Couple random observations

Seumalo - I just watched the local NBC post game show and he walked into the locker room on his own.  No boot either.  Guessing he has a sprain and probably a fairly bad one.

Covey - I'm just about done with him.  He's a twig out there and I expect him to get snapped in two and lose the ball on every return.  I can live with that BUT he has to be able to come up and catch the ball.  That's the #1 priority for him.  He hasn't done it yet in four games.  Give me Reno Mahe.

Roster - The really nice thing (credit to the coaching staff and also to Howie) is how everyone on the roster to the last man contributes.  The chemistry on this team is super high right now and there is clearly talent and that combination always bodes well.  Still way early but if we can stay healthy we are going to be in the mix in January.

I disagree.   Yesterday's game was a horrific one to evaluate the punt returner.  He didn't give the ball away... so he didn't hurt you.  But to expect that he'd be taking chances in that wind just seems an unreasonable expectation.    Covey has played the punt returner position at a similar level to Reno Mahe... minus one muff in - again - swirling type winds with a left footed punter.

Covey isn't a great punt returner, but I absolutely believe he is 'solid' back there.  He is a lot better than Greg Lewis! .  And I believe he's also a better option than Reagor was, or even Greg Ward who often times left punts to land and bounce and they'd be downed inside the 5.  Covey hasn't let punts just bounce regularly... outside of yesterday.  But, yesterday was a day for extreme caution catching punts.

Thank goodness defense has bailed out the special teams with a bunch of short fields this year. The return game is brutal, and Siposs has been blech.

Some major differences.
Foles: Living off Chip's scheme that opponents hadn't figured out yet. Once they did, it was over. The same thing happened to Sanchez and Bradford too.
Vick: Was living off deep throws to Maclin and Jackson. He never could figure out the middle of the field, so it was a feast or famine offense. We'd still score because of the playmakers, but it was inconsistent.

Hurts is making a lot of throwing progress, but if he hurts his ankle again then I could see regression. This is true of all mobile QBs (even Mahomes and Allen). It just lowers the ceiling.

Which is why I am pleading for more caution from both him and the coaches on the running.  From him, prudence when facing multiple defenders... running over one is one thing, trying to run over 3 is another.  Though, personally, I'd rather he not try to run over any.  And from the coaches, limit his designed runs to high leverage situations.  That 3rd down at the end of the game was a great time to leverage his running AND throwing and run a bootleg with a run pass option.  Looked like he had a run option only, and rather than just sliding down to avoid the contact and keep the clock moving, he decided to try to plow over 3 guys.  Those 2 yards weren't worth the potential injury.  BUT... by not having a throwing option, the coaches basically put it on him to make the first down... so he went for it.  In that weather, prudence needed to prevail.  Unless you have the corner easy, slide down, keep the clock running and we'll figure it out from there.

Your team is good when the biggest complaints are punter and kick/punt returner. Now that matters (see the 49ers/Packers playoff game), but that is something that can be fixed.

I don't see a solution.  With Covey, I think we are just going to have to take what we get.  Sure handedness with a 5 yard return, before he gets blasted.   At punter... Siposs needs to work on some coffin corner stuff.  Just hitting it high and letting the gunners get under it isn't working at all.  A low line drive out of bounds at the 10 would be better...

Absolutely brutal weather conditions where turnovers were significant in the game. Where our kicker missed a PAT because of it and made our Coach turn down a 40 yarder to ice the game late and you want Covey to sprint up and catch the ball in basically a monsoon?

I think Covey could be decent if maybe we threw a block or two for him. But, f it let’s bring back DeSean.

Did I say it was only yesterday? He hasn’t come up and fielded balls cleanly all year.

We're going to make trades at the deadline. A very easy solution is trading for a WR or CB with PR experience. Ex: The Jets have Berrios as their WR #4/5 and could trade him. Desmond King of the Texans can play multiple ST units and would be a reasonable backup CB in-game too.

Covey somehow leads the league in total returns.

Yesterday was super tough but he hasn’t done it in four games. Yeah, give me a catch. That’s all I’m asking for. Clean catch even on short punts. He hasn’t showed that yet in my mind.

Why would the Jets be willing to trade Berrios?  He was their Philly Special QB yesterday.   I just don't see him as being super available.

King is the Texans' 3rd CB and they have a ton of injuries at CB right now with two guys on IR.   I just don't see him as easily attainable either.  Plus, they just resigned him to a 2 year deal.  I think they like him.

Prying either guy away likely involves overpaying.  If I had to, I guess I'd go with King since he's under contract for next year, but Berrios becomes a free agent after this season, IIRC.  How much do you give up for a PR rental?    I guess that depends on where this team stands in a couple weeks when the trade deadline looms.

Peter King with some nice Philly love this week, including this:

Hidden person of the week

Jason Kelce, center, Philadelphia. Should a 12-year veteran of the trenches really still be road-grading people at age 34, at the highest level of the game? Kelce is. In his 126th straight start, Kelce was the center of a great Eagles offensive line against a strong Jaguar defensive front Sunday. Case in point: 30 seconds left in the half, game tied at 14, Philly ball at the Jax 10-. Handoff to Kenneth Gainwell, and Kelce erased defensive lineman Adam Gotsis at the point of attack, then veered off to shove a Jags linebacker on the next level. Kelce too often is the hidden guy—to everyone other than those who know the game.

We also weren’t stopped backed up on our side of the field much. Sure the touchbacks aren’t the best thing but when you are punting from damn near midfield its going to lead to a lower net.

So in one game the following players weren't able to finish the game due to injuries:

Jordan Mailata- Shoulder

Isaac Seumalo- Ankle

Darius Slay- Forearm

Patrick Johnson- Concussion

Kyron Johnson- Concussion

Football is a physical sport being played by the biggest, strongest and fastest men in the world.  All of the injury precautions in the world (no OTA, no tackling, short TC practice, Guardian Caps) go out the door when the whistle blows on Sunday.  Injuries are going to happen to every team.

The best thing players can do is workout and sculpt their bodies to be in the best shape possible for the season and the best thing a team can do is have a team of doctors and trainers to rehab them the safest and quickest way possible.  Let's hope none of these are serious.

I heard that Mailata, Seumalo and Slay are all day to day.  No update on the Johnsons, I'd assume they are in concussion protocol.

I was critical of the off season plan too. But through the first month of the season, we are one of the healthier teams in the league. It seems in that regard at least, the off season plan was a success.

Welcome to the NFL rookie.

No doubt they are healthy. More or less pointing out that in one game look how many guys can get hurt.

Indeed.   It still bugs me, but... they came through it healthy and sitting as the only.... you know...  left in the league, no argument can really be made that it was a bad plan.  I still would have liked to see the OL work together more (Seumalo flipped to RG, Dickerson is still very green, even Mailata is inexperienced for that matter).  And wanted to see Hurts more in the PS as well, but even that seems to have gone by the wayside as his passing prowess is indeed improved.  I had a different philosophical outlook than the organization, but their method sure seemed to work.  No complaints here.

That said, I am still dead set against the frequency of designed QB runs.  And I'd like to see Hurts avoid contact more than he has... and definitely avoid running over lots.

BUT, there is much to celebrate.  A top scoring offense - 15 total TDs through 4 games... only the Chiefs (16) and Lions (18) have more.  Eagles are the #4 scoring offense in total points (115), behind the Lions (140), Chiefs (129) and Ravens (119).  but part of why the Lions have so many, I believe is that they've been involved in shoot-out type games with their pathetic defense... and are also far and away the team surrendering the most points as well (141).

Meanwhile, the Eagles' Defense is tied for 9th in the league in points allowed (17.8 ppg).  None of the teams ahead of them in offensive scoring is ahead of them in defensive points allowed. Lions are the worst (35), Ravens are 9th worst (25.3), and Chiefs are middle of the pack (24.0).   49ers are a ridiculous 12.3 ppg.  That should go up after tonight's game though.

I am looking forward to the all 22 to see how the interior of the line played. They didn't have their best week against the wft, but that was the best pair of dts we will face. My guess is that they handled the jags pretty easily, which allowed Kelce to get to the linebackers which propelled our running game. The jags also seemed to sell out to stop hurts on read options, which made things easier for us.

One thing's for sure.  Driscoll, for as good as he battled, doesn't have the size to anchor LT.   He showed a lot absorbing the initial blow but sometimes that blow pushed him back 2 yards immediately.

Another thing to note.  TJ Edwards, Marcus Epps and CGJ don't come off the field.  Those are my 1-3 as of now for new contracts.  Bradberry is making it hard to not want him back too.

Would love to see more from the draft picks.  Davis and Calcaterra played 17 and 11 snaps on O and D respectively while Dean and Johnson played 17 and 14 on ST.  None for Jurgens.  I'm OK with Dean and Johnson being core ST for now but I would really like to see more from Davis.  He made his first there he is play but then was on the sideline.  I'm sure his impact is felt not only on the stat sheet but still 17 snaps for the 1st rounder you traded up for...not good.  That was my biggest gripe with Davis.  You're investing multiple draft picks to get a player who even in his prime might not be playing 50% of the snaps.  Not questioning his talent one bit just looking a the investment.

The Texans are drafting 1st overall (likely) and Jets could be out of the playoffs by the deadline.

In 3 weeks, we'll have a better sense of who is a buyer and who is a seller.
