July 30, 20242 yr Phillies did everything I was expecting for them to do at the trade deadline in terms of checking off boxes, with one exception. Platoon partner for LF. check. Closer. check. LHP relief pitcher to deal with LHB. check. And to do that, they had to dump some players off the 25 man roster... Dominguez, Pache and Soto were all expendable pieces. We can be upset about WHO they picked up, but WHAT they picked up was pretty predictable, the exception being CF. Rooker would have been a nice bat to add, but his glove would have been terrible. I am trying to remember back to the studs they acquired for the 2008 run... and I remember Joe Blanton... and Matt Stairs, I think as the moves. Am I missing someone? Neither was a 'needle moving' blockbuster, but both ended up playing a pivotal role for the team leading up to and in the playoff run. Gotta hope that they picked up the right pieces, even if none of them are blue chippers. (Estevez is pretty close, IMHO, though.).

July 30, 20242 yr The fact Nola somehow got 7 years when no other starting pitcher touched 5 this offseason is a feather in the cap to his agent. I’m positive no one else would’ve given him more than 5 years

I wanted arozerena. I’d have done a similar trade. He had multiple years left on his contract. He also after 3 games is hitting .455/.538/1.357

Yamamoto was only one that got that type of deal and he’s 25. he was younger than Nola and less were. I don’t believe anyone was giving 31 year old Aaron Nola 7 years. Frankly i think if he went to the market he likely topped out at 5. Especially off the year he was coming off of

He was hitting close to .300 since June 1st. His start to the season sucked. He’s been red hot since June 1st. He was coming back to the player he’s shown in the past. Austin hays has what he has since last all star break. since June 1st his slashes .296/.406/.528/.935. Some of the best numbers for an OF over that time. Cause he was never as bad as his early season numbers indicated.

But, he's had a declining BA each season... 0.254 last year, 0.265 the year before. I don't think he's going to finish the season with Seattle having anywhere near a 0.300 average. Tie game! Go BOHM!

His slashes since June 1 are some of the best in baseball and the mariners didn’t give up their top tier prospects either. It’s ridiculous to sit here and say they didn’t need him. He’s also playoff proven in the past. His analytics beyond BA say that was a good trade for mariners. he doesn’t have to hit .300. He hits 260-270, can play vs. RHP and lhp and is productive it’s a massive upgrade. Just pointing out he’s hit .296 for 2 months now. So there’s a chance he would hit around where he normally does per season. Which is a good upgrade. Move marsh to CF with platoon with Rojas it’s an upgrade. also they’ve said hays isn’t a platoon.

We knew the Phillies needed to improve their offense from the OF. He could have done that. They ended up with a different playoff experienced former All Star LF. Hays doesn't excite people, but as I said earlier, they made the move for the "what" (aka, a LF), just not the "who" people would have preferred. Hays hasn't done anything here, but Arozerena has done a lot in Seattle... but its been 3 games. At this point, all we can do is sit and watch, because its over. You are on record. Arozerena > Hays. (BTW, I hate analytics.) As fans, we always want the flashy moves, but they aren't always what gets the job done at the end of the day.
