So was Doug.  That gets predictable.

Wrong. You don't think his accuracy and decision making was improved in that game? You don't think the oline was out of sync? RBs not picking up the blitz? Give the guy a chance. He was the reason they won. He still needs to improve and show it consistently. But he is improving whether you admit it or not.

Actually, Kyzir White and James Bradberry are the reason we won.

Goff outscored Hurts 35-31

On the flipside of that, do you think it is hard for Gannon to scheme his defense and practice it when they are practicing against a college offense all week ??

You're too narrow-minded to have this conversation with.

You know our RBs combined for 22 carries for 126 yards and 3 TDs right?

The O-line looked pretty good when we used the position groups properly.

But "Superman" Hurts had to get his (17 carries, FML), and well, here we are.

Not for nothin....Jack looks pretty happy in there, doesn't he?

Hurts was the best version of himself and his pass protection sucked quite often.

If Howie isn’t going to use the 53rd position, he should F with Jerry and sign Grier for three weeks. Jerry will retaliate by resigning DiNucci or maybe even Sinnett.  Either way, it’s a step down.

3 days now removed from a win where Hurts played very well and was a major reason for the win and the blog is now proclaiming that he was a "God awful QB" in the game.

This might just be the most detached from reality echo chamber that you can view on the internet right now.

Theres just a clear difference in how some fans view and watch games vs others. You and his believers watched Hurts on Sunday and saw the offense put up 31 points while he had a great connection with AJ Brown and he made a lot of plays with his legs and got some big first downs.

Others like myself watched him on Sunday and saw the bigger picture. That his type of play like he showed vs the Lions will not get it done in the playoffs. It can only go so far. If a QB can not read through his progressions before and after the snap, and if that QB does not have the arm strength to make certain types of throws...then they are inevitably doomed and will lose vs better teams with better defenses in the biggest of stages. We have seen it time and time again.

You watched what happened Sunday and are happy and hopeful long term. We watched what happened on Sunday and we see a waste of time, because we know there is no happy ending, and I think thats pretty much the major difference between fans. Some see short term success and thats all it takes to make them happy and hopeful, while others are always looking at what it takes to win the Superbowl because at the end of the day nothing else matters. Its about what does it take to win the Superbowl and if you dont have what it takes then its a waste of a season and its disappointing for us.....and that leads to extreme takes like "he played god awful". We know he didnt play god awful, but we are disappointed because this whole season is a waste of time and a waste of talent around the QB.

He did that against the #29 defense in yards allowed and the #31 defense in points allowed last year.

You can say they added all the talent in the world, but until they perform otherwise, they are that same defense.

Cool. Means nothing to me. If you think that was the same lion's team as you're referring to then I don't know what to tell you.

Cool. Your point?

My initial take on McPhearson winning STs player of the week was, geez all he did was catch an onside kick like you are trained to do.  But on watching the All 22, there is more.  He was very good on blocking on returns.  Except for the play where he ran into Covey, so was Pascal.   I suspect at some point we are going to see returns start to develop as Covey gets more used to NFL speed.  I joke about using the 53rd spot but I would just keep Covey active.

I counted three times in the first half when Hurts came off his first read and went to the second, and once to the third. On four scrambles where he threw the ball away, no one was open. I charge that to play design. If you don't have a checkdown you're asking for trouble. On another note, it's wrong to complain about failure to audible. In that stadium it was too loud to check out of one play for another. Hurts tried, several times, but no one could hear. Home field advantage.

You think QBs only use their mouths to audible in a loud stadium?????

Until they prove otherwise, they are the same horrible defense from last year, I don't care what talent they added.

Pathetic response. I’m from PA, not TX. But keep using that lazy, tired attempt to defame me based on living in TX. Agenda, racism, Texas.

Just watch the game. If your eyes told you that was the worst defense in the league then you just don't know what you're watching.

I’m not talking about the Lions. Hurts had a good game. He was the best version of himself. However, I’m far from saying he’s a franchise QB and don’t believe he ever will be. My feeling is Sirianni agrees.

After week 1, they are 30th in yards allowed and 31st in points allowed, just like they were last year.

Lets revisit this after week 2 and see if they get better or worse.

Defense should win some snaps. I saw Hurts bail on a clean pocket once where there was an open receiver watching the All 22 and in that case Dickerson was clearly at least three yards downfield. Overall the best play on the field Sunday was Lane (one misstep that I saw, I don’t blame him for the overloads), Brown,  Sanders (wonder if because of the hammy if he was on a snap count), then Hurts.  Kelce shined at times but looked a bit rusty.  Mailata makes some miscues but then bam.  Loved the play where he was lead blocker on the TD run and was almost like a mammoth fullback.  Not clean OL play yesterday. TEs were hot and cold blocking.

Will be interesting actually. It's Wentz in Detroit.

On the Duffy/Cosell podcast they pointed out that 4 of the 5 longest runs were on likely passing downs.

1 2-11-DET 24 (14:27) D.Swift left tackle to PHI 26 for 50 yards (D.Slay).
4 1-10-DET 20 (12:37) D.Swift up the middle to DET 38 for 18 yards (M.Epps).
3 3-10-DET 25 (9:04) (Shotgun) D.Swift up the middle pushed ob at DET 41 for 16 yards (J.Bradberry).
2 2-10-PHI 42 (4:34) D.Swift left tackle to PHI 29 for 13 yards (M.Epps).
1 2-20-PHI 25 (12:19) (Shotgun) D.Swift up the middle to PHI 14 for 11 yards (M.Epps; A.Maddox).

Those four plays were half of their rushing yardage (90/181).  A reasonable person could understand why we weren't in a 5-man front with Davis on the field on those downs.  It still doesn't absolve the play of the eleven on the field, however.

Fruit cup. That sounds good right now. Would be a good palate cleanser after that Chipotle burrito.
